Mmmmmmmm. I'm eating some right now. I have vegemite on mine. What do you have on your crumpets?

If you live in Norway I guess you can ignore this thread as I know you don't have them. :( *pats Lev*

Honey and/or butter. Better yet, HONEY BUTTER.

English Muffins are different. Even have a different wikipedia article. xD

EDIT: Having said that, you'd probably have the same kind of things on them. :)

Crumpets are soft and spongy. soooo, yummy!

Usually eaten toasted or grilled. The most common accompaniment is probably butter, because you put it on the top when the crumpet is hot and it melts into all the little holes. ahhhh.

I don't think Daniel's picture does the crumpet justice. :colbert:

What the hell is a crumpet, anyway? They're warm and gooey and sort of a hybrid between a pancake and toast! A lovely winter treat. :)

The picture BoB posted looks terrible though. Here:

Pay attention to the way the butter is melting in  I wouldn't normally put that much on but I think this picture explains how they work perfectly!

Ah good one. I got crappy results. That one is way better.

EDIT: I would say that spongey is definitely the best word to describe them, now that I think about it. Extremely spongey.

...what? Crumpets are spongey. I should know. I've had four today and have eight more on my kitchen bench. =] Maybe you guys have your English muffins all screwy.

Crumpet - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crumpet)
Muffin (English) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/English_Muffin)

To quote from the crumpets discussion page...

Look at the Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall recipe page I just added to the external links on the crumpet page. He has recipes for crumpets and for muffins (what Americans call English muffins, but what are just muffins - the original muffins - here in the UK). To generalise, crumpets have a rather chewy texture while muffins are more doughy and bread-like. They are not sweet and cake-like like American muffins.

The main difference between English muffins and crumpets is that the former is an unassuming import beloved by honest, hard-working colonists, whereas the latter is an alienating symbol of bourgeois Britannical glut.

Dude, this is an English muffin:

Looks pretty darn close to the crumpet photo Psycho posted! Also, this thread inspired me to make my own honey butter. Recipe (http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/alton-brown/honey-butter-recipe/index.html) if anyone else is interested.

I don't even know what the hell an English muffin is if not a crumpet, because I refer to the same thing that Americans do when I use the word "muffin".

Raistlin

"Spongey?" Wtf? What kind of word is that if you're trying to favorably describe a food?

And I agree that English muffins seem to be basically the same thing, except less pompous.

So Brits are more pompous in their bread snack thingy that goes with afternoon teatime. You learn new things all the time :p

An english muffin and a crumpet are totally different wtf look at the picture! A crumpet is springy and when you toast it you have a nice crispy topping and a spongy middle, I put Raspberry jam and butter on mine.

For what it's worth, in NZ, we had both crumpets and "English muffins". The former are what has been pictured everywhere, the latter were, as shown by the lovely smitten above, basically what you get when you order Egg McMuffins.

I love crumpets and muffins.

Those of you who haven't had one of each are missing out. :jess:

There's nothing like melting butter over crumpets and slathering them with golden syrup.

And English muffins are totally different to crumpets! I'd call crumpets gooey and spongy, toasted muffins are closer to toasted bread. :p

Well, I love English muffins (which are clearly the same thing, stfu), so... just butter, or maybe some strawberry preserves. Good stuff.

If anything, English muffins are very dry and I think crumpets are slimy!

Basically what we've got here is a classic case of freedom fries. Americans name anything they like whatever they like for no apparent reason.

Don't forget Preserves!

The way I see it, English Muffins are generally savoury and Crumpets are always sweet.

Mind you I don't really like Crumpets, I'm more of a Pikelet person :D

Loony BoB

A small pancake (the American style, not a crepe). About the diameter of a crumpet, actually...

I use to make homemade crumpets and I'd add butter and grape or strawberry jelly/jam to them. It was yummy! Oh, Thomas' English Muffins are basically the same thing and they taste pretty good toasted.
