Try and stay at a low level. It's the ideal way to play the game, but it will require you to play a lot of Triple Triad and use Card on a lot of a monsters to get good magic for your junctions. You'll end boss fights in 3-4 hits and you'll only be around Level 12. xD

The most important thing is to junction purposefully. Experiment around to see what junctions work best for your play style. That requires getting a lot of AP for your GF's from enemies. A properly junctioned party is almost invincible.

Drawing is necessary to get many GF's, so always try drawing from bosses. You can get around drawing if you use Card and Refine abilities, but getting a diverse spellset is a prerequisite for good junctions.

Triple Triad is not necessary to win the game, but you can refine the cards into all sort of goodies. The rare cards give you better stuff. Try to eliminate whatever rule you hate the most: for me its Random. Talk to card players in two different regions and the second will use rules from both and then ask to drop one.

You Gil is based on regular paychecks based on SeeD rank, not as loot from enemies, so the game tends to raise your rank when you do things correctly. If you wander off from mission objectives your rank tends to suffer. Try to raise your rank by testing in the early parts of the game, and money will never be a problem.

There are a lot of subquests. Unless you're lucky or use a guide, you'll miss a few the first time through. They aren't integral to the plot of course, but some of the best GFs and stuff can only be acquired by doing them.
