View Full Version : Legend of Dragoon
This is an old, old game by this point, but I've been replaying a lot of games recently, and really have been wanting to go at this one again! It's so much fun, and I had a blast with it when I was a kid.
Did anyone else play it? Love it? Hate it? I don't remember it being very popular; I only knew one other person who played it. A guy at GameStop once scoffed at me for liking it too.
Opinions? :p

I love this game! The way it had you attack was cool to me. Cause everything else at the time was like you just had to sit and watch an attack. This game made me feel like I was actually important and engaged in it :D

There was one point of voice acting in the game.
Meru: "Look Dart, is that it?"
Dart: "Yeah."
Wonderful use of voice acting. Great game though.

Voice acting was used in a few cutscenes, as well as the announcment of the attacks names. :p
Omg! Voice acting was atrocious in the game.
"The Black Monster?!"
I used to die listening to it. Or when Rose eventually found out who Zieg was: "Ohhhh, it cannot be!"
Other than that, I loved the battle system, and being able to turn into the dragoons and get a whole new set of attacks was great. My favorite was Meru; I liked the hammer as a weapon, the water element, and the blue color appealed to me. 8D
I hated Shana. Miranda was much better, and had mommy issues.
Who did everyone else like?

Rose, easily my favorite character out of that game.
Legend of the Dragoon is a great example of a game that isn't so high on itself as the next coming of the genre. It isn't outstanding in the least, just very fun to play.

My favorite two to keep with me was albert and rose/haschel...ok anyone but meru...probably cause last time I played it I was still all emo-ish so happy people got on my nerves. I just like how albert was...well albert....a king not so full of himself that he could do the fighting on the front lines to. Kongal(ol?) was so freaking powerful that it wasnt funny in my game.
But saddening to me, I trusted someone for the first time in ages(my manager) and let him borrow my copy. His dumbass left it on the hood of his car...it fell off and smashed the case open and the discs stayed there for a day or so cause they couldnt find it, and it got pollen all over it and idk if itll work when I clean it:(:(:(

This is yet another game that I own but haven't beaten. Need to get on that. I've attempted many times but I always seem to stop around the same place: somewhere around some gravity-related valley or something, I think. I don't really remember.

The game does have some good music. And great locations! I loved that water city, whatever it was called. And that flower city. And some of those old cities where you searched for the signets were fun to wander around in. :p

They could do FF style and just have a totally new story, characters, setting, etc.

I had increadible bad luck with this game, the first time I bought it I completed and loved the game, untill the day I stupidly lent it to a mother smurfer who I never saw again, the second time I bought it I had it for a week before it was stolen at my brothers birthday party >.<
If I had to choose a favorite character it would definatly be Lavitz he is just the best, on the flip side I was quite dissapointed with his replacement Albert... his voice was just wrong.
He sounded like Tom Hanks.

Legend of Dragoon shouldn't be as good as it is, it's ropey, it has an atrocious translation, but god damn I do love it. Has some great music as well;
lol I totally agree. The game is pretty uneven. It seems like for every positive there's a negative. The music is awesome; the voice acting is terrible. The game has some great plot twists and an incredible backstory; the translation is botched. The battle system is a lot of fun; boss battles drag on foreeeeeeeeever and the game is really repetitive. The prerendered backgrounds give Chrono Cross a run for its money; the character models are bland. Etc, etc.
I had a total blast with the game, though. It had some great secrets. I looooooved the Divine Dragon (but hated the Divine Dragoon). Also, the whole concept and visual execution of the Dragoons was fantastic. I'm still dying for a sequel. I would buy it day one.
This game wasn't a masterpiece but it was so fun. I did love the execution of the dragoons, and I actually liked the character models, haha... really campy though.

Being a huge Sailor Moon fan at the time, I loved the transformations!
It was pretty great back when I played it, even though the battle system felt incredibly limited. I also found the ending very unsatisfying. Mainly because I really didn't like the idea of Rose dying. :(

The localization/script is weird, and the whoosh before battles takes forever, but I love the battle system and music. This game should definitely be remade.
Lloyd was an odd villain. I liked him. I liked how he was "Hooded Man" for so long, as if we couldn't figure out who that was. My god, you could see the outline of his clothes in the "Hooded Man" art in the game book.

