Cocoon food grower wins Electrolux Design Contest | DVICE (http://dvice.com/archives/2009/09/cocoon-food-gro.php)

This is pretty crazy. Apparently you put in a pouch of muscle cells and nutrients and the machine uses oxygen and god-knows-what to "grow" meat.

Technically still a vegetable, isn't it? I wonder if a vegetarian would eat it if they only don't eat meat because of animal welfare reasons... I'd like to see what the meat ends up looking like, because it sounds like quorn to me, which is pretty gross to eat.

And wtf I want to know more about the teleporter. :(

I read about that a while ago. Sounds pretty creepy. I'd imagine this kind of technology is what our generation generally will be hesitant to accept when it starts spreading, while the newer generation will think we're stubborn fools who don't understand what's best for us.

I wonder if you could mix chicken and beef cells and they would grow a hybrid piece of meat? Maybe we could have a true Turducken?

I think there was a discussion about something like this in EoEO a couple of years ago.

It's interesting, especially because of the whole "will veggies start eating meat now because of this or not" - like BoB said.

From the way I understand how this thing works, if it gets 'big' I don't think it'll be as controversial as people think it will be.

If I'm right, they'd extract muscles cells from a living animal and grow that, so the animal would still be alive. Well, some people are vegetarians because "KILLING ANEMILS!" I think these are the ones that would most likely conform. Others are vegetarians just because it's meat and it's unhealthy etc. These ones won't conform.

But this is the one and only General Chat, so entertain yourself with this picture as I leave for school. (http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a318/Sagensyg/image1037.jpg)
