In the evolving of FF games there must have been a lot of times when the creators got so drunk that they must have thought the monsters they created were a good idea. Most of those were put into this game. I mean, look at this guy:

http://img297.imageshack.us/img297/8266/95573207.png

He can breathe fire, can fly, has the bottom of a hornet and the chin of J. Leno. I mean, seriously?

Who did you think was the most ridiculous monster in FFVIII?

Buels~! Aren't they the most feeble things ever, despite being so very large? xD I am a fan of their spinning wings though!

The Elastoids are pretty... uh... I mean who set out to design an anti-personnel weapon and came up with this.

Go for the legs!!! It's our only chance at stopping them

I loved that Wendigoes played basketball with you. I thought that was brilliant xD Oh, and the hockey guys as well. One of my favourite enemies right there.

Those must have been some reaaaaally specific breeding conditions for monsters to become so much like hockey players!

And the Elastoids fit the atmosphere of breaking into Esthar really well, I thought, even if they were eccentric~!

What about those insect bugs all the way in the beginning of the game, that while you draw magic, repeatedly teabag you for hours. xD

OMG I always got irritated by them...

Or

the hexagon dragon is also a weird monster... I never seen anything more Alien inspired monster than that one in a ff series..

I like Elastoids. They look pretty imo.

As for the most ridiculous looking monster? Hmm, I don't know.. I don't think I've come across one where I was just like "wtf?". Perhaps Vysages? Giant mummy things stuck underground does seem kinda strange.

I'd have to say caterchipillars (as per the Spoony One), buels and geezards. Man, geezards are pretty cool looking, but are among the wimpiest enemies in the game. And they drop screws! HOW?!?!?

For some reason, I didn't mind elastoids as much. Though they are weird. And are they actually a monster? A robot? Some kind of weird esthar bio-weaponry?

Though I do like elvoret and elnoyles. They're pretty bad-ass looking, so what's wrong with them? Its a frickin' demon! Its supposed to be scary! Giant hornet - scary. Jay Leno's chin - SCARY.

Oh, man, the caterchipillars. The designers must have taken something pretty good when they came up with the design for that one. That's true for most of the monster designs, really.

Mesmerizes were pretty weird.

"The horn broke off!"

It sure did.

All of these are fine examples, but to be quite honest, this game did have the weirdest selection of freaks.

I think it was the BradyGames strategy guide for FFX that had a number of interviews with the staff, including the monster designer—Tetsu Tsukamoto, I guess. One of his questions was which monster he was most proud to have made, to which he replied, "The Geezard from Final Fantasy VIII."

And I reeled at this, because the Geezard is the worst monster design ever.

heh :p

They're pretty mean-looking, I associate them with crocodiles, WITH THE BODY OF A FEARSOM TADPOLE. AND OMG CLAWZ. They just needed to be stronger. AND NOT DROP SCREWS.

But hands down, the caterchipillar has to be the worst enemy design ever

The fact that it bops you with its abdomen is dumb. And not intimidating. In the least.

If you look at the bottom, it looks like it's capable of self-procreation.

ah.....so that's what it's for. Perhaps when it attacks it's just confused. Not unlike a confused puppy dog humping your leg.

Imps are weird to me. I don't know why, they're just so devilish looking... and I LOVE T-Rexaurs. Which is weird for me since dinosaur movies give me nightmares... haha.

maybe there was just something incredible about geezards that didn't come across in their model. Or animations. Or card.

Screws are pretty important for making weapons. You even need them for Irvine's best weapon, I believe.

I don't think you could get Screws from any other monster.

One thing that always pissed me off about Geezards is that they're near impossible to Card. Anything you do to them kills them!

That specific combination isn't very unusual. :p

VIII did have some ugly and strange monster designs. The hockey ones were way out there. I thought it was the Galbadia's hockey team fighting us. i don't know which one takes the cake though.

Stylistically FFVIII has among my favorite monster designs. But I have a problem with Tiamat, not that the design is bad in of itself, but it's a palette swap of Bahamut while Tiamat has been usually portrayed as a multi-headed dragon.

y'know, none of these are even close to ridiculous as some of FFVII's "monsters". For instance, see hell house:

http://www.cavesofnarshe.com/ff7/images/enemies/hell%20house.gif

WTF? WHY IS THERE A HOUSE ATTACKING ME

I think FFVII had even more retarded enemies, to the point that it was tough to take it seriously.

cavesofnarshe doesn't like when you steal their bandwidth :(

I thought the hell house was a great is completely random enemy. More random objects need to kill you. Spork boss encounter for FF XV!

But could you imagine how retarded it would be in say FFXIII to walk up a path and see a frickin' house bouncing about, then start freaking out when draw near?

Yet another example of the push for ultra-realism killing the fun in the series. :)

The snow lion, how is it a lion?
Jumbo cactuar, his moustache is actually bigger.
Lamest Ultima Weapon Ever
And scince when do lv 35 behemoths cast meteor without being hit?
Cerbeus looks pretty strange
I like eden
And why does geezard jump at you, bite, and then turn around.
Lastly, Why the heck does Seifer hold his blade at such a lame angle
