I have a bit of an addiction. I work on cars as one of my jobs. I love them.

My usual driver is a red 1990 Mazda Miata. I also have a white 1987 Mazda RX-7 Turbo II, a red 1987 BMW 325is (beat to hell, project car), and a Blue/Black Suzuki GSX-R 600. I probably drive the RX-7 and ride the GSX-R equally.

None of them remain unmodified. It's really a sickness.

PeeGee, the Mazda 3 is an awesome little car. You just picked a crap-o-matic! :p

I drive a 2007 Toyota Carola, which I've had since 2006 and made a thread about it when I bought it.

I will probably keep it for a long time. It's only failed me once because of some on board computer issue that they recently recalled the model for.

Before that I drove a 1990 (I think) Nissan Sentra and before that a 1974 Opel Manta.

Why no love for the domestics?

I drive a 1995 Subaru outback with 305,000~ miles. It will last forever or turn into dust. Before that I drove a 2001 Chevy Cavalier and before that a 1992 F-150. So far the F-150 was my favorite because it was the nicest at the time (and I drove it at a time when gas didn't cost my bodily organs to buy.) The Subaru, though, is a tank. I can do anything to that car and it just keeps on running along. I think my next car will probably be a Subaru, even though I'm a sucker for muscle cars.

Subies are awesome, if a little quirky. Like Volvo. I have much love for domestics!

The Mazdas I own were built when Mazda was majority owned by Ford. ;)

Of course Ford is international.

Those were just the cars I drive some what regularly. Some other cars running or not that I have/will inherit are a '66 Ford Mustang drop top (with cruise-o-matic and pony package), a '68 Ford Mustang Coupe, 3 Triumph Spitfires (can't remember the years), a '65 Chevrolet Corvair, a '59 Austin Healy Sprite (Mark 1 FTW!), a '75 Volkswagen Scirroco ( I love that car), '79 Ford Fiesta (heavily modded), '80 Ford Fiesta, '79 Mazda RX-7 (heavily modded), a Blakely Bantam. They're all in various states of repair.

Then there's the race cars. We have 3 Zink Z-10 Chassis's, and 4 Miatas that have been prepped to different levels for road racing.

You have to post pictures of your cars, especially the RX-7.

Petunia? She's a fickle bitch that decided to drop compression in one of the chambers last week, which means I have either two stuck seals or two blown seals. :mad2: I can't stay made at her.

2010 Harley 1200Low. I love her.

1979 Ford F-250. This was my first truck and I still have it. It's pretty much a monster truck and I drive it as such.

2006 Ford Ranger. Eh, it's my every day. I already have my big truck and wanted something smaller with better gas mileage. I'm pretty tempted to trade it in for a full sized newer truck though.

I've also had a '78 Ford LTD which my friends nicknamed The Yellow Submarine 'cause it was a big yellow boat car, a 1996? Ford Ranger, and a 2004? Honda Civic.

Hell yeah I do! All your cars are modded, right? What's the hp and torque of Petunia?

Well, she's never been dynoed so it's all ass-o-meter, but driving it compared to other cars we estimate around 240-260hp. I'm not sure about torque. Rotaries aren't the torquiest beasts known to man. Boost comes on around 3, and from there it's pretty strong. I've only had the car a year, so right now when I have time and money I'm just going through her and tidying things up. The car was a wiring nightmare, and a lot of the soft interior bits need some TLC. She has a full Racing Beat exhaust (that damn exhaust is 1,600 dollars on it's own so I'm glad the PO coughed up the money for that) that really helps spool, and a 9 lb. HKS flywheel to help things spin up much faster. The biggest issue right now is that under heavy(I say heavy, but I mean about 10 lbs.) boost she breaks up a little, and can't get a clean pull. We're talking to some stand alone ECU guys (DIY Megasquirt) about using her as a test bed to create an aftermarket ECU for a Turbo II. There's nothing out there like that unless you build it from scratch yourself. Right now she's using a Gameboy Advance to run a rudimentary boost controller program, but that's not ideal. :(

Once that's done, I plan to upgrade from the S4 to the S5 turbo, and switch the stock Hitachi turbo housing to a Greddy housing. Hitachi is basically a poor man's Greddy and switching the housing out is supposed to be straightforward. The nice thing about a rotary is that you don't need to upgrade to forged internals, so you just change the shape of your ports, get a good engine management system to control AFRs, spark, blah blah blah, and we should see 400hp and similar torque with just the stock s5 turbo and slightly better housing.

