Has anyone ever heard of them or, better yet, listen to their music?

They are really great, in my opinion. They, meaning the guy and his girlfriend. They run all the music by themselves, and it sounds wonderful. They are kind of techno-y, but their music is all so happy sounding, and it makes you want to just dance. I love it.

Anyone who hasn't heard of them should check them out. Click the link for a page to listen to them. :3

They came up on my pandora a while ago. Then I lol'd at fireflies becoming a top song.

I like them :D

Indeed.

I like them good enough. I bought a CD in the hopes of seeing how the music matures and changes, as right now I'm split on the songs. Some are quite good, and others just don't do it for me.

I, surprisingly, don't hate Fireflys.

It's a decent song, though I don't know if i like it enough to ever pay for it. Some simple lyrics, but well written, and decent vocals and music.

I can't decide as to whether I like Owl City or not.
On one hand, Adam Young can come up with some catchy little tunes and the lyrics are kinda thought-provoking.

On the other hand, as catchy as his songs are, they grow repetitive and I think he relies too much on a pattern. You just...shouldn't do that.

Perhaps I do like his work, but just can't bring myself to enjoy it because EVERYONE I know is obsessed with Owl City. That's always a major turn-off for me, sadly enough.

My ten-year-old sister brings up Fireflies on YouTube all the time. It's nice. Haven't heard anything else.

I don't get the hype. Think it's quite awful actually. Cheesy stuff, Postal Service unnatural soundish, it's is just not working for me I guess.

i think it suffers from the same problem as most music nowadays. Decent catchy, but if you actually listen to the lyrics, it's awful. Fireflies is just stupid, and anyone who I've actually made listen to the lyrics and they think about what it means, laughs at the song.

I love Owl City.. Adam Young is just amazing. My favourite song is either The Saltwater Room or Vanilla Twilight. And I like the simplicity of the lyrics, because so many songs are just full of hidden meanings and you have to think about it a lot. But Owl City... The lyrics are the opposite. They're simple, yet beautiful.

Ouch!

He's got a couple good songs here and there, but ultimately they all tend to sound alike so I can't stand listening to Owl City in large quantities. He just sounds like he's trying too hard to be the Postal Service to me.

"Fireflies" is a pretty decent pop song. I like the lyrics.

i thought it was the guy from postal service at first

how many times has postal service been written in this thread

im not saying one (this guy) is better than the other (postal service) or anything but it looks like he reminds a lot of people of postal service

I actually like the lyrics alot. It gives a simple feeling of innocence you can only get if you still got your childhood yet being as old as you are now...and thats something i don't hear everyday in music.

Its also cool that him and his gf are doing the music together, gives me inspiration for things i might do with my bf who does music as well.

Ouch!

Ditto. xD Mind you, I don't really hear of a lot of music, because unless I go and find out about it myself, there's a chance that if my friends tell me about it, I already know it. I think the only exeption for me was We The Kings, where my crush at the time told me about them. :)

Haha, I'm odd about my music. I usually find new music from movies, tv shows, or online music forums. :3

Of course I found out about Owl City from the radio, because Fireflies is still really popular. o:

I've been meaning to listen to "Ocean Eyes" but haven't gotten around to doing so.

I love "Fireflies" though! I turn the volume up really loud and sing along whenever it comes on the radio. :D

Ocean Eyes is easily one of my top five favourite albums. It's just amazing imo. You really do need to listen to it. & my alarm goes off with Fireflies, which makes me happy. :3

Too each their own, though that seems a little overly dramatic over a song/band! :D

They remind me a lot of The Postal Service. I like TPS but not enough to listen to their lovechild.

Edit: In fact, they remind me so much of TPS that I was convinced they were the same band when I heard that Fireflies song on the radio a couple times.

TPS is pretty good and very similar. You should look them up if you're into this guy.

I like him pretty well on his own, but I'm not that into the female vocalist.
His voice is autotuned, which I'm not really big on but it(his voice) sounds ok without the tuning (I guess maybe he's just doing it for electronic effect...?). His lyrics are decent though and the Fireflies video is really nice.
The fact that he does all of it on his own is really admirable.

The singer of postal service is the singer of Death Cab for Cutie. So If you like those guys you'll recognize him.

My brother introduced 'Fireflies' to me. I like it a lot. He also suggested it'd make a good theme song for Tidus; he has a point.

I only checked them out BECAUSE of seeing the title of this thread. I LOVE TPS, so I had to. And . . .

Eh . . .

It sounds like a MUCH more mainstream TPS. Too modern of synth sounds for my taste. I DO enjoy them, don't get me wrong, but . . . the sort of enjoy I feel guilty about afterwards. :P If only there was a LITTLE less production and the synths sounded more 8bit and less dance/house/trance . . . I would be in love.

There's are REALLY awesome band that's just starting out that is similar to TPS and Owl City.

I've sort of changed my mind. I just heard the self-released EP Of June . . . and I love it. I think I like him better with less production.

Oh, and I searched on youtube and found two adorable vids of a cute :ichigo: girl and her cute brother doing chipmunked fancy music videos:

YouTube - Hot Air Balloon by Owl City (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lD7JsHWw3vg)
and
YouTube - Vanilla Twilight by Owl City (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OuUP5fynKTg)

Cuuuuuuuuuuuuuuute!

Oh yes, absolutely. We've already discussed the similarities between TPS and Owl City here. But, yeah, it's like a more mainstream pop version of TPS. Even down to the vocals. It's like he's trying his best to imitate Ben Gibbard or whatever TPS guy's name is.

The hilarious thing is that in the interviews I've read Mr. Owl City totally dismisses any similarity at all. Hahaha. Yeaaaaah . . . surrrrre. If TPS never did what they did, Owl City wouldn't exist as such.

While I think it's totally okay to rip off a band/musician's style (especially if said band will never release new music again) it's a bit absurd to vehemently deny it.

I wouldn't say Owl City ripped off TPS, more like Owl City is a dumbed-down version of TPS.

Really good, I think. It's not usually my kind of music, but they handle it magnificently and basically make an entirely new genre of their own.

Really but they handle it magnificently and basically make an entirely new genre of their own.

No! Nonononono!

If anyone made the genre, it would have been Postal Service. (However, I could debate this "new genre" dates back as far as Devo or earlier.) And then after TPS there have been MANY bands in the same vein BEFORE Owl City. (Rocket Me Nowhere, HeyHiHello! Mixtape Metro, even Frou Frou and Imogen Heap and Guy Sigworth to a degree). If anything, Owl City is just riding on all their coat tails.

My girlfriend sent me that Fireflies song on MSN a week or so ago. It's all right.
