And who doesn't? I've come across some really great animes recently, due to suggestions from some of you, or just finding them on animefreak.

I just finished Elfen Lied, and now I'm working on three at once, Samurai Champloo, Blood+, and Pandora Hearts.

What animes are you watching? What are some of your favorites?

Currently Mogi and I are streaming Monster together. It started out AMAZING, but now that we're in the middle the twists are getting kind of lame. We're expecting it to end just as wonderfully as it started though. Some shows just kinda lull in the middle. We're gonna watch Lovely Complex next!

I go to an anime club and we're currently watching Higurashi no Naku Koro ni, Welcome to the NHK, Fairy Tail, Chocolate Underground, and Hetalia. Higurashi and NHK are two of my favorite series of all time! Fairy Tail not so much >.>

I don't watch a lot of anime. It just Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood on [adult swim] and that is it. Currently reading a lot of manga though: Claymore, Zettai Karen Children, Hayate X Blade, Hayate the Combat Buttler, Kaibutsu Oujo. Caught up with the scanners on all of those. I also reread through Yokohama Kaisashi Kikou every so often.

I'm not currently watching anything. I have found that in my old age, I rarely try to randomly draft shows from recommendations or the newest season airing in Japan. Too random, and with the quality of the industry in decline, this anime watcher is full of DO NOT WANT. If I don't recognize the studio or the series, it needs a strong recommendation, and so far, only two people here come even close to being able to casually mention a show and get me interested: Momiji and JKTrix.

However, I plan on grinding through Pokemon again at a slow pace, Katanagatari (which comes out once a month), and plan on picking up Trapeze/Kuchu Buranko.

That new Hetalia Axis Powers series about world events. Poor Greece.

Does anyone have some seriously emotional and addictive animes to recommend? Like, will you make you laugh and cry like Japanese and Korean soap operas? I don't mind cheesiness.

I would actually recommend Elfen Lied, its got action, drama, emotion and some very sad parts. But overall I thought it was quite good.

Kare Kano (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kare_Kano) fits this description! I think there were some issues with the anime though. If you like it you should probably switch to the manga!

Nodame Cantabile Finale
Katanagatari
Hanamaru Kindergarten

Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha
and I plan on starting Tatami Galaxy soon enough. I've been psyched for it for months, and haven't even got around to watching it yet. :|

You know what, if people can watch Wings of Honneamise and not get bored, then maaaaybe I'll contribute something more substantial to these anime threads.

I think Elfen Lied is a bad show, but I don't feel strongly enough about it to argue with all you guys that like it. There are certainly much worse shows. But folks saying that it's their favourite really do need to expand just a little more. Elfen Lied is a good step away from the stuff that people usually see on TV, so if EL is your gateway drug to the vast and infinite universe of anime, then I really can't hate on it so much.

But yeah. Get back to me after any of you watch Wings of Honneamise (a movie) and tell me how you liked it, and be honest. I really like the movie, but it's not something universally appealing. Then I might have a better idea of what you will or won't like.

I think Elfen Lied is a bad show

I'd say it's comparable to listening to Linkin Park when you're an early teenager. Elfen Lied captures the adolescent need for what is edgy and violent and anything that's a shock image. I don't want to start an anime vs. cartoon discussion, but most Westerners consider anime to fall under the category of cartoon. It's not like they know better. And then, they see so much blood coming out of something, and being caused by a girl; if that isn't a shock, I don't know what is.

But people grow up. They stop listening to Linkin Park and stop saying that it's their favorite band. I was fortunate enough to have not watched Elfen Lied back when I was discovering anime. Then I could see it for what it is, an excellent gateway anime, but like drugs, there's so much better.

Screw you, I still love Linkin Park.

I tried reading the Manga for Elfen Lied, but lost interest very quickly. I liked the actual plot stuff, but the character interactions were very out of place. I can't stand reading about school boy/girl interactions in the middle of some kick ass developments going on around them. Basing an otherwise good anime around school kids ruins the vast bulk of the genre.

I''m on ep.8 of Pandora Hearts, that :bou::bou::bou::bou: is trippy. The monsters in it kind of remind me of D. Gray Man but I don't know why. It's really good, and good for you Rye, Elfen Lied is great xD.

I just went trough every single episode of Ga-Rei Zero today.

Seriously... watch it. It starts off kinda "meh" and "I've seen this before" etc. But without spoiling too much, the end of the very first episode turns things upside down.

Then, it just gets better and better. The ending had me all emotional.

...in fact, it felt like the first anime I've watched in ages that actually had a really good and non-cheesy ending.

Dark as in gritty or dark as in despair? Neither one of those are particularly strong in either category. I may have some suggestions, and JKTrix certainly would know what to watch, but based on what you've already seen, I wouldn't suggest anything without you signing a waiver.

Death Note has a dose of gloomyness and "cold attitude" going on trough a lot of the show, which I'd assume can be considered "dark". I'd suppose the pretty greytoned animations helps a lot in visualizing a dark atmosphere too.

Never watched FMA, so I can't say anything about that one. But from the screenshots/clips I've seen, I've always thought it was indeed more of a humor-filled kind of show than an anime with a dark atmosphere. =O

"I love anime" is a bit of a silly thing to say, considering how much japanese animation out there that absolutely sucks.

I treat anime just like I treat animation from anywhere in the world. If it's good, I'll watch it, regardless of what it's called. If it's bad ,I won't, regardless of what it's called.

The last japanese animation I watched was Howl's moving castle, and it was wonderful.

Hmmm, right now my current shounen (because I always have one going on) is Fairy Tale and I am really enjoying it so far, but once it gets the 100th episode, I will probably become bored with it like every other shounen out there. :/ I hope not, but meh.

Sailor Moon
Natsume Yuujinchou

and more...

Elfen Lied isn't actually supposed to be in english, but some other language in which "lied" means "song", and thus Elfen Lied = "Elven Song" or something along those lines, which isn't really a bad title. As for the others, I agree. Though they are far from the worst ones.

I mean... as much as I love the Visual Novel which the anime is based on and its awesome characters, the title "Fate/Stay Night" is simply so terrible it's embarrassing.

...it's far safer to judge animes by their front-covers than by their titles.:greenie:

Because people are retards? Nor just because it is on one anime site does it prove anything. Try searching "Ben 10" on MyAnimeList (MAL) and you get nothing. Your point is moot.

Anime, in general, refers to Japanese animation. There are more current trends to include anime-style or Asian influenced animations too, but for the most part the fandom doesn't recognize them as such.

Ben 10 is not anime by any most standards. I would say Avatar: The Last Airbender is anime before Ben 10.
