Is this picture really insulting?

A friend of mine says that this picture is insulting, because the first thing it says is "I'm not afraid of Muslims", and that it implies that a Muslim is, in fact, a person to be feared. In my opinion, I think she's not understanding the context of the picture, and that it's not really saying "I'm not afraid of those scary Muslims", but more like "I'm not afraid of those Muslims who live nearby me who happen to be pretty normal people". But just out of curiosity, what's your opinion?

And I know it's in GC. I think this thread is just pointless enough to not go into EoEO. :p

The point they're trying to make is that it's stupid to say you fear one group of people. Everyone is an individual, and it's dangerous to assign a blanket emotion/reputation to one group of people. It encourages you to make quick, shallow judgements of an individual once you learn they are "one of those", instead of getting to know the person.

Example:

Most Muslims aren't plotting to blow up your daycare.

Most Tea Partiers aren't plotting to blow up the abortion clinic.

Most Socialists aren't planning to overthrow the government in a violent coup.

Most Immigrants come here for a better life, and don't want to milk the system for Welfare.

Most gun owners aren't going to climb a water tower and start sniping people.

Most gays aren't going to call into question your own sexuality, give you Aids, or make marriage fail in the eyes of your God. (at least I think that's what people's beef with gays is. I really don't understand it.)

But those stereotypes and others like them are what we assign to groups of people. While they might be hilarious, and make for hours of giggling with a group of friends, they can't be taken seriously. It's inaccurate at best.

Unless I missed the point. I've been known to do that occasionally.

I think the sign is clever, because it's comparing the un-easyness that some people feel around those groups of people to the fear people have for spiders, and when you compare them, you realise that those groups of people don't really scare you at all, it's all in your head. Witty.
Your friend is lame and clearly clutching at spanners to try and propel their own agenda. Tell them they're being stupid and that stupidness like that is the reason people try so hard to be PC.
