Anyone else seen it?

I've been meaning to see it.

I was really excited about it when it was announced a year or two ago. I really hope it does good, because I'd like to see Disney do more traditional 2D! :D

The animation sucks - as if frames are missing. So clumsy looking.
I can't remember a single song, save for the witch doctor's song.
The villain is a stick person like 90% of all cartoon villains. I'm super bored with the overused flimsy, stretchy villain look.
Nearly every character just regurgitates a stereotype, because good Disney characters are things of the past, I guess.
Tiana is a frog during the whole darn movie.
The pace is SUPERSONIC in speed (the froggies are in love in, like, five minutes).
Frog romance does not float my boat.
Predictable.

Well, in all the princess ones they do, with the exception of maybe Beauty and the Beast. Enchanted did a good job of poking fun at this fact.

I mean, look at The Little Mermaid. They fell in love with each other upon first glance! Then spent the rest of the movie risking their own well being to get together! :D

In Cinderella, Snow White, and Sleeping Beauty, but the princes are also practically faceless and clones of each other in those movies, too. Can't think of others off the top of my head.

Even though - in The Little Mermaid - Eric and Ariel fall in love at first sight, there's still half a movie of them romancing each other (or, actually, Ariel trying to romance Eric and him falling in love with her even though he doesn't want to). Beauty and the Beast is also an exception, like Bromance said. Mulan and Pocahontas are exceptions, too, I think. Even Hercules has a better love story! Maybe. If the frogs were humans instead of frogs when they danced and almost kissed and said mushy stuff, I might feel differently.

Meh, even then they are mostly predictable. I have seen movies that are "better" and most of the time I still figure out what's gonna happen. I mean there are some that will actually surprise me, but they are few and far between.

I thought it was pretty obvious that it was going to be a lot of frog stuff from just the previews alone. Then also the characters when announced, I personally didn't expect her to befriend a croc and such when she was a human.

I have yet to see this movie but I don't think it's so much about the falling in love more of the journey they have to make with each other. I got that from the trailers so if you went in thinking it was going to be another movie where they fall in love and that's the entire plot then you pretty much weren't paying attention to the trailers.

I'm planning on seeing this soon so I'll get back to you with how it turned out for me.

Yeah, in Pocahontas and Hercules it takes about half the movie to happen. In Mulan it takes all the way until the end of the movie to happen! :D
Also, within the time frame of those movies, the romancin' takes place throughout the span of days or weeks. In TPatF, the froggies are ready to spend the rest of their lives together the same night they meet.

In exactly what world does a Disney animated movie prove to be anything except predictable? Pixar - because they are skilled people who make good films - do not. Disney - because they are riding on the coattails of past glories they cannot hope to reclaim - do.

I'll agree that the songs didn't pop so much but that's cause it's randy newman and I just am not of fan of his. I did like the firefly song and the well the Voodoo Mans song.

I liked this one because yeah it was about love but love wasn't the main goal of the princess, she wanted to fulfill her dream. It wasn't until later that she found love. As I said before, it was the journey that made them fall in love not that they wanted to fall in love like so many other disney movies.

I liked the voodooman he was my fav. I liked that the sidekick of the Voodooman was his shadow, that was pretty neat.

Over all I enjoyed it a lot. It was a good movie. I think it works with the whole disney musical 2D thing and it's setting the way for a new generation of them if they decide to make more. Just take out randy newman xP The story was cute, the songs weren't the best but I usually only like 2 songs per disney film anyway. Of course with a few exceptions.

I thought this movie was wonderfully charming and just fun to watch from start to finish. Part of your appreciation may be based on how much you enjoy the whole New Orleans cajun culture, but I think overall there's stuff there for everyone. The plot and characters were strong but I do have to agree that not all of the songs really hit it out of the park, though a few did. It was overall a lot of fun and I feel a return to form.

That's just how <a href="http://images.google.com/images?q=baron%20samedi&oe=utf-8&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&hl=en&tab=wi">Bawon</a> is supposed to look. <a href="http://www.snowy-day.net/pictures/things/samedi.jpg">Look!</a>. Don't blame them because they finally used it to the right purpose this time.