I liked pretty much everyone in this game (even the bad guys), the story just seemed to untangle so slowly. Kongol... didn't he have a Kimahri complex?
This is yet another game that I own but haven't beaten. I've attempted many times but I always seem to stop around the same place: somewhere around some gravity-related valley or something.Yeah, well, that gravity field sure does crank up the encounter rate... yeesh. I thought the final boss battle dragged on and on and wondered if the guy would die. Lemme see... that thing was... a larva-thing, I think. Maybe my level was just too low, because I had to use every item in my inventory just to stay alive.
I really hated that linear world map too. Now I just miss world maps in general.
lol
I would SO purchase a Legend of Dragoon two. But I don't even know what it could be about. I can't exactly remember how the game ends... Melbu Frahma... eh.I once wrote a fanfic sequel. I include a ballet dancer and a fisherman to make the characters more unique. One of them was, I think, the only race not to become a playable character in the original game. You know, you got your Giganto and your Wingly, but there were more. Well, I at least know I used a tiny one. My story didn't make it very far though.
Does anyone remember that awkward special attack, Astral Drain though? With Rose? With the blood? :|
OMG. Isn't that the one where she hovers into the air and spreads her legs? That whole sequence is damned awkward.
I'll tell you one thing, I could never get the top level of the transformation moves, the one where the thing spins around? Hard as balls.I could do it here and there. Though it could get frustrating. I still wonder if Kongol was supposed to have more Additions.

Dear lord this game was and still is amazing. I actually was at Toys R' Us many years ago when I saw it, it came down to get that or Chrono Cross. I made a post about parasite eve which got me wanting to make this thread. How many people have played the four disk playstation 1 game brought to you by square soft . I know I have.
It just so happens its an RPG that I can play besides the final fantasy games. I liked it so much that I learned everything for every character. I also mastered the additions. I even went and bought Legends of manna from game stop to see what it was like. Sadly it didn't work and I wasted my money.
Even so, how did you like the games? Would you like to see more like it? Have you played or finished it?
Also... This game has one of my most favorite endings in any game I have ever played. Peace!

Legend of Dragoon was made by Sony actually.
I played about half of it once and it was decent but nothing special. Still, for a first effort at a major 3D RPG it was pretty impressive what they pulled off. Shame they didn't make another game at least even if it wasn't a sequel just to see if they could improve from there.
Didn't they make Legaia? Or was that just published by Sony? Or I'm just way off base
Regardless. I've recently hacked my PSP and now have a vast collection of old-school gaming goodness on the go. And decided since the PSP is so good at emulating PSOne and I no longer have any -other- kind of Playstation, I should go back and check out the games I missed. This being one of them. (I tried getting Chrono Cross, but the RAR fails to unpack right at 100% -_-) So I'll be giving this game a try for the first time in the very near future~
Thread merge caused double post; merged posts -> Success! -Rantzien
I -thought- the other thread seemed rather short. There's 2 Dragoon threads xD So I'll just reiterate here since this is the real thread. I just put Dragoon on my PSP to try it out for the first time. Yey
Edit: Crap... Its in Spanish. Gotta download it again -_- Oh well lol...
Looks good though o.o

Didn't they make Legaia? Or was that just published by Sony? Or I'm just way off base
Legaia was made by an internal developer with SCEI, but I can't find out if they were the same team or even if they had members of the same team as Legend of Dragoon since the developer for it is just listed as SCEI. Since Legaia came out before Dragoon though I'd guess they were made by different teams, but both within Sony. Maybe someone else out there in the internet would know more.
Haha way to go, Rantz!
Well I managed to get another copy of Dragoon. Along with about 7 other games, which unfortunately put me in the mood for other stuff. But I'll get to it soon! Assuming it works this time. But my luck on downloads hasn't been too bad, really
Also I love the graphics in this game. Its right when the PS was starting to get used to the whole 3D thing, with a little pre-rendering, and everything's blocky and cute. I loved that look in Xenogears, and Legaia, and Grandia, etc. So this game is definitely my style~
Oh I totally agree about the graphics! I think the blockiness looked doll-like and cute, and I loved it in Legend of Legaia to (or at least in the battle system). Also, I enjoyed the color scheme of LoD, which is a strange comment, but I DIIDD.
Surprisingly I'd started playing this game not too long ago. I need to finish up the last three dungeons but I'm far too lazy for that.
The Addition system is really great and the last time I saw something like it was in an MMO made by Level 5 not too long ago. I forgot the name though. Galaxy something.
I wouldn't mind them remaking this game, but I think the farthest it will ever go will be a download on the PSN or ported to the PSP. Which would be interesting on the PSP. If they tried to make a sequel though, then the storyline would have to be mad legit for me to like it.

