This is the lamest argument that has ever existed in the history of the world, nay, the universe.

Soda, anyone asking for a pop is giving me permission to go upside their head.

Oh, look, the good part of the country calls it "pop" and the shallow plastic part calls it "soda." How interesting. The hillbillies just call it "coke."

Having spent all of my life between Texas and Illinois and going on several trips to various parts of the country with my father when he was a truck driver, I have only ever heard it referred to as "soda" except by my Illinois grandparents, who called it pop. I never realized that so many people below the age of forty used any other word until these threads started popping up.

Bunny's graph is either before my time or very inaccurate because never in the ten years I lived in Nueces county have I ever heard anyone ask me if I wanted a coke, unless they were specifically referring only to Coca Cola. Maybe only old people were polled?

EDIT:

Oh, when I was a kid and people used that "talking to a little kid" voice with me, I was often asked by my family if I wanted a "sodie-pop."

My Grandaddy used to call it Pop. I went "what?" the first time he said that to me.

What is the "other?" What else is there to call it?

I call them all coke, the same way you call tissues Kleenex. Next to that, I also use the word soda. I never use the word pop, because that's immoral.

I know of one guy who calls them all "carbonated beverages." What an asshole.

Does he say it in the same way as the guy from Kung Pow?

Well, you do say "y'all" sometimes.

No I don't.

Everyone I know calls it "pop" and always has done since I was a kid. I am a bit pretentious, so I usually call it soda to spite everyone else, and "sodapop" when I remember to.

I had no idea people called it all Coke. That's weird.

SOFT DRINK.

No I still call it soda. I'm basically the only one in the whole damn country.

Also ITT I see the map and variation for the umpteenth time.

Pop, gimmie my red pop back you douche. Then again I do love Cream soda... and uhhh yeah. CONTRADICTIONS!!!

The thing is, I like to both use my mind and limit the amount of energy I use in a conversation. Pop is one syllable, Soda is two. Pop therefore takes less effort to say, and thus I use it.

I vote for a new poll.
Soft Drink vs. Hard Liquor

I think the third option should be Sodiepop. I only knew two people who called it that, and they both said Sodiepop instead of sodapop. Even Cotton on King of the Hill said Sodie pop.

I'm going to report this thread for having nonsensial poll options.

Clearly anything other than soda is just silly.

The only correct answer is soft drink. ;)

A pop is a grandfather and soda is carbon-dioxide-flavoured.

soda water is disguting. =/

When I first moved to Michigan from Mississippi I was so annoyed that every time I asked for a coke the waiter/waitress would walk off without asking me what kind I wanted.

Everything is coke down here and then you get to clarify.

PS: Saying y'all is fantastic!

When I speak English, I use soda, because that's what's most commonly used in pop culture (no pun intended,) and is thus what I've been exposed to the most.

However, I never really say any of them since I'm not English. I call it "brus."