All this is long-term. I have school, racing, and plenty of other projects. She'll get there though. She gets some love about once a week.

That red hood in the background is a customer's Miata. It'll be putting down 375-400 rwhp, and going after z06s or Carrera Turbos here soon. We're pretty excited about that.

How the hell did you get this to work?

 You probably already know the term, but it's called a "piggy-back" system. It uses the stock ECU and an aftermarket communication box talks to it. Various sensors (WB02, knock, intake temp, exhaust temp) are used in tandem with the stock ECU and sent to that box. That box reads all the data and helps the ecu controls fuel, air, etc. to the engine. The Gameboy itself is actually your interface to that box so that you can monitor what it's seeing, and make adjustments to fuel maps and what not. It has it's cute little digital boost gauge, and other stuff. It's not terrible, it's definitely better than nothing, but to go further it really needs a more powerful complete stand alone system.

Then I can control AFRs, spark/ignition, injector load (opening and closing time), launch control, adjust rev limit, customize and auto-tune my AF maps. All that jazz.

Okay NCG, it was a busy day at work, but I snapped a few quick pictures. When I tried to load them some worked, some failed. I didn't get a picture of the GBA for example. I'll try again tomorrow. Here's a picture of the GSX-R, and the Miata. Also Petunia's engine bay.

The Miata pretty heavily modified, but it's not a straight line performance monster. I've added different chassis stiffening braces, thicker front and rear sway bars, Tokico 5-way adjustable gas shocks, and lowering spring. I added larger brake calipers and rotors. Dropping the cars center of gravity and firming up the ride really helps the Miata's already phenomenal handling, and also helps get the most of my brake up grades. The wheels are Kosie K-1's. That same we use on the race cars. They're light (11 lbs?), tough, and give the car a larger footprint. With handling cared for, I moved on to the motor. It's nothing crazy. I've added an Eaton M45 roots style supercharger with smaller diameter nose pulley. Right now it's making 8-10 lbs of boost. The 1.6l Miata is not a powerful car from the factory. About 116 hp at the flywheel. This one is making around 150hp give or take. I'm adding a stand alone ECU to it here in the next week or two. This will allow me to get more from my set up safely with out damaging my power plant. The ultimate goal is to swap in the same type of power plant Petunia has. A turbo 13b would be really interesting in a Miata. That's far down the line.

In preparing to wire up my new ecu I went ahead and pulled the entire interior out of the car to make wiring cleaner and easier. It originally had an all black interior. That one picture is with the tan carpet installed while I'm still wiring before I added the rest of the tan pieces.

Cosmetically, I've added a different front end. The nose provides a larger opening for an intercooler to be installed at a later date, and also provides openings for brake ducts and secondary coolers for the oil and/or transmission. The car has been re-painted, and the lower chip guard removed, sanded smooth, and painted to match the rest of the car.

I'll try to get a picture of the car all cleaned up here sometime.

The other mystery vehicle is Coma. She's called that because I don't have much time to ride her so she's basically in a coma. Also, eventually she'll put me in a coma. Nothing major has been done to her. She has some larger jets, and a different clutch setup. I might do a few more things to her, but 108hp on a 450 lb motorcycle is about plenty for me.

Jesus, man. Which engine are you dropping into the convertible?

The GM 5.7liter. I think it's an LO. It's the engine model before the LT1.

LS1 swaps are fairly common, but this car is a convertible. If it were a coupe we might go that route for performance. The conv. chassis isn't ideal for a performance monster. This big v8 should still be PLENTY to help it get out of it's own way. We bought a Buick Roadmaster for 300 bucks for the powertrain. The plan is to pull the engine and transmission, and scrap the rest. The beast weighs so much, that at scrap value we'll get enough money back to basically have gotten the engine and trans for free.

