A lump sum thread for all of our comments on voice acting. Remember, if you're talking about voice acting of characters later in the game that aren't the main ones in the game pamplet, use a spoiler tag, OK?

I'm loving the voice acting so far, but I have no idea what kind of accent Vanille has yet. It's cute and unusual -I think it's Australian, but I'm not sure yet. XD I've not seen a character with poor voice acting yet. Star Ocean: The Last Hope this is not!

Sazh has exceptionally great voice acting, and Lightning's is great too.

I'm actually pretty... impressed. It's not perfect in every spoken line, but it's more than acceptable :p, at least for the main characters.

Sazh is outstanding and I think Snow's is up there too. Vanille, I don't know. It's like Fran's in XII in that I'm not sure if I love it or hate it.

I doubt she's going to be an all-time favorite but I certainly don't think Vanille's voice bad by any stretch.

But yeah Sazh and Snow are downright fantastic and the others are very, very good too.

Yeah, kind of like Fran for me as well. I wasn't sure at first, though I eventually loved Fran's voice. Fran was the only reason I really played FF12, actually.

Hopefully I like Vanille's that much!

Vanille's voice acting is certainly not as good as the others. It's bearable, if only because hers is the only one that annoying so far.

Sazh is the best, yeah, and Lightning is very good too. Snow has some very cliched lines, so it'd be hard for anyone not to make them some awkward, but it's quite allright. Vanille seems a bit out of place, but maybe it'll be fine later on when she finds her place in the group. Hope's voice is a bit whiny and annoying, but so is his character so the voice actor is definitely doing his job.

Oooh I love the voice acting! :D it's so great, except Vanille's. I think what bothers me most are the funny little noises she makes that are trying to be girly and cute but instead sound suspiciously sexual.

I think she'd grow on me if she stopped doing that cos it creeps me out.

I like everyone's voice except for Vanille's. It wouldn't be so bad if she didn't do the high-pitched "hehuhhhh!!!" gasp thing. But other than that, Sazh is by far the best voice acted. That guy did an outstanding job.

The only one I am a bit iffy about is Vanille's and it is not that bad but at times it feels a little inconsistent. It is hinted that she has a "dark" side/something she is hiding aside from being from Pulse, yet I feel that the happy-go-lucky attitude and the fact that she has a secret could be portrayed better

It's hard to pull off that super-cutsey voice in English. I still like Vanille's voice though. Sounds kiwi to me, ftr.

Why does Snow sound super familiar? Anyone? I'm thinking... Leon, RE4?

The voice acting is good. I still prefer Japanese on account of the cheesy lines not sounding so cheesy when they're not in English (yes, Snow, I get it, you're a hero...) but other than that I approve so far.

I'm going to say Fang is my Least Favorite of the main cast.

The cute little girl Vanille would have been, except she seemed to getter better as the game progressed, and during the moments she isn't talking in her normal cutesy voice and gets serious and/or down, her job is simply amazing.

If only her whole preformance was so good, then she'd be up there with Snow and Sahz.

speaking of voice acting that was strange when you heard it...

I like the english voices well enough, but for the first time ever in a video game, I prefer the Japanese ones. In english, Sahz doesn't sound old enough, Hope too old and too certain, Vanille not cute and sunny enough. Can't be helped, I suppose, the Japanese voice acting was just perfect for those three characters.

However, the english ones aren't bad by any means. And maybe it's just that I've listened to the Japanese ones for so long that I've gotten too used to them. It's not terrible voice acting as in X, it's up there with XII and that's fine.

But if SE were to offer an option to choose between english and Japanese, my choice would be made VERY quickly. If only for Hope's insecure-sounding voice and Vanille's cute sounds when she's hopping from rock to rock on Vile Peaks (and Sahz was so a perv).

Sazh and Snow are indeed great. And I always felt Vanille was supposed to be "out of it," justifying her weird voice acting.

Snow's "hero" lines are intentionally cheesy, showing his immaturity and that his for doing the right thing is sort of immature as well.

