The worst font to pick as the "standard" for essays in my opinion. I think it looks so ugly. :barf:
Plus it has serifs. :mad2: Ugly, ugly font. So many other fonts are available that look professional as well as being stylish.
Do you like Times New Roman?

I'm alright Times New Roman, probably because I'm used to using them in essays and papers and such,lol.
I however am much more partial to Helvetica. :)

Not really.
I don't have a whole lot of fonts installed, but some I like are Calisto, Calibri (it's so cute!), Cochin, Georgia, California, Corbel

It's one of the easiest fonts to read, but it does get boring after awhile :(

Always kinda liked Times New Roman actually. Never had a problem with it.
I use Centaur. I like the way it looks.

Times New Roman is a quality font, in fact. It's extremely legible and to be honest, it doesn't even look too bad. The problem with Times New Roman is overusage. Since it's been the standard font in Microsoft Word and similar for so long, it connotes—to anyone who pays attention to typography, at least—no effort being put towards making the document visually appealing, which is sad—to anyone who pays attention to typography, at least.
I have no real problem with Times New Roman, but I just like other fonts more. Though I'm in the market for a new font so perhaps I'll give the ol' TNR another shot.

I use Verdana for formal letters and emails at work, Arial for short documents like posters or CVs, and Times New Roman for just about everything else.
TNR's a tad unsightly, but it's got a robust, typewriter-esque quality that makes an essay cry "I am pompous and academic! Heed my knowable learnings!"

I just tried out Calibri because I didn't know what it looked like and I rather like it. Usually I'll pick Arial Narrow if I'm writing something for myself (though never for essays) because I quite like it as a font. Otherwise Trebuchet MS, Verdana or Arial are fine for me. I'll use TNR if I'm jotting something down quickly and don't dislike it, but I do agree with what Rantzien said.

I find it to be good for printed documents, or anything on paper. On a screen, I prefer Arial, Verdana, etc.

I hate it when colleges and universities and government things use Comic fucking Sans. Every time I'm given a Comic Sans document, I want to papercut the person who gave it to me to death.

TNR is good for essays and usually i'm too lazy to change fonts if i'm writing something. OTHERWISE I like papyrus.

I see that on small businesses sometimes and it makes me want to weep :( Those poor businesses will fail forever.
I don't especially like Times New Roman, I prefer cleaner fonts.

I must admit I always liked to try and use different fonts. Thankfully most of my teachers weren't sticklers for TNR. As long as it was readable and didn't use significantly more space than TNR you were alright(no cheating page length by using a super size 12 font :p).
A favorite of mine to use online is Palatino Linotype or any font similar to it. Or at least it seems to have codes for it on several of the forums I visit(stupid forums that limit font choices, it isn't like reading Palatino will kill ya!... then again it does keep someone from posting in Comic Sans).
Calibri is also nice, though truthfully I didn't recall seeing it much before. Must have overlooked it in my massive font list.

OMG I HATE it! And unfortunately, I have to use Times New Roman for all of my assignments in my reading class.
But what my teacher doesn't know is that I type in another font (the default on the school computers is Calibri) and then I change the font just before I print it off or send it to her. It's so nauseating!

Same here. But then I decided it looked too childish, like something that would appeal more to a 5 year old. Which says alot because I'm EXTREMELY immature. I can't stand looking at Comic Sans anymore.
But Times New Roman wins when it comes to ugly fonts!

the inner triangle of the A in helvetica is slightly smaller
the e is fancier looking in arial

Tahoma was my web design teacher's favorite. One of my friends told me that's one of 2 fonts that have the lines on the Is and Js only (how most people I know write)
I think, anyway... I could be wrong. Whatever this font is, I like it. I personally can't tell most fonts apart unless it's so obnoxious (Times New Roman, Courier or however it's spelled, Comic Sans, those fonts)

I was taught that serifs (Times New Roman) are good for paper and sans serifs (Arial) are good for the screen. Not sure what the science is behind it, but in my experience that's exactly right.
As this suggests though, Times is really ugly on-screen.
Comic Sans MS, now that *is* the most horrible font ever. Exclusively used by schools and middle aged females trying to advertise things.

Personally I would have used Fixedsys or Courier for everything but thats frowned upon so I go Times New Roman or Arial.

Times New Roman is a very ugly font and I wish it wasn't so standard. :p
I like Lucida Console because it's monospaced and makes my parentheses line up.

I use Verdana for most things and Sylfaen for looking fancy in writing and stuff.
