Mini-Mafia: The Return. Talk & Discussion Thread

It's been approximately eight months since we lynched an innocent townie. Eight months since the Mafia have been caught. Eight months since a roleclaim has gone drastically wrong. Ah well, who cares about Mafia?

Welcome to what could be either the great revival, or the final nail in the coffin. This is Mini-Mafia: The Return.

I will allow any number of people to sign up, and when the time has come, we will begin the game. No boring roles, but the game will be balanced enough to allow skill to be the major factor in whoever wins, whatever team they are on. No BS about "I quit Mafia forever, it's dead now," I know, we know, and you know you love it.

Rules? Well if you're brand new to this then check out the MafiaWiki (http://www.mafiascum.net/wiki/index.php?title=Main_Page). Alternatively, you can check out the other threads in the general archive, especially if you could do with a refresher of just how fun this game can be.

What is different about Mini-Mafia? We can play with a small group or a large one, I can account for however many people without the game being unbalanced or rushed. We won't have special accounts ... yes they're fun, but in all we can be started so much quicker and do things with less moderation. The last game I hosted (more than a year ago) had simple play but with roles that added an interesting and unpredictable twist to it, as is the aim of a Mini-Mafia set-up.

So let's get started. Tell me in thread if you want to sign up, as obviously there is no anonymous signing in this game.

I was thinking about mafia the other day actually, and figured a return wouldn't work because old hands like Goldenboko and qwerty had gone. And lo and behold, the qwertster's back in town.

This is going to be fun.

The basic premise of the game is you can be for the town or against the town. The main force against the town have a super secret forum they use to talk to each other, and is called the mafia. Each day, everyone playing can discuss who they think might be in the mafia, with the actual mafia trying to pin suspicion on other people. This ends in a lynch by vote. at night there are various roles people can have. The big 3 are kill, inspect and protect. Kill roles kill the target. Protect blocks a kill. Inspect shows the user if the target is good or evil. The mafia also gets a kill each night that they decide on. After night, everyone who has an inspect role gets their results and the people who died at night are dead, then the day continues.

There are lots of variations and other roles as well, like the roleblocker who stops their target from using their night power if they have one, or Bomb who kills whoever killed them if they die. (either last vote or whoever night killed them.)

I kinda miss the lack of accounts. That was always a passtime to enjoy while playing it. Trying to figure out who was playing who. Then you make bets with others and lose your house :| It was always the "Ok figure who del is, who's psy, who's GB, who's DD" that way you know how they will react! Extra fun if you ask me!

This whole "why is a survivor guilty?" thing is semantics. It can be "town" or "not town" if you want to be pedantic about it all. However the hell you want to phrase it is wholly irrelevant, tbh. It's "guilty" or "not town" or whatever because of balancing issues because otherwise the role of Survivor is too easy in and of itself, no matter how many posting restrictions you put on it.

You can say "but that makes it balanced in favour of the mafia" Yes, it does. It's basically just a neutral variant of the Miller, really, and as such the set up is reflective of that.

"I looked it up in the Flash and on the INTERNETS" cool but did you think of oh, I don't know, asking the moderators of the game you were actually playing what a Survivor would come up as? No. No, you did not.

Not every person in the town has to be dead for the Mafia to win. Killing someone cause they're a hindrance so late in the game is not a wise decision!

I don't think it is unfair to ask what a specific role would give you if you investigated it (assuming you are sane). I remember doing that once before in the game where I was Gunsmith.

Freya, miller IS town alligned, it is there for the same reason so the cop has to THINK about their results and make a conclusion based on them. When Psy and myself ran the game you had the miller role, the town won and you won. This is a game of logic and any balanced game has no roles that will break the game or instantly cause a side to win or not. Some roles like the doctor dare town and help the town. Some like vengeful townie are only useful if there is a lynch. Bomb is designed to make nightkills more risky. But the biggest thing you have having a problem with is that the mods can make up any roles they want to. Like the no vote vote for yourself rule. I think it is stupid. Am I complaining that it is in use? No, because I accept the fact that it's in place. It boils down to you were wrong, get over it. Do you see me ranting over laddy breaking a rule about masons? I got over it and moved to the next day. DD is not being a bad game mod, and I have pieced together enough about the setup now to say it looks very balanced for what it is trying to do.

The problem that the town has in this game is half of you are not thinking at all. If you think about another players actions for a few seconds, you can actually find the mafia members. I know I found a few and the mafia is going to win if you don't get your heads out of your egos. I want to win this so shape up. :colbert:

Edit: Given how lazy you can be based on this game, stop whining like babies that you are wrong, start thinking for a change and don't judge the entire setup until the game ends. I don't know the specifics, but I do know that this style of setup is almost impossible to implement without someone to complain the entire time.

And also I need to give many, many thanks to Psy. He's actually awesome and I wouldn't have been able to do anything without him. I know we haven't finished yet but I wanted to put it out that I'm very appreciative and thankful to have his help.

And back to the game, my set-up is not unfair in the slightest. Without revealing anything, you can see by the revealed roles now that you're quite clearly powerful, and it has nothing to do with the Mafia being overpowered because pretty much every incident costing the town is the town's fault. You haven't lost yet, just stop playing like OAPS and get your asses into gear.

While not questioning the balance of the set up, I probably wouldn't have believed Celes either, since I've never heard or read anything about Survivors turning up guilty. I wouldn't have felt the need to ask the hosts to clarify anything, I'd assume she was lying, and I don't feel I have to read up on how they do things on Something Awful to be able to enjoy a game here. I suppose too many variables can be a con with host created roles and variations.

But that's me, I prefer things more basic.

Anyway with this Survivor thing, we're sorry for anyone who got confused by it. I honestly didn't know it'd be a contentious issue, we just assumed that everyone saw Survivor the way we did. It wasn't intended to be a "Heh let's smurf them over :smug:" thing. We all learned: If in doubt, ask, and hosts should not take things for granted. Now let's get back to pretend bickering!

Just so you know, I believe this game has been a good experience and it could have gone either way. Though by the way the players are playing, it does seem the town have a good chance to blow it and have mafia win, which is good for those playing as the mafia. :P
