View Full Version : BABY NAME CONTEST!

Melissaur
11-08-2009, 03:14 AM
So as you *may* already know I, Melissa Mertens, am having a wonderful baby girl come March 2010! And if you didn't know, well... you know now. Also, as you may have see people posting threads for Display Name suggestions and what not.

I am here to ask you, The EoFF community, for help on deciding a baby girl name. As this is my first baby and I'm a bit out of my element. I would love to hear your guys' suggestions. After about a week I will choose the top 10-20 names that I like and host a contest to see how the name is taken in by a general audience. It'll kind of be like the Screen Name Contest but you guys get to choose the names I use.

As I posted above my last name is Mertens and so the baby will have that last name so keep that in mind. First and middle names are welcome and please be creative and have some fun. ^__^ Thanks for any help you may be to me too.

Darth Vader Mertens would be wonderful, in my honest opinion.

Is this a great idea?! Maybe a chance to pick a middle name; first names are pretty big deals and you do not want to explain to Aerith Yuffie Mertens why you let us condemn her!

Veronica Mertens has a fabulous ring to it.

On that note, Valencia Mertens is fantastic too. I think a V - M combo is awesome. But that's just me, I love names that begin with V. It's an elegent letter.

If you want something simpler, Charlotte is fantastic. One of my favorite names. Kaleigh is nice too, that can be spelt with a C too. Cute little Irish name.

Alice is nice too. Not too common, but not too weird. Emmeline as well.

Please don't use too common of a name! I like my name, Jessica, but it's so common and there's always 800 other girls with it.

Also... I think Dolores is a beautiful name. :( It's a great temptation of a name, but it'd be kind of dick to name a child after a book about a child molestor, I suppose.

EDIT: Come to think of it, Valenica Alice Mertens has the perfect ring to it. But that's just me.

Jiro

It is my personal opinion that, if you were to use the name Sarah, it should be spelt Saira instead.

I'm being objective here, I'm not in any kind of state to be looking at that name subjectively right now. I think it is a less common way to spell a name I have loved forever. That is all.

Is this a great idea?! Maybe a chance to pick a middle name; first names are pretty big deals and you do not want to explain to Aerith Yuffie Mertens why you let us condemn her!

I doubt the contest will end up having the last word, though! xD If Melissaur doesn't 100% agree with the name(s) chosen, I'd say it's still up to her to choose not to use it!

I like names that are uncommon enough to be personal, but not so uncommon as to be odd or a cause for prejudice about its owner. I like Rye's VM combination, it makes for pretty elegant names like she says. MM, like your own name, has a bit of a storybook character to it (like a main character from a Roald Dahl book :jess:).

Amanda, Norah, Veronica, Nicole, Joanna, Vanessa and Melanie are a few names I think goes well with Mertens, but I think I found my flagship: Valerie Mertens! I love the sound of that, it's my main suggestion. :]

Here's what my girls are going to be called, they'd be norwegian though, so there's always that.

annika
andrea
alina
ada
cassandra
elise
ella
emilie
gabrielle (I'm a bit afraid old hags will pronounce the last e and make it a horrible name though)
hanna
jenny
jeanette
julia
kaja
malin
michelle
mina
stella

I also really love the name Laura, but the norwegian pronounciation of it completely butchers the name. Same with Paul and William.

Oh yeah, I don't know if it's the same in Norwegian but in Danish those names are pronounced:

Paul - Powl
William - Vil-yam
Laura - La-U-ra

...or something. But yes, some names just get butchered. The Danish pronounciation of Kristian (my name) is also quite different from the English one, but I guess that's sort of a given. I also like the name Eric as an English name, but as a Danish one it's just not good.

Yeowch, Paul is even uglier in Denmark than in Norway. :D Don't ever come to scandinavia, Psychotic!

For us it'd be like Pævl and Lævra, with great emphasis on the v. William doesn't sound all that bad if you don't speak like a hobo, but a great percentage of norway does, so y'know. Too much emphasis on the L's I tell ya.

"Lily" is not a name. Lillian is a beautiful name. Sophia is also a nice name. Rebeca is what you can name her if you want her to grow up to be a bitch, Veronica is you wish to raise a social leper, and Erica if you want her to grow up fat with an odoriferous belly button.

So I vote Lillian.