The thing that bothered me the most about Tiana being a frog the whole time was how lame Disney's lady frogs look xD

I wish they would've been a little more exotic with their Cajun name-dropping, but I guess it would've gone over everyone's heads who doesn't dig that sort of thing, so xD

Also, I looooooooooooooooooooooooooved the... Henri Matisse? style of the restuarant dreaming scene. So gorgeous :D

Also, I could eat Charlotte right up. ahahahahah

1. The animation looked great to me. Not sure what you mean by frames missing because I saw no problems with it.
2. I can't remember a single song from any Disney movie I saw only once, and many of them I haven't seen in years I can only recall a line or two of. I remember about as much as I'd expect to remember hearing the songs once each, but they were all great if you ask me. I love big band jazz stuff like that.
3. I agree with Rubah, that's how the Shadow Man should look given the inspiration for his design.
4. There's a difference between regurgitating stereotypes and just having accents that are indicative of the region and the period. Some of the supporting cast were a bit stereotypical but none of the main cast came off as obvious stereotypes to me. Ray maybe, but he was also the most entertaining character in the whole movie so I can live with it. In other words, it's pretty par for the course in a Disney movie.
5. If you didn't see that coming from the previews then it's your own fault for being so oblivious. I liked it that way since it was a nice twist on the original story.
6. The pace is fast just like any Disney movie, but they didn't fall in love in five minutes. It took half the movie for the Prince to realize he had feelings for Tiana and a lot longer before she realized she was in love too.
7. Personal taste comes into play there. I fail to see how frog romance is inherently any worse than dogs, cats, or any other anthropmorphized animals they've had in previous movies.
8. Complaining that a Disney movie is predictable is like going to a beach and complaining that you got sand in your shoes. You know you're going to get sand in your shoes before you ever get to the beach, just like we all know the prince and princess will fall in love and live happily ever after.

I saw the movie last night and loved it. It was fun and funny throughout with some great animation and music. Everything I could have asked for from a 2D Disney film.

I saw the movie last night and loved it. It was fun and funny throughout with some great animation and music. Everything I could have asked for from a 2D Disney film.

I feared, long ago, that Tiana would be a frog for the duration of her own princess movie. <a href="http://forums.eyesonff.com/2726749-post3.html" target="_blank">I said it in a previous thread</a>, because, yeah, that's the impression the trailers gave me. Still, that doesn't mean I have to like it! You're the second person who's said that I "didn't pay attention to the trailers" like it means something. Also, my favorite Disney love stories are those of The Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast. I'm not into lion love, cat love, or doggie love. It's cute, but humanxhuman or semi-humanxhuman is much more enjoyable.

Also, I'm not talking about the accents, and I'm not talking about Tiana or Naveen (I actually really like Naveen). The hillbillies in the swamp made me gag. So did the blonde girl and her daddy. So did the old lady.

And of course I knew that the prince and "princess" would fall in love! That's what I wanted! That's the Disney thing! As is the main girl's dream coming true. Still, I don't think I'd call any Disney movie as predictable as this one - except maybe The Emperor's New Groove. In fact, TPatF and TENG are very similar.

By the way, these are just my opinions, guys, and I'm not trying to make you agree with them.

Slothy
12-22-2009, 11:26 PM
By no means am I saying you have to agree with me. I was just stating my feelings in response to your original points. But I will say that it seemed you were complaining about Tiana being a frog for most of the movie as if you didn't see it coming. If you did, fine; you don't have to like it anyway.

And let's be totally honest here, this movie was no more predictable than any Disney movie ever. I didn't know exactly what would happen in any of them including this one the first time, but none of them exactly floored me with any shocking plot twists. If anything, this one surprised me a little more than some of the others when Ray died. I'm used to seeing the villain bite it in the end, but there aren't many films where one of the good guys, let alone one of the more likable characters in the film eats it.

Also, as far as the hillbillies and the friend and her father being stereotypes; yes they are. They're also a small portion of the entire cast and quite funny as well. And let's face it, people like that not only existed during the time period the movie is set in, but still exist to certain extents today. And I fail to see why you think including some stereotypical characters who get little to no development in some way indicates the movie doesn't have good characters. The main cast were all great and developed quite well.

the hillbillies cracked me up too. I've known some people who pretty much talked just like Two-Fingers, although slightly less gesturing.

I think my favorite song after Dr. Facilier's is Ma Belle Evangeline

Also, this time, I stayed to watch the ending credits. <333 the wax-resist art :] So cute

I didn't care for how disney reused a lot of the character designs, such as the alligator, the halfwit son, etc.
Tiana always going on about work. Okay, let's do a little smoother job on characterizing her
Maybe they should reconsider how they draw their female frogs. It seemed.. strange? But I did love when she'd just randomly hop off screen xD
"Mardi Gras! Mardi Gras! Mardi Gras!!!!!!!! YES LET'S RANDOMLY SHOUT OUT THE NAME OF THIS HOLIDAY"
And it took entirely too long before they named a cajun dish that wasn't gumbo. Did I say that before? I forget. Anyways!

