One is lead to believe to that he, along with the rest of the Returners, got killed during the destruction of the world.

Same. On my very first playthrough about a decade ago, I was very excited to play Leo in that battle versus Kefka and I thought he was gonna join my party afterwards. But I was then disappointed when he suffered his fate :(

The only characters that would make sense by the content of the game are Banon and Leo. The rest were only temporary characters with very little role in the overall storyline; however, Banon and Leo command a presence during various story arcs in the first part of the game.

IDK, I think Cid could very well have been a good character to have in your team. Option 1, he dies, having that dramatic impact on Celes, or option 2, you save him and he comes with you, also having an impact on Celes. As it is, if he lives, he just stays on that island, by himself, doing nothing, and it has 0 influence or meaning on the story. He is better off dieing in terms of story. If he lived and joined your party, and had his own little cut scene in the ending or something it would be nice. As a magitek engineer you could have given him the "summon" command(which is already programmed in), allowing him to summon his esper multiple times a battle, instead of the 1 limited time. That would have been very cool. Or even have him use Magitek armor for the rest of the game, and have the magitek skill set (full one like Terra). You wouldn't even need to worry about a weapon for him then.

I figured that the developers wanted to establish Cid as a non-combatant for storyline purposes.

Several characters that hardly appear in a battle have completely working sprite sheets. Gestahl, Kefka, and Leo can function as a playable character in the party without any issue.

I wonder why they didn't have Cid appear in a battle scene like that? Maybe he is too old to fight? But, you can argue that Gestahl was just as old, yet he had the power of magic...

First time I played I thought Leo and Terra were gonna hook up. I was obsessed with this game on my first time through some 15 years ago. I remember having to go to school, and snuck in some game time only to learn Leo died. I was really eager to get home and find out if he stayed dead. Later in the game, I actually thought Locke would use Phoenix to resurrect a few of the fallen dead in the WOR.

It's about the same feeling as with gilgamesh in ffv. I wanted him to join me... but he sacrificed himself for us... sniff. I made bartz use genji set for his memory. so, gimme the damn ultros!

I'd probably be tempted to go with Leo as it would have been rather nice and fitting for Leo to join the group given how the Empire had clearly morphed beyond recognition for him. Having said that, I thought that his death was one of the better scenes in the entire game.

So I'd probably plump for the Kappa, so I could use the frankly oddball team of Kappa, Umaro, Mog and Gogo.

I think Seigfried is the best candidate for this, seeing how there's next to nothing story-wise keeping him from joining. Make him a lethal joke character?

An alive Esper like Maduin. Or one with some sort of handicap. We needed one more non-human playable.
