You asshats need to start putting what book your spoiler is for when tagging a book spoiler, for goodness sake. I had to learn to use the report button because of this thread. It was traumatic!
Loved the episode. I was waiting for that Arya scene for so long. BJ insists she was too calm, but I think that's kind of the point--Arya becomes so quickly comfortable with killing.
I love every single character.
ive already heard enough spoilers from my boyfriends brother :l
luckely i forgot half of them.
i really hate him for it.
me and my bf were discussing game of thrones somewhere around season 2 when he walked in.
and he was like: '' how far is game of thrones? did he and he already die? and what about her? did she already die?''
he has read the books but he doesnt watch the show..
i wanted to slap him real bad
i am currently reading the books, but i will not go any further then the tv-show will go.
i have witnessedthat readingthe books first will ruin the show, like it did with harry potter!
You really should've slapped him. WTF.
It must be in the genes. I see her going the same way as her father if she keeps it up. I already had warning signs go off when I heard, "They have a choice; they can live in my new world or die in their old one." Yeah, 'cause that's a choice.
Yep, same here. Like her father and brother she will probably become bat shit insane.
Her brother didn't become insane.
Hahahaha. I'm shocked anybody hates her to be honest. I thought I was the only one. I'm sick of her being promoted as one of the lead characters in this series. It's ONLY because the actress is beautiful, I swear.
She has the dragons.
The other sword was Arya's.
Oo, I didn't think of that. They twisted on us!
After season 3's ending, I'm actually excited to see what comes next with Dany. Yeah, I SAID IT.
I'm just a little annoyed that I've gotten so much shit for not liking Dany (not just Emilia Clarke, but her character/storyline as well) and I got so much shit for it. And now everyone in this thread is all "Eh, she's boring now, I don't like her." It's dumb.
Don't worry, I'll still give you plenty of shit for not liking Dany.

I still don't understand the Dany hate. In fact I look forward to her scenes.
I understand the dislike/hatred of Dany around this time in the show/book but not from the very beginning. She has very few interesting parts and most of it is just a girl trying to play at being a queen, rather than character development on par with certain other characters. I still enjoy her character both in the show and book, but I can understand where people come from with the hatred.
The episode was overall very good for an opener and the last scene was pretty flawless. When they first announced it, I didn't really get how they were going to bring the show to a close in 2017 but with the mash-ups happening from ACOK, ASOS and AFFC, I guess it makes a certain amount of sense.
I loved Daenerys in Season 1. At first she was timid, shy, and uncertain. And after being gifted with three dragon eggs, a massive army and the sexiest man in history, the power started to go to her head. But it's undeniable that in the first season she had some powerful character development. Perhaps the best development of any other character in that one season. It's not the same now though. Everybody else keeps ascending in development. Dany is playing a game with slaves. Trying to learn how to rule. And that's supposed to be interesting, but she is horrible at ruling. Fact is, she hasn't made any good decisions at all. Continues to make mistake after mistake.
And oh, she killed Khal Drogo. Twice. Seriously, screw her. But I love Ser Jorah as much as everybody else. He's just not enough to have me tolerate Dany's bulltrout. She's just a joke. To take from Season 2, in the very first episode she said "NO ONE WILL TAKE MY DRAGONS!!!!" And what happens? Exactly that. She can't do anything right, I'm sorry.
so everybody starts hating danny becaus she didnt had a spectaculair start in this season? thats smurfed up
Don't be silly and think people don't like her because the start of the season has been slow. I've been waiting 3 years for her to do something, but I'm continuously disappointed. And since I'm concurrent with the books, I know what happens with her, so that absolutely plays a part with how I feel about her. Not because this season hasn't been exciting for her. :/ Dany chapters in ADWD are about as entertaining as Catelyn chapters.
I liked her a lot in season one as well. That ending...my god. It was amazing. I was rooting for her so hard. But then she...kind of just wanders around.
I will say, she freed all those slaves. That's not doing NOTHING. If/when she buggers off to Westeros, she's going to have a lot of people who love her and are willing to die for her, even if they're not soldiers. So that's something to consider.
EDIT: I just want to say, after the ending of season 3, I have more positive feelings towards her. I just wish Emilia Clarke had more than one I AM BEING SERIOUS STRONG AND POWERFUL RIGHT NOW voice. There's more than one way to deliver a line in a serious way.

