RPGFan News - Now On Virtual Console: Final Fantasy Mystic Quest (http://www.rpgfan.com/news/2010/568.html)

You might remember Final Fantasy Mystic Quest from the early 1990s - that is, if you even placed a copy in your Super Nintendo. It was Final Fantasy, it was fun, and fairly easy compared to Final Fantasy IV and VI. It's also one of the, er, less popular titles in Square Enix's flagship series. When I played, I couldn't complain since someone gave me a copy. Don't know what Mystic Quest is? Dennis' review is linked below.

Nevertheless, as of this week Final Fantasy Mystic Quest is now up on Nintendo's Wii Virtual Console for 800 Wii points and your enjoyment. Check it out!

The funny thing about this game is even though I have played it a bunch of times, I never completed it! o.O I am more determined to finish it now :D

I'm not even sure I ever even made it to a random encounter or anything. I've only ever tried it on ROMs and usually more as just a humor than a serious attempt. I just wanted to look at it and see what it was. I've heard plenty about it and never considered actually doing anything with it since I'd heard that there were more legitimate RPGs on NES. I'm not sure why they decided to try to give us an RPG with training wheels that long after the original Final Fantasy and Dragon Warrior and stuff. I wouldn't be surprised if the game is better than I realized, as I'm sure most of the opinions I've heard came from insulted Square fans. But I've never felt a real desire to actually play and I'm honestly not sure why they'd choose to put this on virtual console. But kudos I guess for people who want to pay money for their curiosities

This was one of the very first RPGs I ever played(If not THE first) and still enjoy it to this day. :)

Pretty sure it was because the RPG market on consoles was still not terribly big in America, so the game was to hopefuly bring others into the fold. Didn't work so well.

I'll just stick to playing my SNES cart. :)

Not a terrible game at all, I got very far in the game, but I got a bit tired of the battles.

I liked it back in the day, and probably only the one day or two days I played it. I can't remember much about it except it was an odd sucker, and I dunno if I beat it. But I think I still actually own it around here somewhere.

Mystic Quest has some great music.

Good electric guitar cover of the boss theme YouTube - Final Fantasy: Mystic Quest - Boss Battle Theme on Guitar! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F-M8fuegtVc)

I am surprised that they would release such an old, forgotten title on the Virtual Console. I wonder what else they have planned to release? Secret of Evermore, maybe?

My very first RPG.

My friend Harold had been playing "Final Fantasy II" (actually IV) and I thought it looked to complicated and hard.

But then I saw an article about Mystic Quest in Nintendo Power or something saying that it was geared for beginners. So I went out and bought it and LOVED it! I finished and then borrowed Final Fantasy "II" from Harold and thus began my love for FF and RPGs in general!

Square were super smart: they knew there were people like me out there who would never have otherwise become RPG players because of how complex they looked so created and marketed a "beginners" RPG as a gateway game. Brilliant strategy.

RPGs STILL don't sell as well in the states as they do in Japan, but I think it is thanks to Mystic Quest that they sell as well as they do here.