Sazh's voice acting is perfect, IMO. He's funny when he needs to be, but EXTREMELY powerful when serious. Sazh is an "ordinary guy," and his voice actor is really believable: a normal guy thrust into circumstances he's not accustomed to.

I wonder if they do Pulse accents in Australian Japanese. 'cause with Vanille, it's incredibly obvious that her voice actor is American. Why? Because at times she sounds like she's trying to be British. Fail! But - I like it anyway, it makes it sound a little twisted and exotic, like she's not quite from this world (Earth, that is). I like all the voices. Snow's is easily the best. Sahz is good. Hope is done perfectly - young, but not annoying like, well, most young characters you'd expect from Square Enix. They did a good job on all of them, really - they all suited the characters they were playing. Impressed, overall. Even the NPCs are done well.

Loony, I definitely agree on Vanille's accent in that it's just odd. I remember her switching between what one would consider "normal American", British, Austrailian, and even a bit of Southern in one or two spots. I heard her run the gamut in one set of lines somewhere, I forget where.

It bothers me. A lot. And lastly, I couldn't say it better myself...

I've just started the game (on chapter 3) but so far vanille is annoying not just the voice but the girly little run that she does. But anyway I was going to say that the only voice I had a problem with was Snow, probably not helped by all the cheesy hero lines but doesn't he sound like an American in one of these old war films? I mean the bad ones. As someone else said (i would quote them but i don't know how) about Final fantasy accents, I've never thought about whether Vaan and co were American or English or whatever because its Final Fantasy. But Snow sounds so American that its just weird. Probably offended the whole of America now.

I think the voices are very well done. They've come so far from FFX. Lightning, Snow, and Sazh in particular are well voiced.

Vanille is the only one who bugs. It sounds like an Australian person trying to do another accent and not doing a good job of it. I'm only on chapter 4, but my guess is that she has a different voice on purpose because she is from Pulse.

I've been really impressed with the voice acting so far. I do have some reservations with vanille though. It's not that her actor did a bad job, I'm just not a huge fan of the overly cutesy/girly personality she has, and her voice really reflects it. Super impressed with most of the voice acting, except Vanille.

Her voice is annoying to the point where I cringe when I listen to her speak. You know how when a guy tries to do a girl's voice, they can't get the higher pitch right and so it just sounds awful? That's kinda how Vanille's voice comes across. The original voice of the actress is obviously a more natural regular pitched voice, and she's forcing this sugary sweet high voice and it comes off like nails on a chalkboard.

It's weird because when Vanille is doing any of the voiceovers, the voice is much more moderate and normal sounding and then it's actually quite nice. But then whenever she's in dialogue with another character or when she's making those weird squawks and moans, it's insanely high pitched and unbearable. JUST SHUT UP.

I wish there was an option to switch certain characters from voice over to text.

Also, the minute I heard Vanille's voice for the first time I thought it sounded Australian, but the accent definitely comes and goes. Like someone else said, it's inconsistent.

I've been really impressed with the voice acting for this game. There's not one voice I haven't taken to, yes, even Vanille. :D Comparing it to FFX, which was pretty ahead of it's time, the difference is staggering. There's so much feeling and thought put into the dialogue, and I love love the fact that they talk more often in battle.

Lightning's voice is just perfect for her, stoic and calm, but with the edge to it that shows her soldier side. I like how in battle when she gets hit, she actually sounds a lot more feminine, as if that's when she lets down her tough façade a little in the heat of the moment. I also like the 'tch' sound she makes from time to time, especially in the presence of Snow.

Snow's voice is.. good. It's not outstanding for me, nor is it bad, then again up until now I haven't seen a lot of the guy. It fits him pretty well, and the emotion gets put across pretty well from the cheesy hero lines, to the more sentimental ones. I'll be able to make more of an opinion when I play him more I guess.

Sazh, I love Sazh  and I love his voice. Another very fitting one, the way he drawls his more sarcastic lines, then can sound absolutely heartbroken when he talks about his son. He has some great lines in battle, especially with Vanille.

I like Vanille's voice, though I admit it does stray from the accent time to time. I put it down to the fact that she's lived a damn long time and so she has a combination of the two going on. At least, that's my explanation for it :D I think she sounds sweet and wonderfully perky for her role, but her more serious tone is nice too.

