My school is now like a prison. We can barely wear anything apart from school uniform, no braclets, no necklaces . Ipods are banned, phones are banned from the school premisis. Shirts tucked in, ties down to the waist. Girls wear pleated skirts, no makeup. We all have to wear a badge on our blazers saying what form we're in (i see no point in that) and we have to wear gray socks. It never used to be like this though =(

Anyway, is there anything we can do, the students?

Also, what was your school like on this kinda stuff?

Wow, that's fairly messed up!

I went to public school, so I didn't have that issue. The dress code was very lax. Nothing was really banned from school - you weren't allowed to text, and you technically could have your phone taken away for the day, but I knew no teachers that actually did this.

I knew one time though, a girl had a belt that had decorative bullet shells on it and she actually had it taken from her because they said it was a weapon. XD

My school is pretty annoying for stuff like that, but I'm in Sixth Form now so it doesn't affect me as I can pretty much wear what I like.

The only jewellery we were allowed to wear were earrings but only studs, and bracelets, no other piercings were allowed and I had a lot of friends who had all these different ones. They're really strict on hair colour, it has to be natural colours, so no bright reds or anything like that. Oh and you had to have your shirt tucked in and tie done up properly at all times. Mobile phones aren't allowed in school and neither are Ipods and such like, though it's fine for Sixth Formers when we're in our common room.

I'm so glad I never have to be bothered with that again.

That sounds very similar to my high school. In the last few years, they built fences all around us with a turn-stile which only pupils who lived incredibly close to the school could get through during the day, and that was with the agreement that they were to go straight home and not the shops or chippy. They had people in the village who'd grass on any students who ventured there.

We weren't allowed makeup, jewelery, nail polish, the list goes on. Our school ties had to be 5 stripes long and our skirts had to be below the knee. Oh and we weren't allowed to take off our blazers without a teacher's permission.

Ipods were only allowed at break or lunch. Phones were not allowed at all.

It was really strict!

Unless this was moved, this is in GC, not EoEO. Mockery should be celebrated.

When I was in sixth grade, we weren't allowed to wear t-shirts or shorts, and our clothes had to be tucked in. From seventh to twelfth grade, there were very little restrictions on our dress. I believe since I graduated in 2006, they've instituted some kind of uniform standards.

This isn't EoEO, fatty. Are you wearing your reading glasses?

Regardless, the exclusive mocking is just annoying. Who are you to say what should and should not be cared about? I also notice Manus only mentioned two of the more minor rules as representative of the whole. Also, MILF beat you to it.

These sort of mindless school rules really bug me. I'm not sure how old you are, but how can we expect such kids to function as adults when they're treated like fungible automatons for 18 years? And who the hell requires girls to wear skirts? That seems hopelessly outdated and enforcing arbitrary gender roles. Unfortunately, there's probably nothing you can do, unless you want to protest the school directly. Maybe if enough students kick up enough of a fuss (cause the distraction the school is trying to prevent with stringent rules), they'll pay attention.

Boys don't like mudkips.

P.S. Your school is like prison in the same way that getting your teeth clean is like being buttrape. Quit your whining about how "unfair" it is and focus on your education. Schools that make you wear uniforms now also make it less likely that you'll have the kind of job where you have to wear a uniform as an adult.

No MAKEUP? I'm sure flashy fingernail polish isn't allowed either! That's ridiculous.

I kindof wished we were provided uniforms in school, though not to such strict standards as the ones that have been listed.

We didn't have much of a dress code - no midriff shirts, no short shorts. That's about it.

Correlation does not equal causation. :p The quality of education at private schools which would have such rules is not determined by those rules.

The merits of dress codes can definitely be debated (further argument against such outright dismissals of complaints), but there's absolutely nothing wrong or unusual with resenting being subjected to arbitrary rules.

It's pretty darn hard to learn about a subject when a teacher takes about ten minutes of the lesson shouting at students to improve on their uniforms. They even have uniform checks in classes, disturbing our work for a good coupla minutes babbleing on how we're the face of the school. I get some of them, yeah it's looks smart. But it's just ridiculous now.

Oh and it's year 11, last year at the school. So after this year is over it's collage etc.

I hated that kind of talk when I was in school. I dont know many people who build their opinion on an entire school depending on how long their tie is, and I dont want to know anyone who does since theyre obviously shallow and judgemental.

Teachers would never go for my "its whats on the inside that counts" arguement.

ROFL.

Actually, I recall that my HS didn't allow strapless dresses or tops. I tended to ignore this rule since I wore a lot of strapless dresses when I was younger. They were always tasteful and didn't show cleavage, so I didn't get the problem, but one of my teachers always scolded me. None of my others did though. I guess when you're the nice participatory girl who gets As and just reads in class, teachers don't feel the need to scold.

All schools are institutional. I think it's good phones are banned because of the amount of kids texting whilst class was going on was ridiculous. I've been to a school where we had to wear uniforms and while this does eat in to people's identity's, individualism, and freedom, it does have pros. They sometimes enforce that in bad areas where people get their clothes stolen. I was in a good area and we still got clothes stolen. If you even left a shirt out during gym, it would be gone within two minutes. It was ridiculous, so I really don't think uniforms in school is entirely bad, but I would see why it would be upsetting to someone who was used it being another way.

