You play as this guy dressed in blue... and it begins in a forest-y place? I remember being unable to read at the time I had played it, and would like to revisit...

ps: Mermaids and precious air bubbles? ring bells?

Secret of Mana - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Secret_of_mana)

Was it this? And if not, do you remember what kind of game it was? Side-scroller? RPG? Fighting game?

It definetly was far from Secret of Mana... but had a similar top view.

I'm not quite sure what the genre was, I'm guessing Adventure/RPG.

edit: Yellow sparkling throwable ?stars? for a weapon???

That's a pretty vague description, especially for the SNES era. I keep thinking either Terranigma, Lagoon, or Equinox but my knowledge of these titles is really limited. I also keep thinking about Star Tropics but that's an NES title.

Equinox! ahhh... yet another game I have forgotten....

It's still not quite the one I am looking for, but it even has the same general weapon LOL.

Sounds like Young Merlin to me. Quite a cool game

Throwing yellow stars, check!
Dressed in blue, check!
Starts in forest, check!
Getting life support from mermaids, check!

Don't recall any ringing of bells though.

Act Raiser also checks with everything except bells and mermaids.

I wonder if any of these games are the one I was looking for. Guess I'll have to do some searching.

Okay in this game you aren't really a character but you have to manipulate a group of characters who can be given techniques.

My next suggestion was going to be Soul Blazer (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soul_Blazer), but it sounds like you figured it out.

Huh, I wonder if there's any SNES games that didn't start in a forest. :mog:

There was once this game on the NES that was so similar to the Legend of Zelda, except it was a bit more RPG-ish and the screen scrolled in real time, typically keeping you in the center of the screen. You'd start the game, and then you'd choose your color. I always chose blue, but there were way more than just that. The game then started a bit west of this house. When you went to the house, you'd be able to level up with the EXP you've gotten, and it would also heal you, because it's a house. Going southwest a little ways I eventually found an axe, and I used it to cut the trees around some sort of portal. Going through the portal I found a beach, but walking on the sand made my HP go down! I died.

That's as far as I ever got. The hero looked suspiciously like Sophitia's Extra Costume in Soul Calibur 2.