If you want to know more about why, I'll continue to ramble. Just let me know. I'll add some pics of the future cruiser.

It's one car that I'd like to own as a daily driver but work on little by little. I have a list of cars actually.

I was thinking either second or third generation, with the second probably being easier and cheaper to acquire.

The issue with rotaries is ones that aren't properly rebuilt. People see drag and race rotaries that turn and turn and turn and won't fire. Or the engines that just pop when they get wrung out. The thing is those are race motors, and aren't built to last.

They get bad wrap as being :bou::bou::bou::bou:ty motors when it's just not the case. A properly rebuilt 13b will give you 300k easy as long as it's maintained. Thing is that parts aren't cheap. One of the main reasons we're doing this 5.7 swap is that it will be cheaper, even after rebuilding the thing, than correctly rebuilding and installing the 13b.

It will have more room under the hood for the v-8 than the same era or more modern Camaro. It will weigh less than the same era Camaro, and have better brakes/suspension than the Camaro. Win, win, win.

Why don't you want a first gen 7? Those little things are beasts.

NorthernChaosGod
02-14-2011, 11:46 PM
Yeah, I've heard a bit about rotaries. The general consensus seems to be about just what you said.

And it sounds like you got a pretty beastly car in the makes.

I don't actually want to do much to the appearance and I like the look of the later generations a bit more. And at least with the second gen there isn't a big hike in price.

It's not all pixie dandruff and unicorn farts. They have cons just like any other design. They're thirsty, and by design have issues with emmisions. People assume since they're burning oil they're crummy engines. They try to compare them to traditional piston engines too much. Most don't understand that a rotary is SUPPOSED to burn oil. It's normal. The oil lubricates all the seals. It's better to look at them as a hybrid between a 2-stroke and a 4-stroke.

If you get a second gen you won't have to worry about it, but if you get a first gen make sure it doesn't have the 12a. There's nothing wrong with it, but parts are even harder to find than for a 13b. You never said why you weren't looking at a first gen. What's the deal?

People give them a bad wrap, but you'd be wise to look at a first gen Miata. They're perfectly balanced, RWD, easy to work on, cheap to maintain, and the sky is the limit for tuning. Food for thought.

baka question - is learning to drive manual difficult or does it just require practice?

sharkythesharkdogg
02-16-2011, 09:01 PM
Learning manual is easy, with the stipulation that you've chosen a vehicle with a nice light clutch and easy throttle manipulation.

This rules out most Jeeps and trucks. It also rules out learning on your friend's "mad tyte JDM yo" modified Prelude with a stage four drag clutch.

Find a nice compact four cylinder, and it's patient owner/friend. I've taught many "unteachables" and there's one common theme in my observation. They get apprehensive at the moment of clutch engagement. Learning to simultaneously engage the clutch and apply gas is a steep coordination curve. As soon as some feel the clutch start to engage they quickly jerk their foot all the way off of the clutch pedal. Meanwhile they still haven't given the car enough gas, the engine RPM's dip too low, and the engine stalls. They get nervous and embarrassed, and the situation snow balls.

I take my car and manually raise the idle rpm up. Now the car idles much faster than normal, but as the new person engages the clutch, the RPM's will never dip enough for the car to stall. So the student can then concentrate on learning the feel of the clutch engaging and practice shifting. Once they've mastered clutch engagement, I drop the RPM's back down and let them practice gas pedal modulation.

By separating those two learned skills, it keeps the person from getting overwhelmed and discouraged. I've never had anyone who learned manual regret it, or feel it was a waste of time. Seriously. No one. It's just fun.

EDIT: Here's a little bonus for NCG.

Miatas are two-seaters, but so are RX-7's. So I'm not thinking that would be a deal breaker for you. I love mine. I am curious why you asked though.

Another fine car is a something like that 325is I have. It's a two door with a back seat. With the right additions you can have a kick ass car with a stout straight six. There's a reason they went with the "big six" theme. People who drove them swore it felt like a V8.

Also, I could have swore RX-7s had back seats in some.

