Congrats to Jiro for being knighted. Ser Jiro you shall be called now.

He'll bring the thunder from down under. Unfortunately I don't think he'll be dancing in his undies for me though like the actual thunder from down under guys :( I guess I could always ask....

Dancing in my underwear may happen Freya. May happen. With a bit of alcohol and a camera, I shall do this. Whether or not it's allowed to be posted is another thing.

Oh, sorry. When referring to wars, 'the war' usually refers to 'World War II' when you use it outside of America, hence my confusion.

EDIT: In response to Bunny: The land that the US covers was last conquered in the 1600/1700's, I would imagine, around the time that the Europeans colonised it. If you mean the country/nation, then The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland has also never been conquered. Not that I care either way, as I'm a New Zealander. :p

Freya

Actually under the context it was used in, it was perfectly alright to be referenced as "the war". Seeing as it directly involved The U.S. and Britain and that was what they were talking about. Had something like "that's why we had to come in to save you in the war" been said, in that context "the war" would refer to WWII. Context, it's great when trying to get your meaning across.

:monster: The more you know!

stuff above this post
It might be 'perfectly alright' for someone who is brought up with the American Revolution as compulsory reading, but for me, I had no idea what Bunny was talking about. :p

As I said, outside of America, "the war" refers to World War II. I was not aware that in America, or possibly Britain (although I doubt it), "the war" would refer to anything different, regardless of context.

EDIT: Unless it was a Vietnam war vet talking in a stereotypical way about "the war". Although they'd probably refer to it as "'nam" rather than "the war".

Freya
04-18-2011, 05:42 PM
'The war' can be referenced to anything. As in the current war or any. "The war has caused a lot of deaths" Could mean a lot of different wars. The Iraqi, Afghan, Vietnam, Desert storm, WWII, etc etc. Saying it's associated with one is just silly. Even if the fact we're in the U.S., that's just a silly way to look at it. Maybe we were learnededed betters. As I said BoBbles, it's context. That you missed hehe.

The land, yes, but the country itself is an entirely different matter. It doesn't take much to walk into a relatively empty space that isn't owned by anyone and say "I own this now. This is mine."

Warning, long post time. :p

Lekana's right if you're talking about conquering in 1814. Capturing and burning, yes. From what I understand, though, neither the Canadian/British nor the Americans gained any ground on the 1812 war. I only know about that one because of EoFFers. I think it was Bleys, actually, who taught me about it... might be wrong, mind you.

'The war' can be referenced to anything. As in the current war or any. "The war has caused a lot of deaths" Could mean a lot of different wars. I'm fully aware it can mean anything, the only point I made regarding the whole "the war" thing is that outside of America - at least in the countries I've lived in - if you aren't already talking about a war then people tend to assume you're talking about World War II. I wasn't saying Bunny was wrong, I wasn't saying I was right. I was saying I was confused, and that was why. It's all good! :D Hope that makes more sense to you.

The land, yes, but the country itself is an entirely different matter. It doesn't take much to walk into a relatively empty space that isn't owned by anyone and say "I own this now. This is mine."
It was owned on some level by the native people, really, but I do get your point all the same and agree.

I do not understand the hangup. I do not understand how the context could be confused at all. I think you're just trying to save yourself right now. You can be honest, it's okay. People are wrong sometimes.
Check my reply to Lekana, I'm thinking you guys are misunderstanding. As for not understanding how the context could be confused, I imagine that Americans consider the Revolutionary War a very important thing. I never learned about the details until I read upon it today, as it was never taught in our schools and the big American wars we watched movies about in my life were generally the American civil war and World War II. It's just not as big a thing overseas (or at least in NZ), I guess, as it is in America. Which makes sense. I hope you can understand how the context was confused now.

