View Full Version : Why is Vanille Hated for Her Australian Accent?

I can understand if some people find her childish (and sometimes nonsense) mannerisms annoying but some just despise her Australian accent.

I just can't help but think it's quite racist. Not that I'm accusing anyone of being racist but I'm simply expressing my opinions on this matter. Fang on the other hand also speaks in an Australian accent but no one seems to pinpoint that.

To express more of my opinions, I'm glad Square is incorporating more and more nationalities through accents such as Cait Sith's Scottish accent and the British-accented majority of FFXII's cast.

It's not racist because australian isn't a goddamn race.

And her accent is the least of her problems.

Pretty much what Mirage said. I can't think of a single time I've seen someone say they hate her for her accent (or even mind the accent), especially with plenty of other very valid reasons to hate her.

I quite liked Vanille's voice. And I can certainly see why people hate her, though I found her tolerable.

i loved Vanille and really don't get the hate directed at the character at all... but, i also loved Yuffie, Selphie, & Rikku, which i believe Vanille is another iteration of... also loved Vanille's accent, varrying accents give the impression that everyone is not from the same hometown, village, city, ect...

She's fine outside battle mostly, it's just the constant moaning when she does anything in battle that gets on my nerves.

Her voice only sometimes sounded Australian to me. Sometimes it sounded French... sometimes Spanish, Brooklyn even... Instability!

The only thing about Vanille that bothers me ever is the weird orgasm sounds she makes when she's in battle. It's not really a big deal though. I've grown to tolerate this, because this seems to be a problem with pretty much every game with a female in it. If I let it bother me too much my selection of games would be very narrow.

Her accent bothered me a little when I heard the first trailer with her voice in it, but once I heard some sensible dialogue I found it to be endearing.

Even though i hated her most of all. I ended up using her in my main party because she had more HP than hope as a healer....so yes, i had to go thru the stupid moans and corny dialogue with her! But it wasn't the accent that puts her off.

I have issue with the way she runs. And her weird squeals during battle don't help at all. In fact the most redeeming feature about her is actually the accent, for me.

She runs just like FFX-2 Yuna. I think it's adorable. Sometimes my friends and I like to run like Yuna :3

No one who runs for kilometers on end, like the cast of any FF game, runs like that. Having been around athletes my entire life character animations like that really grate on me.

Nobody runs like that ever, athlete or not xD

The game was running on the PS2 based on FFX-2 engine.

FFXIII started development before FFX-2 was even out, and was originally intended for the PS2, if that's what you're referring to

My problem with Vanille's accent is the inconsistency. Sometimes it's not quite Australian, and it really throws me off. Fang's is perfectly fine because it's consistent throughout. As others have mentioned, there are much better reasons to hate her regardless of the accident.

I'm indifferent towards the accent, the pitch at which she retains it however...

I have only little idea of what the Australian accent should sound like and judging from what Ouch! said, Fang is consistent compared to her.

It's just that I've read from many other gaming forums and YouTube comments that go "I hate Vanille because of her Australian accent which I can barely understand," or "Her annoying Australian accent really puts me off."

But so long as I have no trouble understanding her even without subtitles, I'm fine with her. Well, except for her battle squeals I guess.

Yeah, and some people just complain about everything...XD
But i totally agree with you, and i understand her just fine and i sort of like her accent :jess:

Agreed completely. Her continuously getting off in battle was a bit much.

Hahaha yeah, this was one game that people were absolutely determined to hate from the start. Look at this article from long before the game's release!