Book Dany is the worst. Season/Book one she is of course fantastic. In Season Two they had to make up some jibber jabber about her dragons being stolen because otherwise bugger all happened. Incidentally in the books, and I was not best pleased they left it out and I'm glad I can mention it now, she actually sees a foretelling of the Red Wedding in that tower. Not that it meant anything to her (or indeed the readers unless they were re-reading!) but I thought it was an awesome detail and they should've put it in. Season Three Dany was pretty decent though.
She's just such a frustrating character. STOP ARSING ABOUT IN GOD KNOWS WHERE AND START KICKING BUTT IN WESTEROS WITH DRAGONS GOD DAMNIT
George seems to enjoy dragging things out for as long as he possibly can, and then drag things out even further. It makes me wonder if he ever wrote for soaps on TV.

I thought it was 8,000 unsullied. Still a large amount but I have no idea how big the opposing armies are, though the dragons could take care of the rest once grown. Though if there's one thing the series has proven, you can never lose a single battle and still lose the war.

8000 unsullied.
4000 more who were training to be unsullied she took.
2000 second sons.
Freed slaves.
There were less than 8000 Lannister men fighting at the Battle for King's Landing.
I agree with everyone else. Season 1 she was one of the best. Now there's just no development and she's boring.
Rantz

I can see the argument that she's boring. I don't think she is, but I understand why people might think that. But I will never understand those who actively dislike her. It doesn't compute for me.
Kinda related: I went searching for the first book at the library the other day and after looking for them everywhere I was told they were in the science fiction section.
I thought that was funny.

It's been a while since I read ADWD but at the end she landed with Drogon in front of a Dothraki army, coupled with the fact that Aegon is poised to take the throne, I think they plan to reunite Daeny (with the Kahl and his army at the end of Dance) and Aegon and then start the war with the White Walkers. Of course knowing George, he could just as easily kill off Daeny and Drogon.
I think Daenys problem is in the book she is only a child, not yet used to rule and unable to split her army up due to lack of trustworthy men and women she can leave behind to work as a governor for the places she has conquered... I really don't she what she could do to solve this. Having Selmy by her side she could effectively rule over Westeros, and would certainly be able to rule to the same degree as Joffery can... once they see the dragons, half the world would follow her, but now she really needs to learn how to rule, being so young, she really needs to stay in Mereen for this season to learn to govern before she can go back to Westeros... I mean there is only so much advice one man can give her, coupled with the fact that she needs to let her dragons grow.

GRRM said throughout interviews that there will be a second dance of the dragons, so I'm thinking her and Aegon will fight. I also think Tyrion basically played him by telling him to go take Westeros now, and possibly that he's playing them against eachother and still working to further his family. Sure he hates Cersei and Jaime but I think Tyrion will show he's a Lannister through and through.

Speculative fiction is the commonly used name and you're right that Horror is a very close relative. I like works that incorporate all three, like Gene Wolf's classic Book of the New Sun series.

If there ever was a dead man walking in ASoIaF it's Aegon/Faegon. He's either going down in a) the capture of Storm's End, b) greyscale from Jon Connington, or c) if Dany indeed shows up for the second Dance. My pick for the Iron Throne is Sansa, it would be a fitting implementation of the "bittersweet endings" GRRM has promised, for the girl who dreamed of being Queen in the first book

I've always understood "speculative fiction" as being simply another, more pretentious term for science fiction alone. I know escapist fiction is often considered derogatory, but includes fantasy and occasionally horror.
Also, props for the Gene Wolfe appreciation.

At a premiere high, the first episode racked in 6.64 million views. Now when you consider the fact that this is the paid television you're dealing with, that's ridiculous. Count in all the pirating, the thing probably had double that.

Way ahead of ya (http://home.eyesonff.com/lounge/155537-song-ice-fire.html#post3393053)
Ok so, I'm guessing Season 4 will go a bit like: Ep 2, The PW. Ep 3-6, Tyrions arrest, Sansa's escape, Ygrittes death, the Hounds "death". Dany doing some stuff with her dragons. Ep 7-8, Littlefinger kills Lysa, Red Viper v The Mountain, Stannis arriving at the wall. Ep 9 Tywin gets it Ep 10 UnCat!
Pretty packed season if it goes like that. I hope it does, because it will be one hell of a season!
I'm interested to see how they do the PW. With all the theories on the internet around who actually poisoned Joff, I hope the show make it clear who the culprits were to bring an end to all the speculation!
I'm guessing the reason Martin released the chapter re Arya was because it was happening in the show and he wanted it out there before it was aired.
I don't think Aegon will win the IT ultimately, or at least I hope not! Personally, I would be really disappointed for somebody who didn't even feature (except for a few mentions) until later in the series to win.
With AFfC and ADwD running simultaneously, I'm guessing these will take up the majority of Seasons 5-6 to give Martin time to get at least one of the books out, but I'm interested to see how the show does it, as these books are so much slower & not a massive amount actually happens.
Edit: DAMMIT. Do I really have to move threads now? :(

Well, most of the book spoilers are still in relation to the show. If you take away the show, there's not all that much new to say about ASoIaF (unless someone actively comes up with topics about it). I suppose as long as it's made clear that show discussion that involves book spoilers goes in that thread, though, it might work.
Omg. I hope so much that season 4 is how you laid it out. If it is, this will be the best season yet.

