When Square would release titles without milking the "Final Fantasy" brand?

When titles like "Chrono Trigger", "Secret of Mana", and "Xenogears" were allowed to exist?

What would they be called if released today?

Chrono Trigger = Final Fantasy in Time
Secret of Mana = Final Fantasy: Sword of Mana
Xenogears = Final Fantasy: Evangelion
Front Mission = Final Fantasy Tactics: 20XX
Vagrant Story = Final Fantasy XII-0: The Prequel
Einhander = Final Fantasy: Schmup Edition
Super Mario RPG = Super Final Fantasy Bros.

Seriously, Square. Stop milking the brand. And, while you're at it, I still need an explanation as to what a "Ten-Two" and now a "Thirteen-Two" are? What does that mean? Those aren't "numbers" that's for sure.

And since you're making a "Thirteen-Two" now... What exactly does that make "Versus XIII" or "Agito XIII" since they have absolutely no connection to "Final Fantasy XIII" in any way, shape, or form?

(This is a rhetorical question as the obvious reasons for adding "Thirteen" in the titles is brand name marketing... However, they did not quite count on everyone in both America and Japan actually hating "Final Fantasy XIII" -- I'm sure that put a bit of a wrench in their egotistical marketing ploys.)

It's not too late for them to be revisionist and change the titles retroactively....

That and Chrono Trigger goes way better as Final Fantasy Chronus. So natural Chrono Cross would read Final Fantasy Chronus /23:@7^

Does it matter ? it is just name.

No, it does matter. Square should develop new IPs rather than put everything under one brand. It dilutes the FF brand. Look at FF: Crystal Chronicles. How is that related at all to the FF roots? To be honest, I don't understand the whole Versus XIII thing. If it's not a true FF to be a numbered FF, why not call it something else. If it is close enough to FF roots, why not call it FFXIV. Bizarre.

And Vagrant Story would be FF12 - The Future

I would somewhat be okay with the pathetic milking if SE ever milked anything interesting or good. They've made one game I've liked in the last decade (re-makes don't count - not that I play them anyway).

They still do, (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Square_Enix_games) but people only pay attention to Final Fantasy, so they probably should just milk it.

Outside the portables, the only game Square-Enix developed itself is Nier and The Last Remnant. Even on the portables, Final Fantasy dominates (along with Kingdom Hearts). If you remember the PSone, Square developed three FFs, Vagrant Story, Chrono Cross, Xenogears, SaGa, two Front Missions, two Parasite Eves, Legend of Mana and an array of other less good titles. Released in a space of 6 years.

Final Fantasy is there best selling franchise. And they do make other games as Jess showed us. Although I do feel like they should build more franchises and pick up some of their older franchise again. I personally don't think they are milking the name of Final Fantasy, they just aren't doing enough with the other gems that they've made (like all the games you have mentioned).

IMO KH is a franchise that is quite annoying. They add lots of stupid stuff to it and they make too many games between games. There's KH:CoM and 358/2 Days (between KH one and two) BBS (before 1), there's coded and 3DS (I've not even bothered to read about those) and apparently BBS Final Mix hints at another title which is between BBS and the first KH. I may have missed out one or two but I think it shows how ridiculous the KH franchise has become. Since the first release of KH in 2002 they've released 6 games under this franchise (most of which I consider 'filler' material), and I'm not even counting the Final Mix release, which is a way of making people spend more money on just a bit of extra added content.

But, truth be told, I still love KH, I just don't have time for the bs 'filler' material. I just want to play KH3, but that doesn't look like it's happening anytime soon (Versus XIII's using the same team that make KH games)

I agree. I believe that Square Enix should start making more independent titles on consoles like Xbox 360 and Playstation 3.
