So I started this game last night, and I like it so far, but as my brother was headed to bed he like started staring at the tv and was like 'OMG THAT IS ONE HOT GIRL' and he was staring at Yuj, who is obviously a boy from his voice. Even if he has girly hair. So I was like 'SHANE, THAT IS A BOY, HAHAH, YOU LIKE BOYS' which of course made my brother mad but ohwell.

Topic: Did you notice how the girly some of the guys looked in this game? And what's up with the names? Lightning and Serah are sisters, right, so why are their names so drastically different? I mean, Serah and Lightning? Bit like, completely different there. Also, Snow, Hope? Come on. Not to mention I felt like FFXIII went a bit french with the l'Cie, fal'Cie, Gadot, Lebreau. <- All frenchish looking words to me. :")

Not really. FFXIII was good about that compared to the rest of the series! Well Yuj stood out like a sore thumb looking like one of those weird dressing J-Rock bands. Other than him, there was Hope and Maqui, but they're young enough to get away with it. Besides, if you were told they were female, wouldn't you say something about how they looked like boys? Though Hope is a girl's name. Lightning isn't her given name, as you find out relatively early! Or not long after her name was announced for those who were excited enough to keep up with the news. I won't spoil you on what her real name is, but it's pretty and compliments the name Serah pretty well.

A lot of these names probably don't seem as ridiculous to Japan. Then they get translated here and it's like "huh that is a really pretentious name." Like all kinds of anime characters are named after food (Ichigo is a strawberry?), but I think that may be how their language works or something. I don't know a lick of Japanese, so don't take my word for it.

Square always makes androgynous male characters. They're in to effeminate looking men over there for whatever reason, but this game seemed have more masculine looking male leading characters like Gadot with his absurdly thick neck.

I think the names are better in FFXIII than they have been in other recent FFs. wth is a Nooj? And how awful is Ffamran Mied Bunansa?

Yes, Balthier definitely wins the worst (real) name competition!

If I'm honest although I know Hope is a girls name IRL it didn't strike me until you just said it. And JRPG's always have effeminate male characters, I don't notice it any more, probs because a lot of my male friends are a bit like it! lol

Final fantasy males are usually quite feminine, with a few exceptions. Hope is feminine sounding, and lightning sounds masculine. Oh well =)

Even Balthier himself was ashamed of it.
