Question, who was he, why was he important, and was the fake the guy you ran into on the train, vs. the real one who was at the Colosseum?

Siegfried makes his first appearance on the Phantom Train, where he disrupts Sabin, Shadow, and Cyan, who are working their way towards the front of the train. Siegfried picks a fight with them when they try to open a treasure chest. He is very weak, and is easily defeated. However, he manages to escape with the treasure anyway.

Siegfried later appears in South Figaro Cave in the World of Ruin, where he blazes a path for Celes and Sabin to head to Figaro Castle. Unfortunately for Celes and Sabin, he steals most of the treasure. His final appearance is in the Dragon's Neck Coliseum, where he remains for the rest of the game. He reveals that there was someone trying to disguise themselves as him. This is not further elaborated on. Betting a Megalixir will allow players to fight him, and he is much stronger than before, and his difficulty is only compounded on it being a one on one battle in which the party member is not controllable, since it takes place in the Coliseum. The vast difference in strength between the Siegfried found inside of the Coliseum and the one found elsewhere lead some to believe that the true Siegfried is the one found in the Coliseum and all other sightings of him are actually sightings of the fake Siegfried.

In the SNES version, during the instances where he is helpful he appears as "Sigfried," and when he hinders you he is called "Ziegfried." This implies that these are two separate characters and explains Siegfried's comment about being impersonated; this distinction has inexplicably disappeared in the GBA version, however.

Also if you look closely at his battle sprite you'll notice he wields a pistol

Siegfried is one of those characters in ff6 who seem important but simply isnt, a troll character of sorts

Ultros mentions him at some point aswell, but his reasons for doing so isn't explained - nor is it really clear if the are on the same side or not.

It was Kefka, in the library, he murdered the real Siegfried and replaced him with a fraud, which only Ultros knew about... However, Kefka's plan was ruined but Siegfried himself replaced himself with the fake, so Kefka actually killed the fake, foiling the entire plan. The reason for the jump in time, was because Ultimecia opened up a portal through time. The only reason she was able to do this was because X-Death closed THE VOID, but not before expelling everything that was sucked in. Aeris' soul escaped the void, allowing for her resurrection, which is what allowed Ulti to open her portal up in time because she ended up possessing Aeris. Aeris then became a whore selling her flower to any passerby for a measly gil.

http://www.videogamesprites.net/FinalFantasy5/Bosses/Gilgamesh1.gifSpeculation exists that Siegfried was originally designed to be FFVI's equivalent of Gilgamesh, before that role was ultimately usurped by Orthros. You can see that both of them are outfitted like walking arsenals and have their faces obscured by their clothing.

That sounds pretty probable - I can see that Siegfired would have worked as a Gilgamesh like character.

I also wonder if Square concidered having him as a recuring enemy aswell as Ultros, except more as a "joke" concept seeing as his attacks don't really damage you that much - and then they didn't as it would have been overkill to have two characters constantly attacking you? Just a thought...

I always felt he was originally designed for more, but they basically cut his part from the story.

What an acute observation! I never noticed how much detail was put into this sprite. Like TehIrishViking, I assume that he originally had a bigger role in the game that was cut due to time restraints or something. Maybe a potential remake would elaborate on this character a little more?