Ha! I just fired it up. Time has not been kind to this game. I forgot how ugly they were -outside- of battle xD Still cute but in kind of an ugly way. I guess maybe their character "sprites" (models?) outside of battle hadn't quite made it to the time period I was talking about. But yeah. They look a lot better in-battle. At least FF7 knew its limitations and tried to stylize the ugliness outside of battle to the cute little popeye lego characters lol
Just beat the game a few minutes ago. The Melbu Frahma fights were pretty much a joke but I really enjoyed the last scene with all the characters' epilogues...watery eyes and all. :-(

I really enjoyed the game. I remember back when I got my Playstation magazine demo, I wasn't really impressed but a few years later I decided to buy it since it was on sale for dirt cheap. It was actually really fun when starting from the beginning. I liked the battle system immensely. I wished there was a little more story to it, but it was decent enough. Just talking about it gets me in the mood to play it again.
My game crashed :[ apparently going Dragoon in certain boss fights (usually main human enemies) on emulated versions makes the game hang at the end of the fight. So now I gotta go back and try to win without going Dragoon. Phooey...

That sounds terrible! I was always dependent on the Dragoon transformations, I never tried a battle without it. Which battle?
I think his name was Duke? I'm still on the first disk. But I hear the same thing happens later on if you transform fighting some chick who's name begins with an L... And after looking it up again, it appears her name is Lenus. So yeah. Those to crash the game. Possibly others
That's strange, I never had that problem on mine. And I think your "Duke" is actually Emperor Doel!
No. First disk. He's some thief thing. He sets traps and stuff. I have a feeling he's either going to be a good guy or neutral. Only fighting because he assumes we came to steal some treasure. His name might be Drake
docta fizz
06-12-2010, 04:03 AM
he's the one gaurding the water temple or whatever, he's not very hard, but you'll have a problem with lenus unless you save up for a legendary casque, just giving you a heads up, her magic attacks+dragon magic attacks are rough, but with a casque, and possibly meru in the party you shouldn't have too much problems, the thief just takes fighting the battle the right way :D and possibly a few magic attack items
I don't do a whole lot more damage as a Dragoon. So the idea of going through the game without transformations doesn't really bother me in itself. But with the retardedly low item limit amount, using Rose to heal as a Dragoon kinda comes in handy. Without becoming dragoons I'd need magic items and healing items aplenty. And there's not enough room to really make up for the lack of casting actual spells. If there wasn't such a low limit I'd just stock up and rough it out. But as it stands, I think I might have to call it quits. I beat Drake and tested it out on the chick after him and the game hung then too. So I think a lot of boss fights here on in are gonna be a problem. Not impossible, but just a little too annoying for me. Do you ever get to carry more than just 32 items?
docta fizz
06-13-2010, 02:39 AM
nope
32 is always the max. Until you get Meru, attacking items are somewhat useless unless you use Shana in your main party. I played most of the game without transformations either (with the exception of Meru transforming to heal the party) and it wasn't that hard.
Markus. D

I adore the game <3
Fantastic Soundtrack, World and pretty <3
I always used Meru. She was stronger than Shana and had healing attacks!
Duke isn't very far into the game at all. The game has epic amounts to go.

