Recently, there has been a thread about a female spoken word poet (http://forums.eyesonff.com/lounge/131737-what-women-deserve.html) (I can't quite remember her name). She did have a lot of talent, but it wasn't to my liking. Myself, NorthernChaosGod and eternal essence had expressed interest in some Def Poetry Jam performances. So I thought I should dedicate a thread to Def Poetry Jam so we can all share and discuss the poems/poets that we really like.

I'll start it off with this poem by Gemineye (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YPz9lL0y8sE).

So please share poems with us all because knowledge is power. Kill ignorance and enlighten us all. One love.

Isn't this just rapping minus a backing beat? Or is rap poetry with a backing beat?

Or is rap poetry with a backing beat?

It would be closer to this. But not only this. I prefer my spoken word less "rappy" than Gemineye (though he's great).

ENVEY. I love Def poetry. Ishle Yi Park is one of my favorites (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kMjJBQeGQ3c).

This is amazing too. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PodV7uiQQrs)

That first one makes me want to see if I can still get Def Poetry Jam on DVD still.

As someone who will be teaching in a year, and works in classrooms now, I appreciate Taylor Mali's slam. Plus, he's humorous:

EDIT: Oh, and this is an example of slam poetry in general. :D I've actually slammed before. I wasn't as good as any of these people though.