I thought the animation and parallax were beautiful, although some scenes were entirely carried away with ill-fitting rotational effects and CG.

I appreciated the unspoken commentary of Charlotte embodying the insufferable young girl obsessed with Princess merchandising and imagery, whereas the more sensible heroine didn't go in for that tripe.

I was very pleased when I first heard John Goodman's character. His voice just boomed in suddenly, as if to say, "Hi, I'm John Goodman! I'm going to be in this movie." And I thought, "<i>Yes. Okay, John Goodman</i>."

Ray's character arc was almost physically painful to see conclude, just because it was treated with more dramatic weight than any other event in the film, while being simple to see coming about a half-hour away.

The Evangeline song was the best in the film, and one of the few Disney songs I think might work just as well outside its narrative context.

Dr. Facilier has immediately become my favorite Disney villain ever. He is a joy to watch move, talk, scheme, sing, stare daggers into the eyes of lesser men, and cast fluorescent voodoo lights on all that surrounds him. He completely makes the film, and its main and most obvious failing is that it doesn't have at least fifteen less minutes spent on slapstick and gumbo in the bayou and at least fifteen more minutes of Shadow Man.

The main reason I want to see this is because of the animation.

After so many years, Disney have finally gone back to their roots to do beautiful hand-drawn animation. I was hoping they'd reach their peak of animation genius, talent and skill in this as they did in 'Lady and the Tramp'.

I did not think I would like this movie much for the following reasons:
1) New Orleans is stupid.
2) I have "issues" with frogs.
3) I was disappointed the film was set in 20th century America, rather than a long time ago in a kingdom far away.
3) I only watched the teaser trailer, which did not endear me to Tiana.
4) http://bossip.files.wordpress.com/2009/03/princess-tiana-and-paa4781.jpg is hideous.

I LOVED IT.

The animation was beautiful and Tiana was adorable, not annoying at all, and I think they pulled off the "princess" thing very well. The prince was actually entertaining. And Tiana had a human friend, who was awful and fabulous at the same time. I :<3:'d her.

I liked the songs just fine. I think the problem is that the main songs were a bit too preachy. The whole "work hard" song was cute, but I miss pointless gooey :bou::bou::bou::bou: like "Part of Your World." Then again, "Reflection" was really good. Maybe it just needed more oomph.

Oh, and when I saw Lottie's room I shat. We were the only people in the theater so I squealed pretty damn loud. I want that whole house and I want it now.

Summary: It's not one of my favorites, mostly due to the setting and the frogs, but I did like it a lot.

I just watched it.

It was enjoyable. But nothing great. The whole time I kept wondering if I'm just too old to be swept up in animated Disney films anymore. And then I'd remember last year's UP where the love story was all of 10 minutes and it left me weeping and wanting to hold on tight to the people I love and never let them go. If Pixar can create compelling and moving stories, Disney should be able to as well.

There should be a whole movie dedicated to Charlotte, she was amaaazing. Loved every single bit of screen time she had. Loved Ray too. I thought his romance with Evangeline was so sweet, I've always loved stories like that for some reason. Unoriginal for sure, but I was glad he got his happy ending. It was definitely predictable and I felt like they were trying a little too hard to go back to classic Disney stuff instead of being innovative and pushing forward with their animated films. But I wasn't expecting it to be great so it's not like I was disappointed. I bet little kids would still love the movie.

Same here. Up was just like... oh my god. When Hux and I went to see it in the theatre, it was just us and two or three small families with children. We were crying the hardest of all, and I think the parents were crying too. I think UP was a bit lost on the children - it's definitely a movie for adults who like animation, in my opinion. Hux was reading that over my shoulder and said that UP is a movie for adults who like anything.

I enjoyed..However I don't think its total memorable story since the 'Disney's Renaissance' of animation films.... I wish they could make something like that again..

I finally got around to seeing it today. I very much enjoyed it. Yeah, I agree that it didn't have that same magic that the early 90s Disney movies did, but it was still wonderful. I really liked Dr. Facilier's song and Mama Odie's song, while the rest were good but not particularly memorable.

I will say, however, that The Princess and the Frog is worlds better than any of Disney's non-Pixar CGI films, and heck, better than any Disney animated canon film since...Lilo & Stitch probably. I waited years for another 2D Disney musical, and while this was by no means the epic film I hoped for, I was very satisfied. I hope Disney makes more 2D musicals.
