I like collies. I used to have a blue merle. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p32uCh5Nexg&feature=related) She was my buddy. I miss her.

(Not actually my dog in that video, but it still made me sad nontheless. I loved that dog.)

I adore Pomeranians.

http://blogs.riverfronttimes.com/dailyrft/pomeranian.jpg

When I was a little, we had a dog. He was a chow chow, which is basically like a Pomeranian, except huge and funnier looking.

http://www.petplanet.co.uk/petplanet/images/breeds/chow_rough.jpg

He was a sweet dog.

This is the only picture I could find of Snoopy, my old doggie! Snoopy used to wait for mom to turn around, then run and jump on her back! XD He was very playful!

The first picture is of my mother's first and only dog, Precious. I don't know how to spell the type of dog she is cuz it's fancy. Precious produced a liter of dogs and one of the turned out to be the spawn of Satan. On the bright side, she used to play hide and seek with my grandmother. :jess:

The second picture is of one of the dogs my dad and I got. His name is Lucky and he's a miniature Schnauzer. My mom had to put him in this cage for a little while because he tore up the couch and bit my then one year old sister. My dad later had to end up putting him up for adoption because he kept misbehaving, but he felt so bad that he went back the next day to retrieve him. It turns out, he had already been adopted the same day he was brought in! =o

Pictures of my current doggies are in my private album.

I have one of those named Bella. I wasn't a fan of little dogs 'til my mom brought her home. She's quite a character.

My dog is an Australian Shepherd Cocker Spaniel mix. I freaking love that dog. I've had her since I was nine.

This isn't her btw, but she looks like an older version of this dog. Older and fatter.

Looks like a Lhasa Apso. Or maybe a kyi-leo, which is a new breed that came about due to something accidentally breeding with a lhasa apso.

I had a wonderful yellow Lab. Her name was Sierra, sad story really. we had her around 12 years when her legs finally said enough and an infection was putting her in so much pain that she wouldn't eat. We chose to let her go peacefully and take her to the vet (euthenasia, or however you spell it) I then buried her in the rain. ;~; It was one of the saddest days of my life. I no longer have a dog now, I'm cat person these days.

It does, but I assumed that fancy referred to rare. I love those kinds of dogs. My girlfriend's kyi-leo, Ellie, is in my profile album. It's smurfing adorable.

Doggies are the best! They fill up your heart with happiness.

I have two Korean Jindos. They are crazy, affectionate, fierce, protective, and amazing.

They start off looking like these adorable little polar bear cubs.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3415/4601899491_02b0a6d4fc.jpg
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3341/4602513854_27160bf60d.jpg

And then grow up to looking like wolves.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v516/hannahgoesrawr/Livejournal/charlieliz2.jpg

They have insane prey drives since they were originally used as hunting dogs. My dogs have killed rats, birds, chickens, raccoons, squirrels, & cats (omg this made me so sad :(). They're known to be incredibly intelligent which also leads to them being escape artists. They can find their way out of most spaces, including locked crates. My dogs can scale 6 foot walls and have learned to climb trees so they can get out of the backyard. This is considered normal behavior for Jindos. They're a handful and so a lot of Jindos end up in pounds and shelters or just abandoned on the side of a street which is awful because Jindos are one of the most loyal and intelligent dogs you can ever have.

And now for a rant about dog food. The majority of the major dog food brands that are out there are very unhealthy for dogs. The ingredient list should give you a good idea of whether a particular brand of food is good or not. The first things you should see is some type of meat. If meat is further along the list, that means that there's less of it and more filler. Anytime you see meat "by product" or "meal" it's a bad thing. By product is any leftover bits of an animal that is rejected for human consumption such as feet, neck, intestines, etc. Corn being high on the ingredients list is bad too since its unnatural for dogs to eat corn and they get very little benefit from it. It's basically filler. Pedigree, Iams, Science Diet, Purina, all these dog food brands and more have very low quality ingredients in their dog food. Some brands that I would recommend: Honest Kitchen, Wellness Core (this is what I feed my dogs), & Innova. You can check out Dog Food Analysis - Reviews of kibble (http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com) for more info. A raw food diet is supposed to be the most natural for dogs, but it does take quite a bit more effort than feeding them commercially packaged foods. It's something of a mini-crusade for me - trying to get people to feed their dogs better quality stuff so that dogs can be happy & healthy. Also, here's a little info on foods that could be harmful to your dog. DOG TRICKS, TIPS AND INSIGHTS, Foods that are Harmful or Fatal to Dogs. (http://lacetoleather.com/fataltodogs.html) Most people know about things like chocolate, but there's some surprising things on the list.

Hey, Miriel...

I knew about the bad ingredients in dog food, but I didn't know that Science Diet was a poor dog food. When I read your post I checked the ingredients in our current bag, and it does have by-products and corn! I had never checked before now because our veterinarian recommended it, and his office is the only place my parents and I can buy it around here as far as we know.

It was so hard to find a dog food that Tiki and Tobi would eat, too. :kaocry2:

I guess I'll try the dog food my groomer sells again. It wasn't bad at all.

I started my dogs off on Science Diet too cause my Vets recommended it. But after doing a bit of research, it turns out that Science Diet heavily promotes their brand via animal hospitals by signing contract deals. Science Diet gets super amazing promotion while the Vets get extra money. It's kinda win win for both. But I think it's a dishonest practice. Your pets doctors should be advocating the best possible dog food brand, not the one that makes them the most money. Science Diet is better than other dog food brands like Pedigree, but definitely not as good as products like Honest Kitchen, Wellness or Innova.

Doggies need to be two things:

1) look like wolves - so no chihuahuas or pugs; I also don't feel fondness for bulldogs either.

2) Big enough to throw, but not small enough to get hurt when I throw them. So no small dogs, and dogs that are heavier than I am (wat)...they're awesome but not fun to play with. So I don't like great danes either =(

I like throwing dogs around ^_^

I didn't know about avacados! I know those are fatal to our pet bird, but I didn't think it was bad for dogs.

My parents are so bad about what they feed our pets. The bird gets fed pizza crusts, french fries, potato chips, mashed potatoes as treats if we've had that for dinner, among other things. I've tried to warn them that he's not a child and can't eat human food, but they don't listen.

Right now I can hear him begging for a cookie. I really hate the bird, but I wouldn't feed him bad stuff. It's not his fault that he's noisy and evil. He needs nuts for treats, not fatty foods.

There are so many things a dog shouldn't eat that it's hard to remember most of them.

Ever since I read that Xylitol is deadly to doggies (it's a sugar replacement in gum), I've been too scared to buy and bring home anything that contains it. You never know what could happen. XD

fire_of_avalon
05-30-2010, 02:44 AM
A good friend of mine had quite a bad scare regarding Xylitol once. Her dog, a 4 lb. Yorkie called Baxter, ate quite a bit of her roommate's sugar free gum while my friend was away on a trip. Essentially a dogs pancreas begins making mega-insulin to combat what it regards as a sugar spike. For about a week they thought Baxter wouldn't make it, but he pulled through!

We feed out dogs with the most natural food available to us (we use the Lassie natural something something. I forget what it's called) and also supplement meats and some vegetables when the dogs will eat them.

Someday I will post pictures of my dogs.
