OK I'VE TRIED SEVERAL TIMES AND CAN'T GET THE SKETCH BUG TO WORK EVEN WHEN I TRY SKETCHING GAU THE BUG DOESN'T WORK! AM I DOING SOMETHING WRONG? I HAVE MY SAVE FILES BACKED UP TO MY PS3 SYSTEM SO I'M NOT WORRIED ABOUT LOSING THEM ANY.

It only works on the SNes version.

Yeah, the sketch bug only worked on the SNES version of VI. Believe me, its not worth the effort cause it randomly chooses what items to give you and most of the time I got the "erase all my saves" part of the glitch. :(

It also only worked on first version copies of the SNES cart. You can actually manipulate the sketch bug to get the items you want depending on, of all things, the order of your spells in the magic menu. See this document for more details on the sketch bug:

I remember triggering the sketch bug on accident when I was a kid. Was quite terrifying to have the graphics completely mess up and have the final boss theme start up against a Zone Eater.

If you want to cheat for the ps version your best choice is to use a gameshark

I recall when I was a kid, accidentally discovering this little gem of a bug during a fight with the giant monster on the deserted island to the north east of the continent (maybe someone can help with the name of that mob?). I looked through the bestiary on here but didn't find it.
At the time, I didn't think of this as a bug though, as it gave me an unlimited supply of **every item in the game, so I thought I had found the developers Easter egg or something. There were so many of each item, it didn't show numbers, instead most items just had symbols to represent the amount (like hearts, diamonds & jagged lines etc). I obtained quite a few **really rare items, that I was never able to find naturally playing through the game.
Dunno if using Relm on that particular monster makes any difference, but you might give it a try.

Intangir or Zone Eater maybe? Depending on which world you're in.

You nailed it, it was Intangir. After doing a quick google, it's good to see that my memory served me correct about how difficult this mob was! Even with all my characters levels maxed he was pretty tough.

I've been dying to play with this bug.
I remember having a blast with it, not only because of all the gear I got from it, but also the reaction my friend had when he realized what had happened. He was a fan of the game before me, and had beat it before I did. So when he came by and seen it, he was like "OMG! How did you do that?!" That in itself just brought the fun level up a few notches. :)
Come to think of it, I had played all night the night before he came by to get my characters to the max level. I recall the SNES actually being pretty hot. So when he wanted an explanation, I think at the time I thought it was from the SNES being on for so long. Either that or we thought it was an easter egg of some sort that I had discovered. Of course now we know it as the sketch bug.

The first time it happened to me I ended up with boat loads of Illuminas. Good times. :)

There is another comprehensive guide on the Sketch bug at the Final Fantasy III section of GameFAQs (http://www.gamefaqs.com/console/snes/game/554041.html). I have only used this bug unintentionally with little adverse effects when Intangir was Sketched by Relm in the World of Balance.
