"A woman in Japan claims her obsessive-compulsive disorder worsened and she feared everything she did throughout the day was secretly recorded after Google Street View captured images of her underwear hanging out to dry, the U.K. Telegraph reports. So she's suing the search giant for $7,000."

Article here. (http://technolog.msnbc.msn.com/_news/2010/12/20/5683487-woman-sues-google-for-exposing-her-underwear-on-street-view?GT1=43001)

If she's so antsy about her underthings being seen, I'm questioning why she is hanging them out to dry in public view in the first place.

Discuss 1) ridiculous things captured by Google Street View and 2) what Google Street View would have to capture you doing in order for you to want to sue them.

My gf (who is getting her doctorate in psychology) confirmed how serious OCD can be, especially in this case, so I don't really blame the lady for doing what she did. $7,000 is a pretty paltry sum anyway, so it doesn't really matter.

The fact that OCD can be incredibly serious does not in any way impact how Google should be liable. I have no idea about Japanese law, but under US tort law this lawsuit would fail horribly. There is nothing wrong with taking a single photograph of something in public view.

I don't particularly care what Google Street sees, as I'm sure I have posted more embarrassing pictures publicly on the internet.

7,000 was it? WTF?

If she was american, it would be at LEAST seven million.

There's always the famous samurai battle in Pittsburgh (http://maps.google.com/maps?t=h&layer=c&cbll=40.457615,-80.007735&panoid=r4tDjo_x6CdB1--gBhzNXg&cbp=12,39.2,,0,24.89&ie=UTF8&ll=40.457658,-80.007505&spn=0,0.01929&z=16).

I love Street View. It saves me the trouble of having to sneakily hide in bushes and carefully take photos of women's clothes. One time I even saw a BRA!!!

Also I once passed a Google Street view car and made the best face ever at it. But they didn't use the image and I was heartbroken because I'd already called all my friends and family and told them I was going to be on Street View. Boy was my Paul's Street View Debut Party an awkward occasion.

maybe she should stop buying cheap underwear so she doesn't have to be embarrassed about it. Why is she hanging her underwear outside anyway? Everyone knows it's gonna get stolen within minutes in Japan.

TBH I am going to be sad when this image is updated (if they ever bother to), but you can see my car parked in front here

The point was less about Google's supposed involvement and more about everyone previous calling her a crazy person.

Fair enough, then.

Clothes dryers are very rare in Japan; most people hang their laundry outside to dry. Seeing underwear hanging isn't uncommon.

I get that she has OCD, and I have no problem with her asking Google to remove the image, but suing is ridiculous. I'm having a hard time being mad at her, though, since she's suing for such a small amount, so... whatever.

Is OCD even the correct term? Wouldn't it be paranoid schitzophrenia?

Raistlin

There are a lot of mental disorders, and paranoia is presumably a symptom for more than one.

I get that she has OCD, and I have no problem with her asking Google to remove the image, but suing is ridiculous.

Suing is ridiculous, but depending on the intensity of her disorder, a severe reaction is more understandable. People with mental disorders aren't exactly at their most rational. It's not like she's going to win anyway.

Paranoia can be described as "obsessive thoughts," so it is absolutely a symptom of OCD.

Poor crazy lady.

If the exposure has worsened her OCD enough to warrant more and costlier treatment, then I can understand her suing. The fact that it's such a small amount she's suing for makes me wonder if that's the case.

Tunnels. A friend of mine and I were wondering whether Street View includes tunnels and decided to investigate. It does.

7,000 from Google is like a drop in the ocean to them if she does win.

But I highly doubt she will if she contacted Google and said "Don't take a picture of my house when I'm hanging out my undies." And they did anyway I guess she would have more of a chance (And would probably be the weirdest thing for one of there receptionists to deal with).

But I don't think Google would listen anyway their freaking Google. The most she would get is removing the image I imagine.

I wouldn't mind being naked on Google Street View. It's not like anyone is going to see me naked via any other legal means, anyway.

I can understand if you want the image to be taken off, but to sue them is a little extreme. Whatever, Google can afford the lawsuit. Googling "Funny Google Street View" is good enough for me.
