I know lol it's liek when I was 16 it was all :) and :( and I think some people even did :D but that was:cool::cool::cool::cool: pretty hard:greenie::roll2;) core but then i learned how to '][''/[]D3 |_;|< 3 [)|$ so den:confused::confused::confused::confused::confused: I was so cool y'know? 1990s was so awesom^ ^:eep:_^

I guess the deciding factor in my mind is "can something that is not an image necessarily be an 'icon?"

but I always get it backwards and call graphical smileys and text emoticons anyway. lol!

Emoticon and smiley are interchangeable to me if you're talking about graphical and/or text versions. Emoticon is the proper term, though.

A smiley is technically just :), but can refer to any emoticons as well.

It depends on whether you think the word is:
emot icon (Emotion icon) which is a picture to represent an emotion :)
or
emoti con (emotic convention) which is a convention generally accepted as representations of emotions, such as by text : )

I personally thought it was the second one before I read what people kept saying about icons
