How do you count three on your hand[s]?

http://img38.imageshack.us/img38/2032/img0775mn.jpg

THERE ARE SO MANY WAYS TO DO IT! I prefer this way, though. :) Even if I have to put my thumb back when I count all the way to four.

My hand is too rough to be counted. :colbert:

Also, since seeing Inglorious Bastards, I count the german way!

I have a few ways to count to three, or maybe two ways.

If I start counting with my left hand, I go pinky, ring, middle. With my right, I go index, middle, ring.

Ever since I learned sign language I do it like that--index, middle, and thumb.

Thank you.

Al wins the survey just like everything else.

I seem to alternate between starting index to pinky, then thumb, and pinky to index, then thumb.

I hold up both hands with my fingers closed in a fist. I raise my index finger on my left hand followed by the index finger on my right hand. Then I point at something and raise my little finger on my left hand.

Index, middle, ring.

I can't do that on my right hand very well. It puts too much stress on my pinky because I have to hold it down too hard.

Index, middle, thumb. If the ring finger were the third finger, it would conflict with the symbol that's used for six, since you have to hold down the pinky.

You can't start with the thumb, because that would conflict with ten. You could start from pinky, then ring, then middle, but then you have a numbering conflict with nine.

There's other ways to count to ten? Really?

Thumb, index, middle - if I'm going to three. Four and higher is index to pinky, then thumb.

EDIT: My left hand goes thumb to pinky always.

As it is mandatory.
Left: Index to pinky then thumb (seems to be the dominant counting hand)
Right: Thumb to pinky

I just realized how wonderful it would be if I could effectively count in binary on both hands, but I'm not dexterous enough for it :p

I don't understand binary but I'm actually starting to pick this up as "three". Learning to count in Japanese, we were taught to hold out your hand with all your fingers and thumb extended, then, starting with your thumb put them down as you count.

I want to say that's 24.

I haven't required the use of my fingers when counting for quite some time now.
But let me pull out my toes and I'll let you know how long it's been...

I don't need my hands to count to three. I have a brain that can handle these chores

Thumb is number five. That's how I was learned!

NorthernChaosGod

Both on right and left hand, if I'm counting, it goes index, middle, ring, pinky, thumb.

If I just want to denote three on either hand I use middle, ring, pinky, in a backwards Ok sign.

There's 10 types of people in this world. Those who understand binary and those who don't.

Apparently 1pointer, 2middle,3thumb.

Yes.

If I'm counting "1, 2, 3" I go index, middle, ring. If I'm just showing the number "3," then I've started using my middle, ring, and pinky fingers.

I don't need my hands to count to three. I have a brain that can handle these chores

This is actually relevant to me as a soon-to-be highschool basketball official, as for reporting fouls I have to say the number as well as show it with my hand.

For everyone else, maybe they just suck at math.

My thumbs are always last. I can't get to 4 if I start with my thumb because my pinky and my ring finger are lovers. Wherever one goes, the other follows.

Index, middle, ring.