Final Fantasy XIII graphics EXACTLY the same as Tomb Raider- Destructoid (http://www.destructoid.com/final-fantasy-xiii-graphics-exactly-the-same-as-tomb-raider-129492.phtml)

Though that article in particular may be satirical. I really really hope it's satirical :|

I'm an Ozzie and I hate her voice, so I signed up just for you

It's not that the accent is Australian (Fang's is fine), it's that it's awful - akin to Dick van Dyke's 'mockney' in Mary Poppins

Or it may not be the actual accent - rather the annoyingly peppy and high-pitched tone (squeal) she speaks it in, but regardless it makes it sound like an awful Ozzie accent

Now that I think of it, the Australian accent is usually quite deep (like Fang's) - such a high pitch may just be wrong on anyone over the age of 5

it's funny because in the English version the voice actor for Vanille is Australian while the voice actor for Fang is from the USA xD and in my opinion i think Fang's accent sounds better

I knew Vanille's VA was Australian, but I did not know that Fang's wasn't xD

I hated pretty much everything about Vanille. Her Orstraylian accent is just the cherry on the turd cake.

Never cared much for Genki Girl types anyway, like Selphie, Yuffie, or Rikku. Something about the combination of girlish glee with boundless energy that I don't find appealing at all. At least usually they are counterbalanced by more serious characters. Vanille somehow manages to out-Genki FFX-2 Rikku, which I didn't even think was possible.

Vanille is actually the reason I didn't bother looking into this game. I started downloading trailers and cut-scenes to get a taste for things before committing. And had heard complaints regarding the voice acting in general, and usually hers specifically. So I got a few scenes with her. And good lord she grates my nerves. I wonder if its much better in Japanese. I think like BG I'm just no into those types of girls. But her especially.. Which is sad, 'cause her character design had such promise before they put a voice and personality to it...

It's way too forced and stereotypical (not that it even hits the stereotype on the head). I like Vanille but her accent just.. it felt like there was someone sitting there mocking me the whole time. Like when someone tries to imitate an accent badly just to piss you off. But perhaps due to its inconsistencies I could tolerate it sometimes :P

Also I was amused by the thread title in the url: Why Vanille hated her Australian accent. Some kind of tell-all tabloid news story.

This ^^

Her accent never really bothered me but I have a high tolerance for quirky voices and bad accents but maybe its because I watch so many B movies. Frankly, I felt the VA work in XIII was actually pretty good, it was the dialogue that makes some of the scenes cringe worthy.

In regard to Vanille, her accent is probably one of her better traits as everything else about her is annoying or facepalm inducing. She's joined Yuffie and Yuna in my list of worst FF characters. :p

I wonder if anyone actually realizes that the actress IS an Aussie. She ain't faking the accent.

Considering it was said earlier in the thread, I would imagine lots of people realize that.

She's still annoying though.

Ah, the "perky, young girl" archetype of Square-Enix. I didn't mind the previous ones such as Relm, Eiko and Rikku. Vanille quite bothered me since she's 19, the oldest of the series' archetypes. Yet despite her age, she acts much more childish than Eiko who is only 6 years old.

And I was very much surprised to find out Fang had a more consistent accent thanks to her American VA as opposed to Vanille's inconsistent one made by her Aussie VA. Such irony.

What was so jarring for me at first about Vanille was how she pushed Hope at the beginning chapter and thinking it rather rude, and then she's suddenly hugging him as if he's her long lost brother. Maybe it's just me but I'm really not very fond of people being too touchy feely around strangers. That kind of discomfort further increased when she started being all trying-too-hard-perky, not to mention her weird looking weapon. It all struck me as kinda off key, even worse that I couldn't quite put a finger on it until I took the time to analyse it. (Was bored, forgive me).

Much of this is also attributed to her VA. I've seen some videos on the Japanese version and she isn't nearly as annoying. I guess it's the tone of voice and not her accent that grates.

I find the Australian accent horrible in general, and I'm Australian :p Obviously it doesn't bother me in every day life, but when contrasted in movies and games with American accents it sounds godawful. I would like a foreign opinion on Australian accents as a whole though (and not just this apparently perky and annoying girl's accent); I often feel like Australia in general is a joke to the rest of the world :p

P.S. I realise this thread is oldish, but I'm only looking into buying FFXIII now, so I stumbled across it
