So, I like Portishead, how about you?

Can anyone recommend any bands/artists that have a similar sound?

smurf I LOVE THEM. Not a major fan of their newest CD, though. Their first is my favorite.

I actually can't think of any bands off hand that sound exactly like them, but they've always reminded me of Akira Yamaoka's work for Silent Hill (why, I don't know).

For some reason my mind is telling you to check out Cocorosie, Sia, Garbage, and Blonde Redhead. None of these bands sound like Portishead in particular, but they all sort of remind me of one another for some reason or another. Check out Chad VanGaalen, too.

edit: Zero 7 comes to mind, too.

Portishead are fantastic, to come back after 11 years like they did with Third last year and have it be so great was an achievement in itself. Third might be my favourite record of theirs.

As for bands who sound like them, I honestly can't think of any, though the closest I can suggest are the albums Blue Lines and Mezzanine by Massive Attack.

I love Portishead, their sound is really unique. As for recommendations, Massive Attack is what came to mind for me as well although I wouldn't say they sound very much alike when it comes down to it.

I love Portishead so much. Third was different and not as easy, but I still enjoyed it. Like Rantzien, I thought of Massive Attack. They're not really so very similar but whenever I'm in a Portishead mood, I'm usually in a Massive Attack mood.

Bjork has some similar qualities to Portishead as well. Especially the album Vespertine.

This is the best description of Portishead's sound that I've ever heard.

I think their self-titled is my favorite. Every band that I would have suggested most people listed them already, so go for those.

I think the live portishead album sucks because Beth Gibbons is really off key. her poor sense of pitch is less obvious on the electronic albums (and possibly fixed in studio).

The live album is terrific!

uhh.. it's so bizarre seeing this thread since I live in a small town of england called Portishead which is where the band got it's name from, very odd to read!

but yeah, I liked their stuff, especially since it's close to the whole Trip-hop genre which I adore.