The Japanese ones (and maybe some other markets) had back seats TECHNICALLY. Really they were grocery bag shelves with seat belts. It was done so that the RX-7 would fit a better tax bracket. The seats were child safety size. If you look in an american second gen that area has been replaced by two storage compartments which actually come in hand for all types a great ideas.

I couldn't see your post, bunny??? American muscle? Edit: I missed the link. Mustangs are everywhere. If you have your heart set on a rotary with a usable back seat you're left with the

R100 (http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3289/2940341212_1fee327944.jpg) Never shipped to the U.S., and you simply won't be able to get. Ever. Let it go.

RX-2 (http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3058/2676284723_1433984d21.jpg?v=0) First rotary to be used in a race series. It was very succesful. Was considered the family sedan, as opposed to the

RX-3
(http://www.k4.dion.ne.jp/~zeon/LOVELOG_IMG/RX-3.JPG) Which was the sporty coupe. I think it looks awesome until I look at the

RX-4 (http://image.importtuner.com/f/10336295/impp_0808_03_z+hot_import_nights_la+1974_mazda_rx4.jpg)

and that's it except for the Cosmo which was never offered in the U.S.

Throw in Mazda's rotary truck, the REPU (http://static.cargurus.com/images/site/2009/07/30/05/48/pic-11575.jpeg), all the different versions of the Cosmo (http://www.earlydatsun.com/cosmo.jpg), the rotary motorcyle called the RE-5 (http://autoresourse.ru/wp-content/uploads/2009/07/Suzuki-RE5.jpg) that they helped Suzuki develop, and of course the RX-8, and that's pretty much every Mazda rotary I can remember.

I'm confused. Why wouldn't you want to buy with cash? I've easily talked people down several grand on cars just by being able to pay up front with cash. This one has been available for a while. Either there's something up with it, or it's just another victim of the slow car market. I've seen plenty of tuned cars like this around where I live that I know to be good, solid cars that people have sold for no where near what they had in them. That's the catch of tuning an older car like this. You'll never be able to sell it for what you invested in it. I bet he'd let it go for around 4k if you had cash. If it's a solid car, that's a killer deal.

Off subject, but car related.

We just assembled an ECU for a customer's car so he can get the most out of his super-charged set up. I'm excited because I can make something similar for the Turbo II RX-7 and the 325is and have fun with them. Actually, I could make one for my motorcycle too. I don't plan to, but this hardware is pretty flexible in it's applications.

Anyone else on here trying to do some engine management for their vehicle on a budget needs to check these guys out. DIYAutoTune.com (http://www.diyautotune.com/)

My Miata already has an aftermarket MSpnp ECU by them. So do the race cars we campaign. So far, I'd stand by it.

We're getting some long term customer projects out the door and once we rebuild the head in our race care, we'll probably have enough time and space to work on one of our long term projects.

We were planning on that 2nd gen rx-7 with a v-8 I mentioned previously. Like this, but red.

People are sort of surprised at the x-types because it's a Jaguar, but it doesn't have quite the pedigree of other Jags. It's supposed to be Jaguar's entry level sedan, so it's really a Ford Mondeo with extra gadgetry. I guess Jaguar thought entry level was 40k+ for nicely optioned one. :roll2

So it has a decent platform it's based of off, but it's more of a hybird. Still with the v6, and especially if you have 4 wheel drive, I'm surprised that you get blown around. Those are pretty heavy cars. Weird. Sorry. :(

uuummmm, damn. Neons are completely boring econoboxes, but they aren't that bad usually. They're just typical appliance/point a to point b style commuter cars.

Does it have a check engine light? Is it waay down on power, or sluggish? It sounds like you have a bad catalytic converter or something along those lines. There's no reason for that little 4 cylinder to have such terrible gas mileage. Is the area around the exhaust really black?

