I liked 5 the most because of the job system :D

It really depends! I like just about all of them.

FF1: it is a "classic", but I couldn't ever get into it. A lot of other people say they have, so~ Play it if you want to get the "real final fantasy experience "

FF2: I love this one! But it is haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaard. I'd leave it for later, when you're bored and like to level grind. The mechanics are really interesting, though.

FF3: I haven't played the DS version, and a lot of people say they were disappointed with it. However, I played the NES version and loved it so much. People talk about remaking the later FFs for the nintendo, but there's not really any reason. Anything you'd want is right there in FF3. It's not as hard as the first two, and there are just so many innovations in it!

FF4: I didn't like the SNES version much, but swap on some DS graphics, and I liked it a whole lot better! (and maybe I grew up a lot in the meantime).

FF5: was my first Final Fantasy and one of the closest to my heart. It is relatively low on characterization and plot compared to some of the other offerings, but the world is amazing, the jobs are addictive, and I have spent many many many days' worth of time just grinding.

Hi! I moved this to the General FF section!

My thoughts on the first five ffs:

ff1: hard, I never got really into it
ff2: hard, but I loved the battle system!
ff3: not quite as hard, and i loved how many innovations it brought to the table. I've heard the DS version isn't very good though.
ff4: didn't like the snes version very much, but I adored the DS version!
ff5: I love this so much <3 It's a little low on plot, but the battle system is, well, I've spent days grinding because it's that much fun.

FFIV (1st)- I really liked the DS remake of this version. If you like chibi sprites you will probably enjoy this. This is also very enjoyable to play on any version of any system it has come out on. I would recommend DS #1 choice, emulator #2, SNES #4, GBA #5, PSX #6.

FFV (2nd)- Another extremely good entry to the FF series, I would recommend playing it on an emulator of all the choices you have available to you. (Spend the money you would on the game on a wireless game pad & cable to connect your PC to your TV), assuming having a modded game system isn't an option for you.

FFIII (3rd)- I really liked the DS remake of this version. If you like chibi sprites you will probably enjoy this. If you are not going to play it on the DS I would say it is much more skip-able (moves to probably just above FFII)

FFI (4th)- I really liked this game for the retro feel, despite the fact I wan't into FF until well after it's day. It can't really be compared to modern games, as the combat system and plot are very under-developed. And also be prepared for a MUCH steeper difficulty curve than any other FF you have played. (You will get game overs from random mechanics from time to time). I enjoyed it, and so have many others, but it would be understandable to skip.

FFII (5th)- I wouldn't play this unless you get it with FFI as the PSOne, 'FF Origins'. The leveling system is just too broken for me to take it seriously as a game, I just exploited it to become ridiculously strong and just play through the game too see what happens.

FFV was my favorite out of those games. The job system was great (only surpassed by FFT in the series) and it's easy enough to get into.

FFIV and III are also good, though I've only played about half of FFIII (DS) so far.

FFI is a classic. It can be difficult (depending on the version), but it's not very long. Still worth playing.

FFI: worth playing just to see how it started. Most of fun come from trying out different combinations of character classes at the start and seeing how you fare.

FFII: The first game with specific heroes rather than generic. Interesting leveling system, based on the 'use it or lose it' principle.

FFIII: Never played.

FFIV: This is the first FF I played. One of the best plots in the SNES era, on par with FFVI. Loved the characters, wasn't enamored of the fixed classes.

FFV: Almost the opposite of FFIV: I loved the flexible job system, found the plot silly. As mentioned, FFT perfects this system and still hasn't been surpassed. I heard the most recent version fixes the script issues.

FFVI: I found this my favorite, it balances story and combat almost perfectly. Each character has specific powers and weapons, but everyone can learn the entire spellset through Magicite.

Just download an NES and SNES emulator, and pirate old Final Fantasy ROMs to your Heart's Content. Yar.

For me, my favorite was the Original NES version. I had the Nintendo Power Final Fantasy Strategy Guide too.

Every time I see the old black NES cartridge packaging with the sword and axe on the cover I get severely nostalgic.

FFI is my favorite out of all of them. It was also my first, so go figure. I just have the most fun playing it and have beat it millions of times.

I liked FFV's magic system the best. It's pretty standard this class casts this type of spell once you're so high a level, but it's the first game that really got it perfect. For summons as well.

The combat systems are basically the same except for FFI.

Just for the heck of mentioning it I like FFIII the least out of all of them.

If you're asking about magic & combat system, FFV is the best and the best main series FF with a job system.

You didn't ask about story, but for that one FFIV might have the best scripted, linear storyline out of all the original 2D FF's.

The rest are all good, but it depends on what version you play whether or not you'll like it. From what I can gather - FFI = Playstation One version (Final Fantasy Origins); FFII = Game Boy Advanced Version (Final Fantasy I & II: Dawn of Souls; FFIII = tie between NES and DS version; FFIV = Game Boy Advance version; FFV = Playstation One version, or Game Boy Advance if you don't mind handhelds, or the untenable D-Pad & Analog Stick on the Gamecube (if you have a GBA player for it). I like the PSone version better because of controls and the battle screen is like 30% cut out because of the GBA screen.

Here's another vote for FFV. It's actually my third favourite in the series among the entries I've played after FFVI and FFIX, though for different reasons than those two; it's simply because it has by far the best combat system out of the ones I've played (I'm told Tactics is better, but I suck at it and haven't gotten far enough to evaluate it objectively).

The real power of the job system in FFT is you can mix and match skills to your heart's content. I'm hard pressed to think of a game that gives you more flexibility in character builds.