The spell items do 2 - 3 times as much damage as my standard attacks. Easily on par with casting spells as a dragoon. So that would definitely come in handy. Its just more annoying because I'm getting hit harder than I can heal by defending. So I'd need plenty of healing items during a boss fight. And my inventory consists of more than just spell and healing items. If I'd forgo transformations I'd have to make sure my inventory is nothing but healing and spell items. But then what happens when I get poisoned or something. 32 is a retarded limit. This isn't Resident Evil

i've beaten the game without using dragoon more than 2 or 3 times, mostly it involves a little extra grinding at every locations, an extra 2-5 levels at a boss makes it extremely different. also make sure you get the bandits shoes/scarf and dancers shoes, probably the single most useful item in the game. you've got this and it's still worth playing without using dragoon, in fact I may play it again to see if I can beat it sans-transformation :D challenge accepted!
More power to ya :P My argument isn't that its going to be impossible for me. More that its going to be annoying for me. And saying "grinding will fix that" no, unfortunately grinding ruins RPGs for me. I'll just have to wait and play it on a real PSOne whenever I get another one. Though there's a chance that a new custom firmware update or popsloader for PSP could fix it as well. Either way, I'll just have to wait to finish it :] 'Cause right now the encounter rate is just on the cusp of turning me off. Grinding will definitely turn me off. And I don't want to wind up hating this game lol

I definentally leveled up a few times without boss fights, but mostly I leveled up my combos, huge difference between doing 200% damage and doing 350%, so I'm not so much talking about the level but getting "volcano" up is important, see what I'm saying?
Indeed. I was abusing additions. And no, the encounter rate isn't terrible. But it was a tad high, and having to grind would just make it worse. And I've gained a few levels outside of boss battles, but there is definitely a -huge- difference. Right now I get about 30 xp per fight. The last boss battle I won got me 1500 xp. Crazy

yeah they really don't hide the fact that minor fights are insignificant... lolz
yeah, but that's the beginning of the game. I don't remember, but I assume it must change. I've played a few RPGs where leveling up was slow in the beginning.
Actually it's like that for the whole game. I think the exp gain is so little because they expect you to never run from random encounters, so you can train Additions without being overleveled afterward. At least, that's how I see it.

Though my comments may sound like it, I never found like the regular battles were a waste of time. As it is mentioned they are vital for developing abilities. I just found it interesting that I only ever leveled up during boss fights. If a character from my main party was dead at the end of a boss they were permanently one level behind :)
Hmm. I need to replay this game or something. That's a strange thing for an RPG, since bosses are plot-dependent, it makes your leveling up plot-dependent. Can never exceed a certain bar where you are in the plot. Sounds annoying! But I don't remember this very well.
Maybe because I focused more on the additions.
Yeah it feels kinda like FF8 in that regard. Your additions are more important than your levels. Since you don't power up much. Firing off a few perfect additions are more powerful than leveling up and expecting to do a harder one-hitter. It seems purposely paced in that regard, so you're always in a range of levels the developers wanted you to be at whatever point in the game. Its not a hindrance as far as I can tell. The boss fights I fought weren't hard so I assume the whole game is that way

honestly I think the first time I played this i skipped as many battles as possible, it makes doel a hard mo-fracky, if you can beat him your pretty much set for the rest of the game

32 is a retarded limit. This isn't Resident Evil
I beat the game thanks to my 32 items. Most likely, the creators didn't intend this to be played on emulator.
Har har point taken :P But "thanks" to the limit? Explain?

My sequel wish list.
1. Additions are nice, but let's have other skills i.e. Magic for outside Dragoon form.
2. Better voice acting plz.
3. This may sound childish, but I can't tand Ice and Water being grouped together. SEPERATE!
4. Lavitz.

lol For some reason I frequently think about basic elements and always have to categorize ice separate. It seems weird to me to have it grouped too. Sometimes its put with Wind as well, just to get water as a separate element. Nothing wrong with having them all separate. Fire comes from heat, its not really a by-product of something else. So its counter part should be separate too. Though I'm not particularly fond of earth and vegetation, or wind and lightning being grouped either. But now I'm straying drastically. (Hm... Dark, Light, Lightning, Wind, Earth, Fire, Ice, and Plant..? ......... HEART)

I just started disc 3 and have gone through without any dragoon transformations :D, I haven't done any grinding unless you count searching through everything to find items. It's worth it as I now have 2 LC's mwahaha one more and it will be done

My mom and I played this game together. I navigated, she played, and, 130 hours later we beat the game at level 47-ish. That was YEARS ago.
WTB sequel. ><
