For those that may be interested in the following:

Final Fantasy XIII: Xbox 360 version is not HD, 576p – confirmed

While a top notch side-by-side comparison of the PS3 and 360 versions of Final Fantasy XIII has yet to be published by any of the major gaming sites, we have the strongest indication (through analysis), that the PS3 version remains the superior of the two.

A user known as MazingerDUDE, who performs tasks for well respected analysis website Digital Foundry, has revealed that through a study of recent Xbox 360 and PS3 screenshots, that the 360 version actually runs at 576p, which is not HD resolution.

Furthermore, he has also provided a hi-res screenshot of the same image, for both versions of the game – just look at the differences for yourself.

If you still didn’t know what version you wanted to pick up in March, you might do after hearing about this.

As always, give us your feedback on this.

There are 3 pics on the site, and if true, pretty noticeable differences.

Wow, the pixelation of the end of her hair strands is very noticeable.

The comments on that article are hilarious.

I honestly, aside of the vastly inferior lighting on the 360 shot, can't see the differences because the images are too small...I thought they were thumbnails at first but I didn't find a way to make them bigger.

I doubt the actual gameplay will look significantly different between the two.

Woah. 360 girl's hair looks terrible.

They'll probably look about the same on an SD display (which is what I'll be playing with) but the 360 version looks like it's going to be less pretty on an HD output.

Eh. I already pre-ordered the PS3 version. :)

Comments on most articles are funny, but these are exceptional. :P

Do you guys think this will have a significant impact upon sales? I wonder if it'll change any teetering people's minds.

Doubt it. Most people own one console or the other and will buy it for whichever they have.

Plus there's a nifty FFXIII 360 bundle much like Japan's PS3 bundle. I wouldn't buy it but there are people who will.

I have HDTV and an Xbox 360. Eff you Square! And since when does 576p play on a television. Hint: it doesn't. My tv plays interlaced footage.

I bet you anything you won't be able to notice either way when you have it. Seriously, these console superiority-inferiority topics are hilarious.

Let me know when you play the game zoomed in 2x.

I saw the photos on digital foundry earlier and didn't notice any real difference. On any given day I would just as easily say the 360 version looks better. But blown up bigger you can notice it.

However, I'd be willing to bet this is one of those games that looks better on an SDTV anyway so I'm sure for a lot of people it won't be any loss. If anything, there might be certain things not in the frame that are in the frame on PS3 version like how Batman: Arkham Asylum was in PS3 over 360.

other than that:

Seriously, you fan boys need to rounded up Gestapo style...

To some maybe, but to me, and others like me, yes. I am a video editor, and I notice even the slightest flaws in visual quality.

Aside from the translucent weird lines in the hair, it just looks like they need to crank up the contrast a bit

I bet it looks better in motion. I wouldn't be surprised if the hair problem was due to the screen being taken in the middle of a flutter animation. Stills rarely do justice *shrug* Wouldn't matter much to me anyway. I've enjoyed first generation 360 games which are considered ugly now. I've enjoyed original XBox games, which are ugly now. And I've enjoyed all the classic consoles. Which are ugly now :} Ugly pretty games are for me

True, still shots rarely represent what things actually look like in motion. You won't see 90% of the visual errors in video when the video is in motion.

I don't care because I'll be playing the XBox version on a tiny 10 year old tv screen with a radial-to-av cord adapter thing.

The hair looks bad because they use cheap dithering transparency instead of real alpha transparency. Upscaling makes that stuff look horrible. Apparently, the reason they used dithering on the transparency is because the PS3 is pretty sux at alpha transparency layers so they did it to save some resources.

Fun thing is that the 360 is supposedly better at doing alpha transparency, so if they had bothered porting it better, they could have replaced the dithered transparency with real transparency, which wouldn't have looked so poor when upscaled.

And the lower res is pretty bad news for people with 1080p displays, cause now it'll first get upscaled from 576 to 720, and then from 720 to 1080 :p.

This lower picture quality is to be expected anyway, it's what "usually" happens to ports vs the lead platforms. I'm pretty sure I'd notice though, cause i thought the dithered transparency looked bad even on PS3 (yes, in motion).

360 version looks fine to me. The majority of people who will make a big deal out of this probably don't even own HDTV's so the differences between the two versions are non-existent at that point. I would be much more concerned over a steady frame-rate than pixel clarity.

OMG fanboy orgy. Just come to terms with this: The 360 can do anything the PS3 can do, but the 360 is a retarded PC.
xD

So pandering to the PS3 made the 360 have a loss in quality! HAAAAAATE

What's the big deal with HD anyway?

FF I - FFXII were sub-HD, does this make them bad?

BTW, the XBox 360 is NOT a PC. The original XBox was, but the XBox 360 is its own custom design that shares some bits (CPU) with the PS3.

What's the big deal with HD anyway?

Go play a game on SD, then on HD, and you'll see what the big deal is. So XIII isn't 1080p even on the PS3. That's disappointing. But I suppose better than having sub-HD. That is really bizarre.

And even with the pictures blown up, remember they're going to be on a TV where they'll be even larger, probably making the differences more notable. But I've got a PS3, so it's not my concern. More worried about the actual gameplay.

Almost no games are 1080p, so that's not really disappointing at all.

Sucks for Xbox players if they intended on playing it on an HD tv, but I honestly don't think HD would push this game above mediocre. Just my opinion though.