Pre-K and Kindergarten I went to some ghetto private school in the hood. We had to wear uniforms. No clothes or jewelry got stolen. Then in high school and middle school there was the whole no uniforms thing BUT there was a dress code where the girls couldn't wear straps. I also ignored that rule and wore my spaghetti strap tops when it was hot out because there was no AC in the hallways f that. Do what I want. ~ Cartman I guess what I'm trying to say is that you really have a problem with it boycott it. Don't wear it. If more people boycott, they can't really kick the whole school out over some silly clothes thing, so there you go.

I use to attend private elementary before I enrolled in public HS.... I kinda liked being in uniform..It certainly lessened the stress of having to cycle through a clothing.

But I would keep my individuality in regards to my hair style and what not..

My school has a focus on embracing individuality and diversity, which is why we're one of the four high schools in NZ without uniform at any year level. I can't imagine it any other way and if they were to introduce rules that would 'stifle our freedom', I would make a lot of noise. I'm Head Boy of my school and if I go mad with power in the last few months of the year, I intend to push for compulsory tribal headdresses! :D

My high school prided itself on it's reputation as one of the top schools in the country. It wasn't a private school, but you wouldn't know it looking in from the outside. We had the whole gray socks, black shoes, shirts tucked in, top button button-ed and tie done to the top policy. In assemblies, the headmaster, deputies, captains and prefects donned black gowns and entered the hall flanked by giant blue and brown banners.

Seriously, the top button thing pisses me off to this day.

Girls having to wear skirts is so horribly outdated and sexist.

I went to a small public school, and everyone wore jeans and t-shirts. No one was particularly interesting. We had three punks in the entire school who wore mohawks and chains and that was the ending of the vaguely different.

My middle school was very strict on their dress code. It was that horribly ugly polo shirts only tucked into jeans with an ugly belt dress code. Everyone looked ugly, unless you happened to be one of the girls who had already grown boobs. They'd purposely wear the see-through white polo shirts with neon pink bras like "look at me I grew boobs I am a big girl now!" You couldn't have anything that wasn't school supplies or something absolutely necessary. They took away my silly putty and sticky notes :(

High school was nice. The dress code was lax, just don't show off too much skin and don't wear clothes saying BITCHES AND WHORES. The only thing I really found unfair was their weirdness about guys having long hair. They got a little weird during my senior year though. You couldn't have anything that could at all be considered a weapon on your shirt and a guy in my class got in trouble for having a picture of hedge clippers. The rules allowed for cellphones, but they were to be taken up if they were seen before the final bell, and you'd have to pay $15 to get it back. Other electronics were prohibited but most teachers didn't care if you used them, as long as they weren't lecturing. Just the cellphones were a big deal. I think all of the teachers got an email on the last month of my senior year because after four years of using my iPod without anyone saying anything to me I was suddenly stopped by every teacher I walked past in the halls!

As far as I know there is no such thing as school uniforms here in Denmark - well maybe at some really prestigious private schools or something, but who cares about those anyway. All the schools I've gone to you could wear whatever you wanted to - the only thing I can think of is that you'd sometimes be asked to take your hat/cap off if you were wearing one of those in high school classes. But again, that was not because of some rules the school had, but rather the personal preference of the teacher teaching that class.

The school I went to till the sixth grade was very strict with their uniform rules. Even our hair ties and hair bands had to be white or black. If we came to school with long nails, they'd send us to the school nurse and have her cut them for us. I remember being told that one of the generations after me had dyed hair (dunno why anyone 10 years old or under would have dyed hair anyway...but to each their own) and were told, "you must come back with your natural hair colour tomorrow", it just sounds funny to me, almost like "make your parents sign this document".

The school I went to after that didn't care about much, even though it had a uniform.

The high school I went to had crazy rules, too. I remember being told off for wearing blue socks  people were also weren't allowed to wear hair gel / spike their hair up.

High school should be a little bit like University except mandatory attendance until you are 18. The Province forces attendance until 16 y/o I think. As for uniforms, it is part of some schools (religious, private) and part of the school rules. You go to the school (or your parents make you go there), you wear the uniform as defined.

back to 'like university', things like phones should not be used in class, but during breaks and lunch periods, why not? I don't see how anybody would ban its use for recreation.

Well I think its just the school doesnt want to be responsible for lost or stolen property so they ban phones outright and if yours gets stolen (which apparently happens a lot) they can say "you weren't supposed to have it in the first place" rather than having to investigate theft in the school.

Let's talk about our dress code at HS!

For mine we had to wear black slacks with a white shirt. No tie, but we could wear either a vest or cardigan on top during winter (which was blue in color). And socks had to be black. With black dress shoes/boots. I don't know if I could wear a tie with my shirt but if I had to go back to that school (and relive a decade of bad dreams where I was going back to high school because I still need to graduate for some reason), I would probably see if I can wear a tie.

I think you had to tuck in your shirt, and if you've seen kids , they do not want to do that. Ugh.

Also after a few years they started to care about how high the kilts were that girls wore. =(

No dress code at my high school. I mean, at all. I've seen girls bare their midriffs and wear booty shorts and not get called out for it. I've seen guys with hair longer than mine (that's saying something, at the length it is now) and girls with pink hair. And people with piercings all over. Yeah. It's all cool with my school, though. I think I got off easy compared to most of you.
In my old Catholic school, the girls had to wear jumpers when we were little and then polo shirts and kilts when we were older. Of course we had to have our shirts tucked in, no dark nail polish, wear belts if you wore pants, blah blah blah. But I left my shirt untucked for half of seventh grade and all of eighth grade and no one really noticed. I also rolled my skirt up a lot because it was so long and it looked awful. But nope, I never got in trouble for that, either. :P
