View Full Version : Should we think of a new name for "throws" in fighting games?

A "throw" is the name given to the attacks used when you grab and attack your oponent in a fighting game. It is usually done by pressing two buttons at once.

However, although a selct few of these attacks involve actual throwing, not all of them do - in fact most of them involve you grabing your oponent for a split second, then letting go, and then kicking them or stabbing them. So should we think of a new name for them?

I tried calling them "Close Attacks", but that didn't work as; 97% of fighting game attacks are "close" to your oponent (sometimes a character gets a long range attack, to a bit more unfair.)

I use 'Grab' pretty interchangeably with Throw. Still, kind of a weird thing to want to change. I think most characters in most fighting games actually do perform some kind of 'Throw' with at least one of their throw variants.

Wrestling games call them Grapple moves, because the 'position' of holding someone (before you hit them or throw them or whatever) is called the Grapple position.

I always describe Hakan's throws as hugs when playing ssfiv :D

Yeah I'm with Trix on it's a strange thing to want to change, but I too call them grabs.

The only game where I called them throws was Street Fighter II, because for the most part they were over-the-shoulder tosses!

I call them tosses or grabs and the ones where you grab them and smack them into the ground I call slams, but im not really into fighting games enough to care.

I prefer to call them grabs.

It doesn't really matter what you call them as long as you don't call them 'cheating'. Grabs aren't cheap. People should learn how to break them instead of having a cry.

I call them grapples. Fun to take advantage off and few people try or even know how to break out of, even if it's not that hard in most games.

Yeah, they're pretty easy to break on games like Tekken and the "Soul" games (both of which are made by the same company).

I call stuff like Blanka's headbite a grab, but even then Throw is still a better term...as long as people understand. I also don't see how long range fighting is unfair...

That being said Hakan is awesome, you all are haters. He is hilarious!

"Throw" is fine with me. However, in Danish I've always heard it as "tag fat trick", which directly translated means something along the lines of "grab trick".

So, I suppose I'm ambivalent.

I don't really care enough to not call them "Throws".

Throw or grab is fine.

Never ever called them a throw before. I think this is actually the first time I've ever seen them called throws. Grab is what I know and seems to fit the description well enough.

No need to change the name. The second most common thing they're called are grabs.

Uh, that has no relevance to this thread.