Yep, the check engine light is always on. The area around the exhaust seems fine, but the problem here is, I can't afford to get the car fixed currently. Well, with out knowing what engine code/codes the thing is giving you it's all speculation, but my guess is that you have a faulty o2 sensor. The o2 sensor monitors exhaust emissions, and among other things, helps the engine computer maintain a proper air/fuel mixture for the engine. If the o2 is malfunctioning, the ECU (engine computer) might be telling the car to burn way more fuel than it really needs. This would obviously harm gas mileage, cause the car to become sluggish, and since it's no longer burning a clean mixture possibly cause the catalytic converter to fail.

Once the catalytic converter fails, the exhaust gases aren't cleaned properly, the o2 sensor gets an even MORE erroneous exhaust gas reading, and the ECU gives an even more improper air/fuel mixture. Plus a failed catalytic converter obstructs the flow of exhaust which makes the car lose power, and you guessed it, lose mpg's. It's like a perfect circle of crap. :|

But car's are complex little beasts, and it could be something completely different. A place like Advance Auto will read your engine code for free. While that won't give you a definite idea for a fix, it will at least get you pointed in the right direction. Free is good.

I strongly believe that the Neon is the Yugo of the Dodge/Plymouth/Chrysler world. I haven't been proven wrong yet.

I'll contest that theory with the Plymouth Breeze.

I currently drive a 2003 white chevy blazer, but god I want this. (http://www.cartype.com/pics/6942/full/aston_martin_lagonda_2_09.jpg)

While those are all great candidates terrible cars, one of my favorites is the Plymouth PT Cruiser. It's built off of a Dodge Neon with bigger heavier body work making the cabin space a little more cramped, the car heavier and slower, and generally making it harder and more expensive to work on.

It's the greatest.....

Yep, the check engine light is always on. The area around the exhaust seems fine, but the problem here is, I can't afford to get the car fixed currently. I'm doing my damnedest to save to get it fixed though. And yeah, the car is pretty sluggish. I have to push the pedal down to the floor to even begin to get the car over a hill.

Two of my friends have much newer Neons (one has an '08, the other an '09) with some pretty bad problems akin to the ones mine is having. It's just strange and funny to see.

Shoot, thanks for even taking the time to tell me any of this.

It sucks trying to keep gas in the car. I just filled it up two days ago and it's already down to half, and I haven't really been anywhere other than Hilliard which is only 3 miles away from here.

This problem could have been avoided if the dopes where we got the Taurus from 4 years ago would have allowed us to refinance the car. Could have sold the Neon and just kept the Taurus and there would have been no problems. I only got the Neon in the first place because I didn't feel right driving my dad's car (plus if I would have been in an accident in it, even if it wasn't my fault, both my parents would have held that over my head, so.....). But then things changed only a week after getting it, and I decided to try to keep the Taurus, but it didn't work out.

Also, I'd never be caught dead driving a PT Cruiser. :jess:

Well that brings up, what do you think of these cars?

They're getting a lot of flack for being ugly, and I don't want to work on 'em, but I think they look great.

Speaking of cars, I got an oil change today and apparently mine has an oil leak as well as a cracked driveshaft boot, and I also need new tires.

Now I need to figure out how to get the money to be able to fix ANY of that. D:

I drive a 99 Ford KA. It's my first car, and I've had him for 4, maybe 5, years now. He may be 12 years old, but he only has 45,000 miles on the clock and he's never let me down. Plus, he's cute.

His name is Kenny. Some day in the future I plan on getting Kenny V2, a new style Ford KA.

My dream car is an Audi R8. I love Audi's in general but they're expensive! :jess:

Shorty, the Mazda 3 is a solid reliable car. Obviously I'm partial to Mazdas, but I'll still be honest about them. Their automatic transmissions aren't the greatest, and they don't make the most powerful four cylinders out there.

I think they just make a car that is more fun to drive than average. They handle and drive so well and balanced. Little touches like factory strut bars, mag wheels, and four wheel disc brakes coming standard on even some of the base models.

You should be pleased, and it looks really sharp.

It totally is! It's a dual trans but I go with automatic because it's more comfortable to me than manual. Some things I wish it had are 1) power windows 2) cruise control and 3) flat folding seats. But other than that, it's a sporty red dream~

I drove 30 miles today and the fuel gage barely went down at all. Jackpot.