Hope sounds a little too old for his age, but we can blame that on the hormones. He's another great one in battle when he gets hit and makes those desperate high pitched sounds when he's being laid into. He's whiny at times, but that's just him being a realistic kid, and it's refreshing to not have a gung ho six year old racing into battle without batting an eyelid like previous FF's.

Fang I also haven't heard enough of yet, but I like what I hear. She sounds confident, full of herself, and her accent is just gorgeous.. and doesn't waiver in the slightest.

As an additional point, I can't stand Serah, but I love her voice actress. Laura Bailey always has a habit of picking the lamest characters to voice.

She seems to have gone back to making the moaning and groaning noises now that I've completed the game and then teleported back to Edenhall. This makes me think it's location dependant. But yeah, during endgame in Pulse I've found she says "I've got to see this through!" or something like that instead. No moaning there! Just in Edenhall. I forgot how annoying it was. =|

I personally think Vanille's grunting sounds more like one of those Eastern European female tennis players. However, if you use Vanille's Eidolon's final move, she's clearly depicted as having an orgasm.

And when it gets dimissed afterwards, her body language is one of post-sex contentment IMO.

Ahh so Fang and Vanille's VAs are Australian. That explains why I thought it was a really shoddy attempt at British English :D

I also kept thinking "Fang, stop saying Cheers so much. We do say Thanks once in a while too" - but from an Australian context it makes a lot more sense. And Vanille's sounded very "well spoken" at times like RP English or something.

I really am no good at telling what people's accents are.

Well generally I thought the voice acting in this game was excellent (both this and XII were a long way ahead of the lead characters of X in that department). My only annoyance is probably scripting, and that's (as mentioned in the thread) Vanille's noises. I didn't think it needed all the "oooooooo-----wah!" during battle, it was like nails on a blackboard to me. Didn't sound like an orgasm either, more like some sort of retarded attempt at communicating with a cat.

I love the VA in this game. All the main characters are casted so well.

They're all pretty good to me. Vanille is my least favorite, but I'm hardly alone in that. I like Sahz and Fang the best, honestly. Though that's most likely because within all the terrible dialogue they tend to say the least dumb things.

I thought the voice acting was all fantastic, except for Dajh. Dajh annoyed the :bou::bou::bou::bou: out of me.

When Vanille summons Hecatoncheir, she screams like she's dying at one point. And the sounds she makes throughout battles is annoying! Why would they do this to such an awesome character?

Awesome character? Does she get awesome later on or something because I'd like her to die right now. It's been a long time since I've seen such an utterly annoying character who's so out of place with everything else in the game. I hate everything from her personality and her dialogue to her voice actress.

Luckily, just about everyone else is better so far. Some good voice acting all around with Sazh definitely being the best thus far, not to mention the best character.

I don't really understand the hate of Vanille's voice acting. I really like her accent, it's like Australian but not which makes it more fantasy-y.

Yeah what is it with the Australian hate? xD It's better than hundreds of American voices.

I have no problem with the Australian in her accent. It's her often inappropriately bright and cheery dialogue combined with an annoyingly high pitched voice. Just listening to the sound of her voice grates my nerves.

I prefer her to Rikku and Penelo, though. :P

I can't see how anyone could prefer her to Rikku and Penelo. Both had much better voice actresses.

In general, I like the voice acting. I like the Australian accents, even if they're not supposed to be outright Aussie and more of a fantasy-world Aussie.

I think Fang's voice lends itself to the word "mate" quite well. She should've used it. xD

I just beat the game, and I have to say, I was blown away by the voice acting. I was still suffering from shock after Mena Suvari's mutilation of Aerith's voice and my eardrums hadn't quite healed yet, so I wasn't expecting such a performance from the main character VAs.

Lol, I love Sazh's VA the best, I think. "Follow the old man's lead", "This dampness sure is damp", "You think it'll all be sugar and rainbows?" are some of my favorite quotes.

Fang's VA was great, too. I was surprised to learn her accent wasn't natural.

