I was looking at SO4, and I had some questions about the combat. All the reviews I've read place the combat in the game as a high point, but from what I've seen it looks a lot like SO3.

My big beef with SO3 (or just about any other game that uses computer controlled characters) is that you control one, but the others are terrible at avoiding getting owned, and I spend most of the game babysitting the computer because it can't play competently. I had this problem CONSTANTLY in SO3, so if the AI works in the same way could someone please let me know so I can write it off.

That would be a shame, as I really like the art style of the SO series, but I have never been able to get into any of the games. (cliche anime style I know, but I like the look of it rendered.)

of the combat and it didn't seem from those the guy playing the game had any problems.

I have yet to play the game.Supposedly it's scheduled to be released for the PS3 in February:

It's been a while since I played 3, but AI in 4 isn't too dependent on the player to survive.

I just started playing, and so far my only gripe is one of the characters using symbology too much because I'm too lazy to change his tactics! They take good care of themselves, and the enemies tend to focus on you for the most part.

Speaking of the International edition, the boxart is pretty lame :p.

It's more competent than SO3's AI, but you'll still have to micromanage sometimes if you don't want to waste a ton of recovery items.

Some characters definitely have some AI issues. At least in SO3, you could "level up" the AI and put them on "Attack with Full Force!" so you'd know they'll attack. In SO4, some characters just act dumb no matter what setting you put them on. Symbologists hardly ever chain combo their spells, Lymle hardly ever uses her Hound skills, Myuria always wants to run up and melee even on "Stay Away from the Enemy", Bacchus never spams his skills effectively, and healers never use healing spells if your HP isn't already below the percent that they heal.

Lke SO3, it's nothing some skill disabling or quick manual control can't fix. But I still hope they fix it for International edition.

There is a fan-translation of SO1 for SNES, and I think they remade it for PSP along with SO2.

My biggest issue AI wise was Meracle. She always got herself killed. So I said fuck it and just controlled her all the time, at which point that game became my unquestioning bitch. :p

You can still play the first Star Ocean using an old translation from DeJap Translations.

Originally, only a game called Star Ocean 2: The Second Story was released outside of Japan, so DeJap Translations dealt with the highly advanced ROM for the original Star Ocean and provided a translation for it. For many years, this was the only way to play the first game in the series until Square Enix released an enhanced remake of Star Ocean and gave it the new title Star Ocean: First Departure.