Yeah, I don't understand why they don't just leave it alone. So far none of their changes have been better. Except Roz. And Talisa/Jeyne Westerling getting stabbed in the uterus.
I really hope they keep the main parts of the story. If this season follows the books it would hands down be the best so far!

I expect they are secretly preparing to separate the books from the show due to Georges reputation for slow releasing of his previous works. Not that I am happy about it but they have to do something.
They know who ends up in the Iron Throne at the end too. Makes me wonder if the TV show will end up spoiling the end of the books if George doesn't get them published by then.
He told them that in case he dies before he completes the series; it'll be a way for fans to still get their conclusion.

It would probably have to take a hiatus. I'm sure they're contractually obligated to keep to secrecy.
They would lose far too much money going on hiatus. Martin told the creators of the show what the ending was in case he cannot get the last book out before they get to it. There is a high possibility that the show will reveal the ending before the book is released and everyone knew this getting into it.

They know who ends up in the Iron Throne at the end too. Makes me wonder if the TV show will end up spoiling the end of the books if George doesn't get them published by then.
I kind of hope they do finish before Martin has a chance to release the final book. Mostly because I think the backlash from the internet would be absolutely delicious.
Haha, yeah I was thinking that too. The internet's devotion to this series is mind-boggling.

Previous deviations haven't been cringe-worthy! Previous deviations have been awesome! Yeah, you cringe at Ros's murder, but it was fantastic. And all the Tywin/Arya scenes were lovely. The Theon torture was cringe-worthy, though they weren't really a deviation so much as an addition.

Unfortunately, it seems like it's a lock at this point. When the first season ended and they announced A Dance With Dragons coming out that summer, a lot of people thought he was taking his output more seriously. His editor even said he would be back to "a book every 2 years" schedule now that he took care of the Feast/Dance arc. But now it's looking more like the 5+ year trend is continuing. Personally, I think the backtracking on where to take the story after Storm broke it and I would not be surprised if he never finishes the books.
Martin suggested they could do an interim prequel series or a mid season hiatus but I'm not sure how realistic that is:

I preferred the Robb's wife line they conjured up for the show vs. the one in the book. But I'm also only just beginning the fourth book, so I don't know if it extends any further or has any other purposes not yet revealed.

I don't think anyone has mentioned the rather humorous scene with Brienne and her dress.
The opening episode was pretty good, but it's clear that it's primary aim was to set the scene and remind us all of last season. Which leads me to a small question: where did we leave Stannis last season? I'm having difficulty remembering his storyline from last season. I could go over it on-line, but I can't be bothered.
He got a message from the Wall saying to come and bring his army because the Whitewalkers were coming.

The book is going to cover events in book four and book five simultaneously to follow the series' internal chronology rather than the order events are revealed, so you've really got a lot of reading to catch up on if you want to stay ahead of the series (although I guess you can read the beginnings of both books simultaneously). It was always established that the end of book three would only take up part of season four, though.
I thought all of season four was just going to follow the second half of book three?
The Man

Nope, there's not enough of book three left for them to spread the whole thing out for season four. They did about two-thirds of book three in season three.

Additionally, I've been watching season one again and I've realized just how much I enjoy Varys' character. He truly is the only impartial party whose concern lies for the realm. Also, I can't think of another time he has broken his cool and raised his voice aside from when he is shouting at Ned in the dungeon to also consider the realm in his dealings. I like him quite a bit.

Book readers have to think about how different Potter films are from their respective books, and then realize that the show can't do EVERY little touch that is in the books. Otherwise we'd have 5 episodes of just traveling and eating food. Doubtful anybody would be a fan of the show then, eh? You just have to respect the little things that the show DOES include from the books.

indeed, he poured joffrey the whine, but he didnt put the wine in the bottle.
Tyrion would would be way more clever then that.
naturally Cersei think its him.. even if she didnt think so she still would accuse him since she has been looking for a reason to get rid of him for seasons!
on the sidenote what ive always wondered is: why did Tywin name the imp after himself? (more or les, or his father perhaps) and not jaime?
would make alot more sense to me if Tyrion was named Jaime, and Jaime Tyrion
naturally Cersei think its him.. even if she didnt think so she still would accuse him since she has been looking for a reason to get rid of him for seasons!
Pretty much. Cersei was just handed an excuse to put Tyrion's head on a pike.

