Well if you care about the story, it's hard to play the second without going through the first since the story is pretty complex.
On the other hand, the second one has more characters with dlc characters slowly trickling in, and it has more modes and most likely more of an online following.
You can just read the story for the first on wikipedia or something and get the second,lol.
