View Full Version : Disney and Final Destination would like to know what FFIX's "secret" is!

How come Final Fantasy IX gets all this (well deserved) praise for putting in refferences to previous games, and we all love it for the nostalgia it brings, but previously Disney did the same thing in all its films (or most of them) and people complained, even though I always found that cool even as a child.
The Final Destination has fallen to the same fate - it was very cool to see all these deliberate refferences to previous films, but people just use that as a reason to hate the film?! How did FFIX do it?!

Er...because Final Destination and FFIX are very similar how exactly? As for Disney, I don't recall them doing this much, and when they do I certainly don't remember people complaining greatly about it.

Because FFIX doesn't usually get that praise, this is one of few boards that doesn't have people constantly getting on this forum to say "FFIX FTL!1!1!, FFVII FTW!!!"

Most of them were hidden instead of in your face?

I agree with that point too, the references weren't the plot of the game. So it didn't feel like a forum based sprite comic that the creator decided to push on a world that doesn't know the forum the comic is talking about.

Well the Disney ones where pretty hidden really, in that it depended on you seeing what they where refering to to get it; e.g. Someone simply pulls an Elephant's trunk and the Elephant makes a funny noise - that's simple enough. However the same scene happens in an older Disney film, same scene, different Elephant.
The Final Destination has One death that was atleast 90% identical to an ealier one, but that was done deleiberatly (those who have seen the film, pay close attention to what the character says).
The film also contained simularities to previous films, like the basic forumlar of them. I can't really explain without spoiling, and I respect the FD films too much to do that...
The fact that people thought that Disney had run out of ideas and had ripped off their own material (which is a complete non-sequitor, no matter how unoriginal something becomes in your eyes you can't "steal" from yourself...)

Apart from having "Final" in their names and me being a massive fan of both of them...? I dunno really.
For Disney I saw people at IMDB who complaint and their topics where so long, I didn't bother to join in - various Newspapers and Magazines have touched on it, I wouldn't be suprised if Rotten Tomatoes has too, but then they ONLY post negative stuff (hence their name) so I tend to avoid that website.
I can give you examples of the Disney ones if you like.

There is a difference between remaking something and referencing it. Final Destination II, III, ... etc. etc. are more or less the same move the first one was.

Well the FD series is the kind of film that needs to keep the same storyline, but I meant that TFD (Or FD4) actually had things in background and foreground that where DIRECTLY from the previous films.

Final Destination gets hate because horror movie sequels per definiton sucks. Not that I agree with that. ;) and Final Fantasy IX has a lot more going for it than its not so relevant references.

Yeah, except Disney don't suck, unless you're one of the more annoying self-righteous types of anime fan.

Seriously, the latest decent work from Disney was "The Lion King", they have not impressed me since then..:luca:

Disney don't suck pretty much based on the fact that they are the pioneers of animation - which is a damn huge deal.

I dissagree to, mostly because I liked the first FD film the least (even though I loved it) if that makes sense.
I see what you mean about FFIX though.

I haven't seen the 4th one myself, but I definitely enjoyed the second movie more than the first. :]

The 4th one is in DIRECT compettition with the 2nd as my favourite FD film - I absolutly loved it and the 3D really made me feel part of them film - the only real bad thing is that the 4th is only 82 minutes.
