If you have one of the launch models, yes. Otherwise, no.

If you are in doubt, why don't you just insert a PS2 game and see if it boots?

pinches bridge of nose

shaibana, I really don't know what to do with you. If it plays original playstation games, then it is most likely programmed for playstation 2 games. you can go to any gamestop and get a ps2 game for 99 cents and see if it works, if it does, then go back and buy a good game. I got x-2 for $3

No, that is wrong. PS1 support does not automatically mean PS2 support. Every PS3 can play PS1 games, only a small minority of PS3s can play PS2 games. As far as I know, the versions that could play PS2 games all came with 60 GB hard drives.

If not well... PS2's are really cheap these days, right?

Should be able to get one that's even modded for less than a hundred bucks.

Idd, that its able to play ps1 games doesnt give the guarantee that it also played ps2 games.

the point is that i have an 'old ps3' .. and some old ps3's support ps2 games..
and i dont know if my ps3 is 'old enough'

if you want to check, walk into your nearest gamestop, purchase some lame 99 cent ps2 game, and see if it works. If it does, then yes your PS3 will play PS2, if it doesn't, sorry then you need a PS2 or a emulator

In fact, all you need to do is look at this link (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PS3#Model_comparison), and compare the model numbers there to the one on your PS3.

Do all of the PS3s support PS1 games? Because I have like, the newest one, and I wouldn't mind having a bash about on something old school.

the ending kinda sucks anyways, now missing 12, that is sad. Missing x2 is a good thing, because once you start, you eventually have to finish, and the whole game is just awful

FFX had a good ending. FFX-2 ruined that ending, but had plenty of good gameplay.

Yes

except FF9 doesn't work on mine. Just freezes after the PS logo screen. Works fine on my PS2 though, but doesn't support video output through component cable there.
