I've seen advertisements for this everywhere. Does anyone actually play it?

I don't, like every other advertisement I see has some sad blond girl tied to a tree. If they want me to play it, they should show that chick kicking ass.

Hey, Custer's Revenge needed a sequel!

Also I heard Evony was made by Al Qaeda sympathizers to fund turrism.

I was going to try and play it the one day, but I got... distracted(for lack of an appropriate word) so I never played. What's it supposed to be like anyways? :S

I don't believe there actually is a game. The advertising must be some sort of social experiment.

Actually I think it's hilarious marketing. "Sex sells! Screw subtlety, just put boobs everywhere!"

That goodness for Wikipedia or someone here would actualy have to play it to find out.

Reviews for Evony have praised the appearance, but have been mostly critical of its derivative gameplay.
The game was cited as doing "an amazing job at making the game look and feel appealing to all gamers" by New Zealand-based Stuff, although was criticised for the amount of time and effort needed to excel in the game. Stuff also noted the shortcomings of a system like Evony's where one could essentially buy one's way through the game.
The Guardian pointed out that it was so similar to Sid Meier's Civilization series that it felt like a ripoff, going so far as to essentially steal its name

and:

Evony's 2009 online advertising campaign was criticized for featuring what The Guardian called "a string of increasingly racy images." The images depicted females who, as the ad campaign continued, became more and more unclothed, culminating in an ad that was simply a bra-clad pair of breasts and were in sexually suggestive poses, none of which had any relevance to the game itself
Which makes the adds even more hilarious as there is no sexually provocative content in the game at all. (underlines mine)

I like how the ads started by depicting an elven-looking maiden with soft focus filters to imply some kind of Tolkienesque fantasy setting, but now might simply feature some ordinary, contemporary girl. I can only assume they're going to keep scrimping on production values until the cleavage is all just hastily-assembled felt and paper-mâché.

I have Adblock Plus, I don't ever see ads. Screenshots?

Just go on a softcore porn site and you'll see pretty much the same thing.

It took me only 3 refreshes to get one. :D Often it starts off by showing a woman's face, then it glides further down her body, stops at her boobs, then continues down to her panties and stops there before it returns to her face again.

Haha, that's fucking ridiculous. Kudos for them if it works.

My favorite is the horizontal add banner with just a picture of boobs that slowly scrolls back and forth, and an 'Evony' logo in the corner.

So your telling me... there are no actual scantly clad women in this game? NO BABES?!

Indeed. Evony's original name was Civony, back before the hilariously off-topic ad campaign started.

Calling it a ripoff of Civilization is smirching the name of the Civ series though. I had tried the game (it was free, I was bored, and back then it was actually promoting gameplay), but it really is vastly inferior, even to the newer Civs that I hate. It has a terrible pace, and far more tedious repetition than the Civilization games have.

I actually have a friend who played it and got pretty into it for a while, so it is a legitimate online game. I just can't take the ads seriously though, they are absolutely hilarious.

As a straight woman the ads sort of turned me away from it.

Apparently the game was made by Chinese gold farmers with shady business practices. The game is free but if you want to do anything fast you need to shell out the cash. I’ve herd just chatting costs you so much per line.
