AND WHY IS IT HERE?

The catalyst control centre is not supported by the driver version of your enabled graphics adapter. Please update your ATI graphics driver, or enable your ATI adapter using the displays manager.

I have no idea what ATI is, and no idea how to get rid of this bloody thing.

ATI is the manufacturer of your video/graphics card in your computer.

Do what it says and update the drivers :D Do people actually read error messages these days? :p

Ok, it might not be that straightforward, but updating drivers is usually a good place to start :p

ATI is a manufacturer of graphics hardware for your computer, and Catalyst is a package containing the drivers for the hardware and some monitoring and configuration software. That error message is just telling you that you need to upgrade your graphics drivers.

1. Click Start > Run, type "dxdiag" into the box (just use the box at the bottom of the start menu if you're using Vista/7) and press enter.
2. Go to the display tab and note down the chip type.
3. Go to the AMD website and select your graphics card model from the drop-down menus.
4. Download and install drivers and restart.

Of course, this is all assuming you have an ATI graphics card. If you don't then I advise not installing the drivers. :p
