They don't really work with existing technology. The folding points would create natural structural weak points which would be a problem with something you're using to hit heavily armored targets with all your strength. Then again, I could be wrong, technology is always advancing. I'm certainly open to the idea that we will someday see something like Sulu's sword from the Star Trek reboot. The Cocoon tech if certainly more advanced than the real world's.

What is a foldable weapon?

Examples,please.

Lightning's gunblades, Vanille's wand thingies and little bitch.., er, Hope's boomerangs all folded up. The primary problem which I addressed above would only apply with Lightning's, since she's a heavy melee character.

I've actually seen a real foldable weapon, a spetum in the Higgins Armory. As previously mentioned, this creates a weak point that breaks easily in the worst possible place. Most likely this was used only for ceremonial purposes.

Considering that characters in the FF series have always been able to lug around huge weapons and inventory without any visible effects, they're at least trying to explain how they can do that.

It's simple, they have a bag of holding. :p