I was worried about Lightning for a while from what I had heard in one of the early trailers. Back then, it was rumored that Kim Mae Guest would do her voice and I was real iffy on that. But Ali Hillis did the character justice and put all my fears to rest.

Nearing the end of the game and I think overall the main cast has been pretty good. There's some awful dialogue, but the voicework does some decent things with it and is pretty impressive at points.

Haha damn, I knew I'd heard Dysley's voice somewhere before. It's S. Scott Bullock who voiced Logos in FFX-2. Now I'll constantly expect him to say "you're too slow, little girl" or "three.. plus.. one.. makes.. HOW MANY?" :p

Oh and Jihl = Paula Tiso = Lulu. *removes glasses* "you truly are clueless. Are you sure it's your memory that's the problem?"

Most of the other X cast seem to have been in it, in minor Cocoon roles.

Yep. Not sure how the VA did it, but he managed to turn a dull, cliched douchebag into a likable one. He even made it bearable when Snow was acting like a complete parody of himself (seriously, how many times did the guy dash off in a rage at Barthandelus only to get knocked back by a forcefield?)

Ahahahaha, I noticed that too, I loved it! I felt that Snow had some good lines, too. Basically the off-hand ones he makes every now and then. When he's being serious, though, he's crap.

So am I the only Australian to comment in this thread? I guess I can provide some perspective on Vanille and Fang's accent.

I've got to say, I was shocked when I first heard Vanille. I looked at my friend who was playing and went "What?! She's Australian!" It is very, very strange hearing Australian accents next to American ones - it makes me realise how strange my own accent is to other people. Throughout the whole game Vanille's accent sounds normal to me, so I don't understand what people are talking about when they say she slips between British/American... the only thing that sounds weird is the way she inflects some things and the unnatural high pitched voice, but otherwise she sounds like a regular Australian girl.

Fang, ah Fang. Well, Fang sounds like a bogan. Especially in battle when she yells "Appreciate it!" I laughed at that. A bogan, for those who don't know, is the Australian equivalent of white trash, and its a very particular accent that screams uneducated, lower class, etc... so its really jarring for an Australian to hear Fang talking like that.

Listen to this clip: YouTube - Australia's Got Talent 2009 - Kath and Kim (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lHycgyVA8GA&feature=related)

Not sure about the rest of you, but I can hear the difference between the presenter's accent (normal Australian) and the Kath & Kim impersonators (the two weirdly dressed women - bogan Australian).

Anyway, I've gotten used to it and I think it suits Fang. She's kind of rough and tumble, a bit derelict, and the accent suits that... even though its not really a compliment, but whatever.

As for all the other voices, I love them. Lightning is as someone else said perfectly stoic and calm, but compassionate at the same time, a really well done voice. I love Hope's voice - it's cute, and young, and mature at the same time. His actor brings out Hope's insecurity but allows him to grow up at the same time. Sazh and Snow, yes, excellent. Very happy with the VA work in this game.

I'm Australian (quite a few of EoFFers are actually) and I'm 100% with you on Fang. I half expected her summon to transform into a Torana. But I think Vanille isn't speaking strictly in an Australian accent. I have noticed the odd word being pronounced in what I'd consider a British way. Having said that, she certainly isn't speaking like Balthier either.

But maybe I'm reading too much into it because I'm Australian.

edit: In your bringing up of Australia's Got Talent, I'm reminded of Dannii Minogue. That's Exhibit A right there of an Australian accent that's been influenced by British.

Mm... Balthier. <3

I haven't noticed her slip ups, but then her VA has been in the US for a few years so her accent is likely muddled by now! Do Australian accents sound more British when enunciated properly? Growing up I used to get told I sound "posh" or British a lot, but its just because I enunciate clearly... maybe Vanille's VA is doing something like that.

Anyway, its really weird listening to Vanille and Fang speaking next to the other characters. Everytime they talk I have this moment of ????! cause I'm so used to Final Fantasy sounding American or British, to hear our own accent next to an American one is just... like when you hear your voice recorded for the first time, but over and over again. You think I'd be used to it by now at 11 chapters in, but nope haha.
