View Full Version : So... did the "N" actually stand for anything?

In the earlier translations "The Cleft Of Dimensions" was changed to "The N-Zone", presumably to avoid childish jokes around the word "Cleft" like how "Butz" was changed to "Bartz" (they thought we'd think it looks to much like "Butts" all though apparently it isn't pronounced that way).

But I wonder, did the translators actually have a meaning for the "N"? I personally think it could mean "Negative", but I don't know for sure...

I always thought it was "Negative" myself, seeing how the zone is filled with evil & darkness.

It's the Nice Zone because nothing bad ever happens there.

Playing through the game in Japanese, Exdeath talks about witnessing the power of "無" which means nothing, so it makes sense that N would stand for nothing.

No Zone.

He's right.

The cleft of dimensions really was a space between dimensions, so it really didn't exist except for a small space, so it technically stood for no zone. This was later confirmed by Ted Woolsey in his compendium of Final Fantasy translations.

It's a zone made specifically for Africans.