I do know who done it, but even so it's pretty obvious Tyrion wasn't responsible. He didn't have the chance and he's far too clever to do it in public in front of everyone with the murder weapon in his hand. He would also know that doing it that way might throw some people off for that exact reason - but some people either wouldn't care (like Cersei) or would be smart enough to see through the double-bluff (like Tywin).

My boss, the senior VP, specifically instructed me to pair one person with a Lady Gaga in the Kermit the Frog dress photo, so I guess we're going balls out for this.
For one round of awards, there are three ladies up, none of which provided me any photos. I deemed them Cersei Lannister, Margaery Tyrell, and Danaerys Targaryen. This is correct he actually sees Cersei again for the first time in Baelor's Sept, like, weeping over Joffrey's dead body and then they bang on the church floor.

Ok, after watching all the theories and rewatching the wedding for a 4th time, I have come up with some very subtle hints that Lady Olenna shares with Tywin alluding to the plot she is hatching about Jofferys assassination.
"Your heart felt thank you is its own reward, I would imagine I'll be hearing it again before long."
Do you think she could be alluding to the fact that he should be thankful for removing a costly mistake that is Joffery from the throne?
Wars are expencive, the iron bank will have its due how they love to remind to everyone, almost as much as you lannisters with your debts.
Could she mean this as "You took Sansa and my Grandson, I'm going to takes yours as payment."
It's very subtle, but it's pure genius.

Yeah, Olenna is my guess (have not read the book). It would seem unlikely that she would sabotage the wedding she paid for but that's the genius of it. She sees Joffrey as a monster and figures with him dead they can just marry Margery to King Trommen. He's underage too so that would make Margery the Queen Regent. Olenna would make a pretty great Hand actually. She is one of the best characters of the whole series.
My other theory is Sansa since she has the longest list of motives of anyone. Not sure she has the cunning or the means, though.

I hope to see Jack Gleeson's acting future in some sweet, innocent, goodly-hearted gentleman role to mindsmurf the trout out of the masses.
This episode was all sorts of disturbing to me. I couldn't settle after witnessing the beginning with Ramsay. The hunt at the beginning especially, which I was a little confused at first - I didn't realize it was Ramsay and his wenches at first. And then I saw Theon running and I thought they were after him. I saw the girl running and I thought she was laughing or something while she ran, and then it became apparent that she was sobbing and I was so confused by it, but at that point it didn't matter because it was clear they were after her atleast, if not Theon as well. And then witnessing his interactions with Theon and just how utterly shattered Theon has become. He's a shadow of his old self, past the point of being broken. I haven't been fond of or cared about Theon at all up until this point, but it really put a knife in my heart. I suppose that's some good storytelling, though.
Hot damn Bran is getting bigger! Good lord, he'll be fully grown before the show is over.
Ehhhhh I'm not loving this manufactured tale with her. I loved the book because what's to come with the trial and Tywin was so goddamn shocking because it seemed like she loved him this whole time. I don't know why the show would force a reason into it, if they choose to follow the book with the rest of her behaviors. It was a damn good mindsmurf for me, and they should have let it be and let her betray him at court and after instead.
The other part of the episode that smurfing disturbed me was Joffrey's face as he was dying. That was smurfing mortifying. Between that, the little people humiliation, and the Ramsay bits, this episode has my stomach in an uncomfortable knot.
I am finding amusement in the theories flying around in this thread about who the culprit is. :hyper:
Pretty good episode, imo. Better than the premiere, that's for damn sure. And:
I'm building a powerpoint presentation for an awards ceremony tomorrow, and each of our employees were instructed to send in a photo. I was instructed to choose photos for those people who did not send in photos, and explictly instructed to use outlandish, funny photos of famous people.
I am rather proud of myself and I hope some people "get it" :jess: (I am not sure how many of them watch Game of Thrones, but there ought to atleast be a few in over a hundred attendees).
The crowd went wild, and someone hollered out asking where the dragons were. Totally satisfying.

I'm going to have to agree on the points your brought up. I felt bad for Theon while watching this episode, and Joffrey's death scene disturbed me a bit. Unfortunately, I think I've read that Jack Gleeson is done with acting after Game of Thrones. He wants to move on to other things. It's kind of a shame just because you can tell he has some serious acting skills.
I do kind of feel for Joffrey after thinking about him a bit since his death. Part of the problem is that he was simply way too young to be king. He's always kind of been a little shit from what I remember of the show and the little I've read in the books, but I've worked with a lot of kids that are the same age he's supposed to be who would probably be pretty similar if they were suddenly made a king in that kind of world. This is never more clear at the childish bullying he was doing to Tyrion just before his death. He was a spoiled, stuck up brat who felt invincible, like a lot of teenagers are. With this in mind, I do feel bad for him in a lot of ways, and his death wasn't something I really rejoiced over despite the terrible things he had done. I also kind of ... admire is probably the wrong word, but I found him interesting. He was a terrible human being, but he was pretty fearless even with regards to his mother and Tywin. He did what he wanted while the rest of the family kind of tiptoes around each other.