Ummmm. The Norman's?
Ooh, good call. I probably should have remembered that given that it was part of my Life in the UK test. >_>; But then, it wasn't the UK, it was England. Technicality? :p

In Japan, it typically means the Boshin war.
The more I know. :) I guess NZ hasn't really had any major war surrounding us, so we just go with the 'world' ones. We're newbies to this kind of thing. :p Hopefully it will remain that way.

technically. Anyway 'we' helped in either case.

Helped? There was no 'we' and 'they' in those days. Confederation didn't come about until 1867, and even then foreign policy remained in British hands, which is why we were automatically at war when the King declared against the Kaiser--in essence, we were still considered to be part of Britain. The Statute of Westminster notwithstanding, Canadian citizenship didn't exist until 1947--Canadian residents held British citizenship, and we didn't fully shed our Britishness until 1982 when we got our own Constitution. Up until then, Canadians did not require a passport to travel to the UK. (source (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canadian_nationality_law))

You do know that the war of independence was basically British Vs British right? I mean, most the revolters were Brits who didn't want to pay taxes to the King anymore. It's crazy talk to even attempt to suggest this was Americans Vs British. Once the British Army had chased away all the Frenchmen they had no use of the crown & wanted that big land to themselves to run slaves over.

I have no beef with anyone.

Psy: Wait, it still counts if you know you're being trolled?
Yes. :p
Well geez, if that's the case, how do I give people thrills around here?

Wait, don't answer that.

Honestly BoB, right now you are the internet equivalent of someone's sad old dad singing and dancing to Poker Face while wearing a Family Guy shirt.

Don't make me bruise you again. I hate Lady Gaga with a passion. I do have a Family Guy t-shirt though. Danielle got it for me recently. It's... okay. It's got him fighting a chicken and I don't think I've seen the episode.

Why did Jiro's thread turn into people bitching about wars?

Bunny

Because everyone who matters (and some who don't) already congratulated him on being a CK. Next topic.

It wasn't about wars, it was about the defending of honour and all that is true.

This thread's topic will remain arguing about :bou::bou::bou::bou:.

EDIT: It's ok, the wonder boy will catch these things. He's smarts! GO TEAM JIRO!

whut? To be fair, in Aus 'the war' would typically be referring to WWI. That's when we kind of threw our bodies at Gallipoli :(

Yeah, us Antipodeans were cannon fodder so the British army could be saved for safer missions. :(

But we did a damn fine job, BoB. Mother England owes us a great debt for that :bou::bou::bou::bou: we pulled.

Loony BoB

Continent for Australia, and they were indeed shipped there - or at least, some of them were. People went to NZ of their own accord, lured by the promise of a new paradise that had been found down that way. When they arrived, they faced hostile (sometimes cannibal) tribes and lived in crappy makeshift buildings on muddy ground. Hello, Auckland! Of course, time changes everything and now it's probably a lot closer to the paradise they were promised, but going by the letters they wrote to their families in the UK which we had to study at school, they probably won't take much consolation out of that.

Dunno how the Aussies fared - the Aboriginals were pretty different to the Maori.

There was a bit of hostility from certain tribes here and there as far as I'm aware. Not everybody liked the weird white men with their strange skin.

Australia as a whole seemed like a :bou::bou::bou::bou: place to set up shop though.

Not as :bou::bou::bou::bou:ty as this place though:

We Canadians think of Vimy Ridge the same way, but when we say "the war," we mean WWII.

The land, yes, but the country itself is an entirely different matter. It doesn't take much to walk into a relatively empty space that isn't owned by anyone and say "I own this now. This is mine."
It was owned on some level by the native people, really, but I do get your point all the same and agree.

North America could in no way have been declared terra nullius, and although Australia had been, it's a hotly controversial subject. The land was owned by someone, and to some degree (especially in certain areas) it was conquered.

Personally I hate people who troll or laugh at someone for being trolled. I'm with Bob, I enjoy arguing and being passionate about something :colbert:

Actually I haven't been trolling this thread at all. Oops. There's no one worth trolling here though; no one has displayed enough ignorance to merit it.
