You must be a brisketcase if you forgot that it's Hannukah, you bunch of latkes!

Happy Hannukah!

Alternatively, what is your favorite thing about Hannukah? I really really really like Hebrew music, the traditional Hannukah music is much better than traditional Christmas music, especially since I think Hebrew is just about the prettiest language ever. I think that's my favorite part - Oh Chanukah is one of my favorite songs. When I was in High School, since about half of the kids at my school were Jewish, they'd bring in some soofganiot too, really yummy donut treats.

Can someone explain haunakah to me? I know the story about the candle oil that lasted 7 days when it wasnt supposed to, but I dont celebrate when my car runs 10 extra kilometers even though the fuel gauge says empty or when my torch batteries begin dying but i can bring them back to life with a good whack :|

I dont doubt its acceptable as a holiday but i feel its only so big because its at the same time as christmas and big business needed to cash in on as many demographics as possible in the discount season.

I think if it werent set around the same time as christmas it would be more like the guy fawkes day in america, some would celebrate it others wouldnt even notice what day it was.

Hanukkah is a celebration of the re-dedication of Jerusalem's Holy Temple during the Jewish rebel's revolt at the turn of 2nd Century BC. The Menorah is just a symbolic part of it. :D

Not really a hunnukah song exactly but really pretty (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-gLQSZPuzII&feature=related)

Really traditional song. The cantor at the synagoge sings a really nice version of this one. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-FbooXzSiQk&feature=related)

Maoz Tzur, another traditional Hannukah song (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZlyGMGc8vtw&feature=related)

Hannukah is the remembrance of a war fought against the Assyrians who tried to ban Judaism, and a very small band of fighters known as the Maccabees (meaning hammer), lead first by Mattathais and then by his son Judah when he died. After the war was fought the second temple was a complete mess, and the eternal flame, a seven branched Hannukot, was put out. (It is supposed to always be lit) and despite an extensive search, only one days worth of oil was found, and supposidly it lasted eight days and nights. Thats the cover story, but there are others, like there was eight spears upright in front of where the eternal flame was and other things. The important meaning is rededication, what the word Hannukah actually means.

Traditional Hannukah foods are always cooked in oil, the most common are Latkes and Sufganyot. You can eat Latkes with all sorts of stuff, applesauce, Sour Cream, Sugar, Ketchup, and more Latkes! My Mom makes them and they taste really good.

It is also the least important Holiday in the Jewish year, but Latkes are yummy. It is not even in the Jewish Bible because it takes place after the book was closed. So the only bible that has the story is the Roman Catholic Bible oddly enough. so everyone should celebrate Hannukah too!

You gentiles are adorable.

Yeah, like qwertysaur said, Hanukkah is a very unimportant holiday that has been pushed up in importance (in the goyim world) because the media tried to be really, really nice to Jews and give them Christmas, too. No real complaints.

Secular humanists love to hate on Hanukkah because they see it as evil religion trampling over civilizations (i.e. devout Jews winning a battle against Assyrians), but they're just looking at it in a slanted way. Enjoy a story about integrity and valor, get into the fact that God might have helped if you want something more religious, and eat something fried amid candle lighting. Charity is usually brought to more importance too, for whatever reason.

NGHS for all.

That's not religious, it's national, and in any event I'd like to know in which world getting drunk does not make sense.

getting drunk is not the reason st patrick's day is a holiday. it's just that holidays are always a good excuse to get drunk, bars need a way to boost revenue in March, and mocking the Irish is more socially acceptable than mocking other minority groups. If Hi C marketed Martin Luther King Day like Guinness does St Patrick's Day, people would be up in arms about racism.
