Okay, so after playing this game, there are definitely some similarities.

Snow - Definitely a lot of Seifer in there. Not just the coat vibe, but the whole "I'm the hero in a story" thing going for him. And some Zell/Wakka.

Lightning - Ashe. Their character model even looks similar for some reason.

Hope - Reminds me a bit of Vaan and Larsa.

Vanille - A bit of Rikku and Penelo. Although a bit more like Rikku (sorry, I found Penelo the most pointless character in any game ever). And Cait Sith for some serious WTF moments (the sheep wool anybody).

Sazh - I can't think of anyone. But seriously cool.

Fang - Kimahri from a gameplay point of view. Also in the whole stoic thing. Perhaps a bit of Squall. And Vincent. But she's Australian which just makes her a lot more awesome and cheery about the whole thing.

Jihl - Naughty Quistis.

I'm sure more will come along later. Do you guys agree? Disagree? Who do you think is similar to previous characters? Or to anyone in the world? And don't you think Squenix should perhaps start getting some new characters. There does seem to be an awful lot of recycling going on.

This is off-topic, but I want to draw a comparison between XIII's setting and FFIII's (Yes, IIIj.)

Both involve worlds which hang over larger worlds... and, well that's all I've got. I just always thought FFIII's little backstory about the floating island and flooded planet was so neat, and XIII is a nice call-back to it.

The more I think about it, the more I think that XIII rivals IX for sheer amount of series references and recurring themes. One of the neat things I enjoyed about the datalog was going into it and finding new spins on the FF mythology that didn't necessarily fit into the narrative itself (for instance, fal'Cie Phoenix being a Long Sun of sorts for the people of Cocoon).

Sazh = Barret.

They're black, use guns and have kids. And both their wives died.

Lightning = Squall.

They're aloof, use gunblades and hate everyone.

Hope = Vaan

Seriously, even their voice actor sounds the same :confused:

P.S. This is all meant to be tongue-in-cheek, don't get all serious on me, Lightning. :redface:

Aside from Lightning (obligatory brooding character) and Vanille (obligatory cute character), I'm actually not sure I saw much similarity with older games. I mean, sure, if you really try then you can sort of go "Oh, they both are gung-ho, so..." but I found most of the characters to be rather unique. If I had to find something akin to older games, though, it would probably be...

Lightning: Cloud/Squall. Pretty easy for that one, really.
Snow: Irvine, with regards to his attitude. Just a bit more genuine.
Vanille: Rikku will do for her.
Sazh: Hard for me to pick one out, but I'm going with Barret for the fact that they're both fathers and spend the game "doing it for their kid", pretty much.
Fang: Hmm. Rebellious hard character. I don't know. Maybe Seifer, only in this instance Seifer remaind a good... girl.
Hope: Vaan, I guess.

Marlene isn't really Barret's kid actually, but still, Sazh's and Barret's attitude is similar.

Hope would be Tidus, I guess. He suddenly gets involved into some incident and everything he had ever known suddenly goes away and he has to deal with it.

Vanille... Selphie, I guess.

Hard to say for Lightning, but I suppose a bit of Cloud.

Snow, can only find Seifer.

Fang, don't really know. Someone who doesn't really care for the things the others fight for, but still tags along, mainly because of a friend.

Yeah, there were quite a lot of references. Fal'Cie obviously, weapons as well. Strangely, the game reminded me a lot of Vagrant Story and XII. Don't really understand why. I know one of the music tracks sounds identical to one from XII, but I don't actually know why I get that feel.

I think Sazh and Barrett share similar historical characteristics, but their personality and look are completely different.

Vanille is definitely that Rikku/Selphie type, but I think XIII actually made a little bit of fun of the stereotype. When her and Sazh were travelling together, you could almost see him sighing and getting irritated with her. Also there was another scene where the entire group basically say WTF. I found it to actually make her a more enjoyable character. And it was quite the juxtaposition having her narrate the game in a very mournful, sad manner when her in-game character is so bright and cheery.

Her in-game character was putting on a happy face but it was abundantly clear throughout that whenever people turned away, she tended to lose her smile and look a little down. I like that they made her far from one dimensional, her character had layers that made her very genuine.

that's the thing that i enjoyed the most about most of the characters, actually. none of them were very one-dimensional at all. vanille obviously being detailed already as being kind of the sad clown figure. the other one that i liked the most that you could really see the other side of more and more through the story was....

lightning = acts touch and callous but this only because she has an undying devotion and desire to protect the ones she holds close to her.
she feels she has a responsibility to serah to act this way so she can be better suited to take care of her (a lot of this is talked about in the prequel short stories as well)

also now that i think about it snow = acting like the hero who saves the day for everyone and believes it's true, but when it comes down to facing reality he's a person with a lot of guilt and pain on his shoulders. even though he believes in an optimistic outlook, the second harsh reality hits he's one of the characters that is the most radically affected by it

as far as similarities to other games' characters and actually staying on topic here...i think all the really obvious ones were already said :p

Haha! I picked up VIII again right after finishing XIII and I thought Quistis was a spitting image of Jihl.
By the way, it just me or did Gadot remind anyone else of Wakka?

Based on what I've seen so far:

Lightning - Cloud or Ashe.
Snow - Seifer, with a bit of Zell.
Sazh - Barret, I guess.
Hope - a less whiny version of Tidus. Yes, I mean it, less whiny. :p
Vanille - Rikku. Maybe a bit of Penelo.
Fang - I haven't used her much yet, but I'd say Paine, or maybe Auron.

Not really FF, but Hope reminds me of Roxas from KH. I even thought the voice actor (English) was the same for both characters.
