Woody Harrelson killing zombies. There is no way to consider this less than mandatory viewing. It comes out here next Friday and I will be going to see it next Friday.

Ever since I saw the trailer, I've wanted to see this so bad. I don't think it will be as good as Shaun of the Dead, but it still looks pretty boss.

It blew Shaun of the Dead out of the freaking water. Note that as high praise, because I love that movie.

I was kind of iffy about this movie, but after seeing that Abigail Breslin was in this movie, I just convinced myself that it had to be seen this weekend.

Matinees! The poor peoples movie showings.

EDIT: I just saw it! I do have to say, it was pretty much awesome. I mean hell, the opening credits were amazing!

The twinkee thing was hilarious. And at the end I thought for sure Tallahassee would have died. But damn he's a bamf! Poor bill murry though :(

I was disappointed Abigail didn't get her head blown off in that one scene.

I went to see the midnight showing of this, it was pretty fun. :P Overall, though, I thought it was pretty good, but not great. The main dude/Colombus was a little too Michael Cera for me (although I do like Michael Cera a lot). But that whole section with Bill Murray was just amazing xD

Wouldn't mind seeing it again, but I wasn't blown away like I was wishing!

you are unfortunately a complete moron. and this movie was udder garbage. it is impossible to make my argument clearly over the internet because a true back and forth discussion is needed. so you guys can flame me all you like but (now here is where i become a zombie elitist) unless you grew up with original Romero and Fulci you are just jumping onto this bandwagon that seems to have come up from nowhere. Shaun of the dead is brilliant, this is slapstick trash. sorry just my opinion.

Yeah, god forbid people should watch and enjoy this film without having a thorough grounding in the zombie film genre first. Maybe they should make people take a 6-week course before they're allowed to see it? 'Jumping on the bandwagon'? What does that even mean?!

Yeah it wasn't a "omg this is how zombies behave! Watch this and learn everything about zombies!" movie. It was just a fun movie. You shouldn't be going in to expect anything more than that!

Yeah no bugger off. I'm as much of a zombie purist and elitist as it is possible to be and this still looks like a great movie :monster: And if you were actually such a zombie expert you'd know full well that plenty of zombie humor depends on slapstick by the very nature of zombies.

I won't defend Zombieland against accusations of it being slapstick. I will, however, agree with MILF in that the very idea of zombies tends to lend itself to that kind of humor. For that very reason, I think Zombieland succeeds.

On second thought, it almost seems unfair to call Zombieland a zombie movie. I wouldn't even say it's fair to call it a spoof of the genre in the way that Shaun of the Dead is. Shaun of the Dead is funny primarily because it mocks the conventions of the more dramatic zombie movies. Zombieland exists entirely independently from the zombie genre. It's first and foremost a comedy. One doesn't have to even like zombies to enjoy Zombieland. I can understand how a self-proclaimed "zombie elistist" may dislike the movie on these grounds.

Then again, I'd also argue that anyone who goes in expecting anything but an excessively ridiculous slapstick comedy from a movie which advertises itself with the tag line "Nut Up or Shut Up" is a complete moron. Sorry, just my opinion.

ok well if you want to classify it as purely a comedy film and disregard the zombies for the sake of argument than you are looking at something completely unoriginal and boring. i mean dont get me wrong, slapstick can be very funny at times. but there was almost nothing original and funny. the bill murray deal was funny i think... and other parts of the film made me chuckle but nothing made me just absolutely love the film.

how can you think that Fulci's films are bad? they helped to pioneer the gore porn that we all so love today! yes they are not the best things ever made but they are from the nineteenfreakin70's, you know?

Ouch!
10-08-2009, 10:36 PM
I won't address your more specific points as it ultimately seems to come down to one thing: it just sounds an awful lot like you don't like slapstick comedy. Zombieland was pretty standard in that aspect. It's crass, brutal, and inappropriate humor. Zombies being thrown in just gives the opportunity to laugh at over-the-top gore, blood, and violence. It amused me greatly in the process. If it didn't do so for you, bummer, but I'm going to have to take a wild shot in the dark and say you're in the minority.

Just because it did it first doesn't mean it did it well. Pioneering a genre does not inherently make the movie good. Important, perhaps, but not good.

It's a great feel good movie. Woody Harrelson reminds me why he is a badass. I had forgotten since he hasn't really done movies where he's played a badass since Natural Born Killers. I'm not gonna say it's better than Shaun of the Dead because I think as far as zombedies, they'd both get the same score. Zombieland was more action packed that much is for sure. It had a few scenes that made my heart flutter.

this is true, i am definitely the minority here. it has been very difficult to find someone who agrees with me. oh well... we all have our own opinions. but a question to get all the lovers to think; no one can possibly love every single part of a movie, what changes would you guys have made? no matter how small cause i know most of you will just say stuff like "make it longer" or something not entirely helpful. lets give out helpful criticisms here.

Freya
10-09-2009, 09:02 PM
Nothing. There was nothing I didn't like about the movie.

Ouch!
10-09-2009, 09:33 PM
I didn't love every single part of it, but I can't recall a part where I was particularly disappointed with anything. In fact, I'd argue very much against making it longer simply because then I believe you'd begin to encounter the sort of fluff that would then ruin the movie's pacing. I thought Zombieland was pretty freaking awesome from start to finish. I didn't even mind the whole obligatory infusion of the romantic subplot, although I imagine that would become the largest source of ire if there is one at all.

I enjoyed it muchly. Woody Harrelson was awesome, and Bill Murray's cameo was bizarre but hilarious.

I think, overall, Shaun of the Dead is a better film. I think it's sense of humour is maybe a little more sophisticated, but as films they're difficult to compare. Shaun is essentially a slacker movie, this was more of an action-comedy. The thing that I'd really say Shaun did a lot better was the ending. The adventure park thing was pretty fun, but then it copped out quite badly.

It might be worth noting that there are is a fair amount of humour that British people will appreciate more about Shaun of the Dead and likewise, a fair amount of humour that Americans will appreciate more about Zombieland. I know that having seen Shaun of the Dead upon arriving in the UK, it made me laugh a hell of a lot more than it would have had I never been there. With all of that in mind, it's only natural that the movies will split opinion. Personally I always felt that Shaun of the Dead was more of a situational comedy rather than a zombie comedy.

I haven't seen Zombieland yet, although maybe I will later on!