While Joffrey's death was already pretty mortifying, I kind of wish GRRM (who wrote the episode) went the extra mile of having him claw at his throat.
Also, even though he's a little trout that a lot of us wished death upon from the beginning, I found kind of unsettling, in the books, the fact that he was still just a kid... 13 y.o. or something. That and the "deaths" of Bran and Rickon in S2/ACOK were pretty horrifying.
By the way, here is /r/ASOIAF's Book-to-TV chart for S04E02 (http://www.reddit.com/r/asoiaf/comments/231pir/spoilers_adwd_a_booktotv_chart_for_events_from/). Possible spoilers through ADWD.
Going into season four with the trailers I thought Sansa was going to be the one to poison Joffrey, but her character doesn't seem to have experienced enough growth yet to get to that point. I wasn't expecting a mystery to come out of it either. I saw Joffrey choking and Sansa staring with that half sad, half angry look in my mind.
I'm leaning towards Olenna too simply because of her exchange with Sansa before the death. Joffrey's death was pretty brutal given how young the character was.

Yeah, the beauty of that scene in the book was that, in that moment, he was just a little boy and she was just a mother holding her dying son. I'm not sure they were able to really convey that as well as I would've liked in the show.

One child dies hours after marrying Margaery, so we want to marry another to her? If I were Cersei, I wouldn't go for it. Then again, the Tyrells are there and there were all these preparations to bring the houses together, so maybe Tywin will push for it anyway, I don't know.

I felt so many emotions whilst watching episode 2. Whilst I hated Joffrey, I will miss having him around to hate. Excellent acting from Jack Gleeson from the beginning to the end of his time on GoT. It's a shame he's giving up his acting career, but I figure he would be typecast as a bad guy for all eternity.
I watched the episode with people who haven't read the books and none of them picked up on the clues on the killers identity.
I'm really looking forward to the next episode and the aftermath. :excited:
I'm guessing Shae didn't leave on the ship. When Tyrion was grilling Bronn, he did not confirm that he actually watched the ship leave - infact, he appeared to deflect the question. So he got her on the boat, but didn't actually see the boat leave...Or didn't get her on the boat at all - after all, he's a sellsword and Cersei and Tywin both have gold, too. And Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned. Perhaps we could have the same ending for her after all?

Not only that, Tywin leaned to Cersei and said she wanted Shae brought to his chambers. Obvious foreshadowing for folks who have read the books.
I doubt they'll be marrying anyone to anyone until they find out who's responsible for King Joffrey's death. At least, I would think. I know Cersei already pointed the finger at Tyrion and there's a trial coming but I like to think Tywin is much too smart to rule out the possibility that someone else was responsible for this. Especially considering the list of people who'd want Joffrey dead could fill up the sky, though the list of people who had the means to poison him at the time not so much. I'd use the trial as a front to make the real murderer think I'm off their trail.
Or maybe I'm giving Tywin too much credit because he's one of my favorite characters.
Except that pretty much everyone wants Tyrion dead, and here's the easy way to do it.

smurf that. The Targaryens lost all claim when Robert smashed their empire into oblivion. Tommen and Myrcella shouldn't have a claim either, since they are the spawn of incest, as was Joffrey, so obviously Stannis is the heir apparent. But when does logic play into things? It did with Eddard, and look how that went for him. Then again all of which I speak of was covered two seasons ago, so it's all in the past. Just like the Targaryen nonsense. It happened over 10 years ago folks. The Targaryens, the few that are alive (Dany, Aemon) need to get over it. Thankfully Aemon has, and Dany can't control a smurfing free city. So. Yeah. She can be Queen of Slaves in Meereen. Enjoy your dynasty, "your grace".

Hate Stannis all you want, but he's the only King-contender that has accomplished anything. Everybody else that is in contention is fiddling their thumbs, and hoping that the throne falls into their laps. It doesn't work that way. It isn't a contest. You have to get off your lazy arse and kill some :bou::bou::bou::bou:s. Stannis' biggest redeemable quality, to me, is that he takes the threat of the Others [White Walkers] seriously, unlike ANYBODY else.
