We have fleas in the spare room. We are clean people! How can this be? Fleas are gross as heck and I feel super itchy right now!

My housemate told me to walk into the spare room and within seconds I had 3 crawling up my yams!!!! I need my yams. How do I fix this? What are your flea opinions/experiences? Welcome to the flea thread for 2010!

Fleas are pretty easy to get rid of. You don't have to use fire, even.

Your only solution is to destroy your living quarters. Preferably in a loud and attention getting manner.

I suggest contacting the military.

Fleas are the least of my problems at the moment, with all of the damn mosquitos and other-worldly insects buzzing about.

When I got lola, she had a million fleas. I used a combination of flea collar + flea comb, and that didn't really help. I could pick 8 off of her at any given time. Vet gave me some flea stuff to put on the back of her neck once a month for three months (it wasn't frontline, but I don't recall the name) and she has been mostly flea-free! even though she lived outside all summer :)

Nasty.... You should get some carpet cleaning shampoo or something and wear some Haz Mat suit before you enter and clean that place!!

And I wouldn't want the other Flea in my room either! X_X

What.

No. Fleas are god damn HARD to get rid of. We had to do a cycle of flea bombing, vacuuming, steam cleaning the carpets, applying chemical powders to all the floor surfaces, and washing every single piece of fabric that the fleas could have embedded eggs into. It is nearly impossible to kill flea eggs.

It took a solid week of hard work to get rid of the fleas.

Getting rid of fleas on your pets is much easier. A nice soapy bath, followed by flea medication and you're set. Fleas inside a carpet floored home is disaster though. I got rid of fleas in my parent's wood floored house in like a day though.

Having fleas was literally one of the worst times in my life. I'm allergic to their bites so I was swollen up like crazy. I would go to bed wearing two pairs socks, leggings, pants, and a sweater with the hood pulled over my face and still wake up with bites. I was ready to move out and into a hotel. It was a smurfing nightmare.

We never had problem dealing with fleas. Just vacuum and stay out of the room for a week. They need to eat regularly.

That, and frontline for your pets. It's very awesome.

It's not even my cat. I'm going to let them deal with it.

My solution is basically kill it with fire and they wont let me do that so what else can they expect of me??

Buy a stink bomb. I'm sure it'll work better than any fire anyway.

Where's the fun in that?

I've never had fleas before. Our pets were always indoor pets, plus the fact that my family is neurotically clean to the point of possible OCD. I'm kind of scared of the idea of fleas.

Ditto. Those little things look freakin' evil. :Oo:

We've never had trouble getting rid of fleas. Just chemwarfare the cats and the fleas will be dead and gone real soon. Unless you're Miriel and live somewhere where fleas are apparently immune to such things or smart enough not to bite poisoned cats.

This year was the first year we have had a problem with them. I swear they are like super fleas! Like Miriel, we had to flea bomb, steam clean the carpets, powders, all that stuff! It was so hard to get rid of them! Horrible time. HORRIBLE.

Don't fleas actually like clean animals/people more? That's what I've been told anyway.

I, for one, do not get fleas.

It's not a matter of opinion, flea eggs are incredibly hard to kill. It's just a fact: Flea Egg: Control, Description of Flea Eggs (http://www.pestproducts.com/flea-egg.htm)

They're immune to a lot of traditional ways of getting rid adult fleas. There's no known chemical that can penetrate a flea egg's cocoon. You can get rid of live fleas easily enough. Simply vacating a place for a week can kill them. But if you REALLY want to get rid of fleas completely, you have to kill all the lives ones, then wait for the eggs to hatch and get rid of THOSE before they have a chance to lay eggs of their own.

Y'all don't even know the amount of flea research I've done. Read freakin' books about it. Know thy enemy.

Also, using pets as a poison dispenser wasn't an option for us. It's not like we could spray frontline on ourselves and wait for the fleas to hatch, develop into adults, bite us, and die.

That's pretty insane that it got to that point to begin with, though. We lived in a carpeted house with four humans and four free-roaming pets and never had that bad an infestation.
