View Full Version : Did you stick with the characters' 'default' roles?

I'm playing through FFXIII again and I'm thinking of mixing up the job roles a bit, for example making Snow a synergist instead of a ravager, etc.

Did you keep the "default" roles that were chosen for each character or did you use the other roles available to them after they all open up?

My roles worked like: Lightning: Sentinel/Commando Fang: Ravagar/Commando Sazh: Synergist/Saboteur

The only not-standard roles I actully used were Lightning as Sentinel, Fang as Ravager and practically everyone as Saboteur.

Using their non-standard roles is more expensive in terms of CP and you can easily get at least one of every role onto a team of three, making things like turning Lightning into a sentinel or a synergist a waste of points until you've mastered their main roles.

I'd say it's pretty pointless to give CP to non-standard roles before endgame.

spending a bit of fang's CP in synagist during game can be useful, she uses haste relatively early so offers a good quick buff at the start of battle. Thats about it. Post game I'm going to extra roles just for the stat boost rather than use them

I took Fang and specked into Ravager in C12 so I could get the first two abilities and be able to use Tri-Disaster. Other than that, no.

Anyway i kept them to their orginal roles.

I kept them to the original roles too. It's just easier. xD

I like all around characters, in all my Final Fantasys, so I decked all my characters out in all classes, and the ones with the highest HP were in my party.

Some characters cross specialize better than others. Lightning makes a pretty good Synergist for example. She learns everything but the Bar spells. Though its not until the 10th Crystarium level that she learns the ever important Haste. Fang learns it a bit sooner, though she only gets a more basic selection. Still, Fangs selection will work in a pinch, Haste, Protectra, Shellra, Bravera and Faithra.

Fang makes a really good Ravanger, learning all strike powers, all basic and mid level spells, and Waterga and Aeroga.

However, Lightning makes a lousy Sentinel. Vanille and Lil'Bitch... er, Hope, make subpar Commandos, so you'd only use them in those rolls in Paradigms that incorperate 3 of a kind.

Overall, it is well worth it to cross train characters in other roles, but it takes alot more time and effort. If you're like me and willing to put in that effort, go for it.

I think it's better to max out their default roles first, mostly because if you branch out you're paying triple the CP for a tenth of the boost. However one day I will COLLECT THEM ALL.

Yeah, I used everyone's default roles until the end of the game when I got everyone's role level to 5 for every role... At first it was so weird to have like, Fang as a Ravager or Lightning as a sentinel... so weird XD

I almost maxed out my default roles (I still havenīt done this yet even though I finished the story) and then put some CP in other roles which I still highly regret because of the amount of CP that I could have used to finally max out my characters default roles. :(

After maxing the entire crystarium on all characters, I noticed that some of the defaults were pretty bad and some of the side roles were pretty good. Fang as a Syn is awesome, because she's the only one to get -ra level of all the useful spells. I use her as a Syn when I need to kill Long Guis. Light as a Sab works really well, too, as well as a Syn. Making Fang a Rav is amazing, especially when I got her strength as high as it would go. Then, when I switch her back to Com, her attack hits like a truck. Sazh would make a good Sab, if he had more Strength/Magic. He has the lowest in both out of all characters... Then making Hope and Light Sens works well because they are the only ones who learn Evade, which is one of the most useful spells in the game. Primary roles should be maxed first, though, because they take far less CP to max, and provide 10x the stats. After that, though, start branching into the trees that they get really good spells for.

Unfortunately the game doesn't really encourage mixing around with the roles, there's a couple of cases where it's useful (such as Fang as a Rav and Syn, Light as Syn), but most of the time it's not cost-effective and it's rarely necessary

I would have had some fun with this such as allowing characters like Vanille, Hope, and Sazh to get some value out of attacking physically like a Commando throughout the course of the game, but there are no editing devices like Gameshark that would allow me to do so.

Default roles are the game's way of trying to force you to swap in particular characters for particular Paradigms. That bothers me, since I have my three favorites for regular party members: Lightning, Sazh, and Snow. It certainly helped that they got their Summons and extra action bars earliest. I like the paradigm Attrition but to use it everyone uses a secondary role, so I'm maxing out Sentinal for Sazh, Medic for Snow, and Saboteur for Lightning. It's pretty arduous, but I've already maxed out their default roles. Since I'm finally doing the subquests the CP is racking up.

I have yet to put him to use this way, but on my second play through I had Sazh learn Steelguard, Provoke, and Fringeward as a Sentinel. I noticed that endgame he had the highest base HP count, so it made sense.

Default roles throughout most of the game, and it's also a more efficient way of using the CP cos the accessories/atb slots are typically within the default roles. It makes less 'economic sense' to spread your CP thin especially when it's harder to obtain massive amounts in the earlier stages of the game. It was only after I maxed out my stage 9 crystarium and had a meagre 100k or so left of extra CP points that I let them venture into somewhere else. WHich really didn't get them very far except a few basic abilities.

Sure didn't--I thought Vanille was a great Sentinel. And I liked her sayings as a Sentinel as well lol.

It seemed hard to stray the path. I hated how you couldn't expand the game until after you beat it. I loaded the game after I beat it, and got bored in the first 5 minutes so I never leveled them after completing the game.
