View Full Version : Pumpkin Carving Contest

Madonna

I have decided we are having a pumpkin carving contest. I know it is late, but I hate carving a pumpkin early and then watching it shrink and gum up like an old man. I hate old people; they smell like prunes. Old people aside, onto the contest.

Premise:
Contestants are tasked with carving the coolest pumpkin in the world. Ever.

Participants will need to: carve a pumpkin
take a picture of it
MM me that picture

Deadline:
Pictures are due on All-Hallows-Even, 7:00PM Mountain Standard Time.

How You Win and What You Win:
Come 7:00PM Mountain Standard Time on October 31st, EoFF's own IRC channel will do the judging. Want a vote? Join #eoff and talk! Voting will be kept open for a half hour. The competing pumpkins will then be posted here in this thread along with the results.

All of this is very important because there is a prize. The winner of the contest will receive a Blu-ray Collector's Edition of The Nightmare Before Christmas. I hear it is a movie about Halloween and Christmas.

Have at it!

This sounds so much fun! I just might enter. I've procrastinated on carving pumpkins, and this might push me to do it.

I would do this, but I don't have the proper pumpkin carving tools nor a pumpkin to carve at the moment. That, and I'm poor! :( Hopefully I'll get some money on my birthday coming up soon.

I would probably cut off my own hand, so I'll pass this time around. I'll spend some time watching instructional vids or some :bou::bou::bou::bou: to learn this foreign practice.

Shorty
10-25-2010, 06:21 PM
It is 10am on a Monday morning. No, I am not drunk. Just confident that my Cheyenne Cinnamon and the Fantabulous Unicorn of Sugar Town Candy pumpkin will blow Eric's Death Star out of the contest.

I'd participate but knowing this forum somebody who carved an image of a penis would probably win.

I can't carve pumpkins but I can decorate pumpkin-shaped cookies in a nerdy fashion. Can this count?

My friends, I have troubling news! The Death Gourd has been destroyed. It... Oh god! :crying2: It collapsed in on itself during construction. Many carving tools were lost.

I think the pumpkin climaxed when it realized how awesome it was turning out and it just couldn't handle that level of joy.

NorthernChaosGod
10-26-2010, 02:33 AM
It imploded under the weight of its own awesome. D:

Bunny

Do you have pictures to support your claim?

G13
10-26-2010, 03:17 AM
I was too pissed off to think of snapping a photo of my failure.

Edit: Just picture my sig folded over on itself... but as a pumpkin.

I think I'll try again with a smaller one.

Shorty
10-26-2010, 05:38 AM
Eric, I will give you a tip. You don't have to actually carve through the pumpkin. Just like, shave some parts off a bit to make them see-through. It will still sustain it's structure. I demand that you re-try.

Why am I giving you pointers, we're enemies!

Madonna
10-26-2010, 05:45 AM
The first casualty is a big one; my sympathies, Guardian XIII.

Bunny, the first rule of Pumpkin Carving Contest is it has to be a pumpkin.

I picked up a brace of large pumpkins today; tomorrow, I carve my own atrocities.

I had thought of that but, to my knowledge, my idea hasn't been done yet. I think it would be pretty badass if I pulled it off. :jess:

But they are pumpkins! They are just also cookies.

Right, update: Zero (0) pictures. Four (4) days left. Uh-oh.

Personally disheartened as I am, may I point this out: a sudden participant may find themselves the only participant, and thus an easy winner of the spoils. What better way to win than by little effort?

Shorty
10-28-2010, 12:35 AM
Oh! Maybe I didn't read the rules correctly. I thought we would be submitting the photos on Halloween for some reason.

I plan on carving tonight, anyway~

It is seven-thirty (7:30PM) my time, meaning VOTING IS NOW CLOSED. If you have been in the channel, you already know who the winner is! If not, now you too can know! (Well, not it is 7:38, but.)

Our winner of this Pumpkin Carving Contest is...not Raistlin, Guardian XIII, Genius Lynx, or Levian! The clear winner is Shorty! Hats off to the winner! A prize is in the mail already! Throw confetti, pop the champagne! Kiss a friend! Whatever.

I am so prepping better next year. A big thanks to all participants, carvers and voters alike!

Votes:
Raistlin 1
Guardian XIII 0
Shorty 4
Genius Lynx 1
Levian 3

Sarah's is definitely the best. That thing is intricate. The others were all very good, too (except mine, which was just a product of goofing off with friends).

Thank you so much! PZ Myers liked it, too. (http://scienceblogs.com/pharyngula/2010/10/happy_halloween_3.php)

Lev was an excellent runner-up. I voted for him myself.

Raistlin
11-01-2010, 03:26 AM
Since Sarah is apparently hesitant to toot her own horn too much, I will say that Pharyngula (PZ's blog) is one of the largest personal blogs on science and atheism on the internet. Considering he posted it above-the-fold, it is safe to say that tens of thousands of people have seen or will see her pumpkin.

haha Nice pumpkin, Wes. Sarah that looks like it took a long time to do. Very nice. Lynx that thing is creepy as all hell and I love it. Levian that was a good idea, very nicely done. It's unfortunate there were such a small amount of entries, I was looking forward to seeing a whole bunch.
