Can you do it?!

WTF!? No way, thats like super impossible! I could never do that... but then again, I'm not a genius like these kids.

Hard to when they don't keep the camera on the screen!

I wouldn't be able to do it that fast.

This only confirms that Japanese people aren't human.

Finally someone who shares my ideologies. Sieg Heil!

I can do that with double digits, not triple digits.

:o

No, I could not do that.

So I looked up this anzan technique on wikipedia, but it didn't say much beyond "it's basically imagining an abacus in your head." Well that's fucking helpful. I'd be interested in reading up on it if it allows kids to add that fast, unless those two are prodigies or something.

I think the idea is that you start off using the abacus, and get so used to that, that one day you decide you don't need the abacus and do it from muscle memory?

I think a way to do it would be, if you have a good memory, to actually memorize all possible additions, somewhat like Allie says here.

It's how I do a lot of head calculations. I have a pretty good memory and if you've seen a lot of large number calculations, it becomes a something like: Hmmm, 563 times 146. Well, I know 553 times 145, so I'll just add 553 to that answer and 10*146.

It's a lot faster than actually doing all that in your head.

I know I couldn't do it at that speed at least.

How fast it would actually take me though, I haven't the faintest clue. I've become so used to using a calculator to solve stuff that it's retarded. I've taken plenty of higher level math classes, but that just made me use a calculator more, since it was about learning all the new problems and not how well you can add or the other basic functions.

I think you guys are missing the fact that not only are they adding this :bou::bou::bou::bou: up in their heads at such a speed, they're doing it while playing shiritori. :|

I can take derivatives in my head as long as they are not too complicated if that counts for anything. :p

Shiritori is fun. :D It's the easier task of the two.

I think we played that in french in Besançon. It might've been limited by country names or something x_X

It'd be fun to play shiritori in English, but there's really no way to win or lose aside from having time limits or whenever people decide they're bored of playing. :p

yeah, that was probably why we had a theme.

You people actually know wtf that is? :Oo:

Momiji

Yeah. It's a game where someone starts with a word, then someone says a word that starts with the last letter of that word, and continues until you can no longer do so. Basically, a word-chaining game. In Japanese, there are no words that start with the 'n' syllable, so if you can manage to end a word with it, you lose. Since we don't have that issue in English and many other languages, it's kind of hard to play. :P

NorthernChaosGod
05-11-2010, 06:32 PM
Wait, you lose if the other person can't say a word?

Momiji
05-11-2010, 07:54 PM
The goal is to keep the chain going! And no, you lose when you make it so the next person can't say a word, not that they can't come up with it on their own.

NorthernChaosGod
05-11-2010, 11:32 PM
Lol, that's what I meant. Man, that's a ridiculous game.

Momiji

Well, it's a cooperative game, not a competitive one. Then again, you could always tweak the rules!

The point is to not say a word that ends with n'. It's like being stuck with the Old Maid.

don't you get it

NorthernChaosGod

I get the premise, it's just dumb. It's like cross country, it's running for running's sake.

The game should have a logical conclusion that both people are actively trying to reach.
